Residents evacuated as fire of 'exceptional scale' rages in Fontainebleau forest south of Paris

The fire, which officials described as "very virulent" and of "exceptional scale", began Sunday afternoon in the sprawling Fontainebleau forest about 60 kilometres south-east of the French capital.

00:01Firefighters were rushing to contain a fire that erupted in the sprawling Fontainebleau
00:06forest just south of Paris on Sunday. Early on Monday, officials partially closed the A6 highway,
00:13France's main north-south artery, after firefighting aircraft had been forced to
00:17suspend their operations with nightfall. The fire, which started on Sunday afternoon,
00:23has already burned 800 hectares and is still spreading. Around 15 homes had been evacuated
00:28in the nearby village of Vaudoué, and firefighters were defending several other towns in the area.
01:09Two firefighting planes alongside 400 firefighters were deployed to contain the flames, which erupted
01:15just ahead of the 14th July national holiday and on the first major weekend for departures for the
01:20summer holiday season.
