00:04Hi, I'm Rhianne from NME and I am backstage at Mad Cool with TTSSFU. How are you doing?
00:10Oh, I'm good. A little bit tired but good.
00:13Yeah, we'll push through. It'll be fine. This is your first Mad Cool?
00:19Yeah, I've been trying to figure out who I know has played this festival. I'm not
00:24sure if The Strokes have played it. I think possibly. They've played everything so surely.
00:29I feel like they have. I feel like I've watched videos of The Strokes play Mad Cool. That's what I
00:33was trying to figure out.
00:34I saw Lorde online play it yesterday and I was like, I wish I was playing that day.
00:40Now you are. What have you heard about the festival before you got here?
00:45Just that it's really, I've had lots of DMs of people saying it's really good and it's a nice festival.
00:50So yeah, it's warm. So yeah, it's good.
00:55Who are you looking forward to catching today?
00:56We're David Byrne. I'm really hoping I somehow bump into him, but who knows. And maybe Nick Cave and Pulp.
01:08Yeah. What would you say to David Byrne if you did bump into him?
01:12Probably that I got in a lot of trouble. There was like a Byrne's cover night.
01:19Oh yeah, yeah. And I went on stage and smoked a cigarette and it really pissed off everyone and they
01:25nearly got fined.
01:27Oh, yeah.
01:28I'd probably say that.
01:31But they didn't get fined. It was okay.
01:33Yeah. Do you think he would maybe tell you off again for that?
01:36Yeah.
01:37I don't think he'd find it funny.
01:41Okay. Well, I hope you get to do this.
01:43Yeah, maybe. Fingers crossed.
01:45What can we expect from your set today?
01:47A lot of wailing.
01:49Mm-hmm.
01:49Yeah. I'm gonna try and sing properly, but I had like tonsillitis of a week and it like low-key
01:55messed up my throat.
01:56So if it sounds terrible, that's why and not because of me.
01:58But yeah, and like shorts.
02:03The lads are gonna wear shorts today. Normally they wear suits, but they're gonna wear shorts.
02:07Can't make them wear suits in this weather.
02:09Yeah, it would be actually criminal, but yeah.
02:12How would you describe a typical TTSSFU show?
02:17Uh, chaotic normally. I feel like it's more chaotic from my point of view.
02:23But like when I watch back the videos, it's like way more still.
02:28And I think it's cause like adrenaline or something.
02:31But um, yeah, I mean fun. Mostly fun, yeah.
02:34Why is it chaotic from your view, would you say?
02:37I always see people doing strange things in the crowd.
02:40Like I've seen a lot of really strange make-out sessions in the crowd.
02:45And like old people pushing each other.
02:48I've seen a lot of that.
02:49But yeah, it's fun.
02:51Sounds great.
02:52Yeah.
02:52Have some more of that tonight then.
02:53I hope so.
02:54Yeah.
02:55You've been working on some new music lately, I've heard.
02:58What have you been, what can you tell us about what you've been writing?
03:00How's it all going so far?
03:02Uh, it's good.
03:03I would say it's a lot more synth-y.
03:07And I'd just say I'm trying to really connect what I do next to what I'm actually passionate about with
03:14me.
03:15Not that like the past hasn't, but just kind of go back to my roots of like what really inspired
03:20me.
03:21And I went a little bit more guitar, like based on the last EP.
03:26So I think now I'm going back to like kind of that dream pop range of music.
03:33Yeah.
03:33What was the kind of first thing that inspired you when you were starting out?
03:37Probably Robin.
03:39Yeah.
03:39Like really love her new album.
03:42Um, I just think it's incredible.
03:44And Caroline Polachek, I just love all of that stuff.
03:47And just like chorus effect in general.
03:51I think it's incredible.
03:52And a lot of films, like I can't actually remember the film creator's name.
03:59But they made I Saw the TV Glow.
04:01Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:03That film like blew my mind.
04:05So good.
04:05Yeah, a lot of like visual stuff on that kind of gritty, like pop, like 80s kind of sound.
04:13Yeah.
04:14Is the plan for this music to be an EP or an album maybe?
04:18Or is it too soon to say?
04:19I don't know.
04:20I don't know what I can say about it.
04:22But the bigger one.
04:25Oh, exciting.
04:27I did hear that you wrote a synth album after the blown EP.
04:31And that's where Upstairs came from.
04:33Yeah.
04:34Are there plans for the other songs to be released or are they kind of...
04:36A track that's going to be on the album.
04:38Okay.
04:38I've just exposed it.
04:39Yeah.
04:40But it's from that and there's a lot of really special stuff that's on that.
04:45And I keep pinching things from it and effects.
04:48And it was kind of just an experiment and I absolutely loved it.
04:52But it's just like flawed in many ways.
04:55But I would say that it sort of like inspired me to do what I'm going to do next.
05:00Because I was like, oh, like I can do that.
05:02But yeah, I'm going to be working with Chris Ryan again.
05:07And he like totally gets like my vision and stuff.
05:12So working with him to do like co-production and stuff just like really builds things like into the bigger
05:18picture.
05:18And like, yeah, he's just an awesome guy who I can be like super open with and give him the
05:23ideas.
05:23So yeah, it's awesome.
05:26Before you wrote Blown, I think you said that you had like the most overwhelming pressure that you'd ever felt
05:32when it came to writing music.
05:33Yeah, yeah.
05:33Is that something that you've been able to shake off this time around?
05:36It's took a while.
05:38I'd say like that's the whole reason it's took me so much time to like get back to it.
05:43Yeah.
05:44And like figure out what I actually want to do.
05:47Because it was just like sort of seeing other bands and touring with other bands,
05:51which I'd like never done as myself.
05:55I was like sort of doubting my own music and like if it was exciting enough and stuff like that.
06:02And then I've kind of gone back to like thinking, oh, yeah, it is.
06:04Yeah, yeah.
06:06So it doesn't need to be like too like rock and roll.
06:09No, you can just do you.
06:11Yeah.
06:13What can we expect from you for the rest of this year?
06:15You got more tours and gigs and more gigs, music.
06:18Doing a tour with Blond Shell.
06:20That'll be amazing.
06:21I'm really excited.
06:23We spoke a little bit on DMs and she seems really nice.
06:26Yeah.
06:27Fingers crushing.
06:29But yeah, it's going to be fun.
06:33And maybe another tour, I think.
06:36I don't know.
06:37Yeah.
06:37Oh, and festivals.
06:38Yes.
06:39I can't pronounce.
06:40I think it's Yipsy Garage or something.
06:41Oh, I know which.
06:42I don't know how to say that either.
06:44I don't know how to pronounce.
06:44Yeah.
06:45Yeah.
06:45But people can see you there.
06:47Yeah.
06:48Amazing.
06:49Well, thank you so much, Tasman.
06:50Awesome.
06:50Enjoy my call.
06:51You.
