00:10Inside recording studios across Kampala, artificial intelligence is becoming part of the creative process.
00:17From generating musical ideas to mixing and mastering tracks, AI-powered software is changing the way music is made.
00:24Imagine something as simple as a slight melody, you know, I can prompt and tell AI to create something based
00:39off that melody.
00:40And within a minute or two, you know, I get to have a full blown up song.
00:47So, it's really an incredible tool that has become part of my work and each day it continues to amaze
01:01me the things that it does.
01:06But while AI is making production easier...
01:09To some of us, I can easily identify that, ah, that's an AI song, you know.
01:15There's something that you hear that's so fine and so, you know, it's so crystal clear, perfect vocals, you know.
01:28So, yeah, so I feel like at the moment it's still missing that soul, that, you know.
01:36And that's why when you decide to use it, I think it should just help you develop what you have.
01:47Build on what you have, but not 100%, you know, go all out with it, so that, you know, we
01:58don't lose that human touch, that human element in it.
02:17If AI is misused and you feel your content is being misused, you have the moral right.
02:24If you feel your content is being sold out for money, you have the economic right.
02:31So, you have the right to go to court.
02:34And we've seen it in countries like America, where producers have gone ahead to sue.
02:42Those recorder labels, they've gone ahead to sue, so cases are there, and it is also coming to Uganda.
02:49AI is evolving faster than the laws that are designed to protect creative work.
02:55They say updating copyright rules will be key to addressing issues around ownership, consent, and AI-generated content.
03:04We cannot say we are going to do our work with AI.
03:08It is easier to stay.
03:10We just need to enact laws that are going to address the gray areas and also help the authors to
03:20sell their songs
03:21and to have better versions of their songs.
03:25Back in the studio, the music keeps playing.
03:29For artists like Benon Mogumbia, AI is opening another creative tool.
03:34But the stories, emotions, and identity behind the music still come from people.
