Arctic seabed mission documents fragile marine life threatened by Norway's deep-sea mining plans

A month-long Arctic expedition has revealed deep-sea ecosystems in an area being considered for mining.

00:19Very many of the species are long-lived and don't produce very many offsprings so if something
00:29happens they have a very little restitution availability. Another reason why deep sea ecosystems
00:39are considered vulnerable is that they need cold water. Most of the deep water is cold water
00:46and climate change is changing that.
00:57Very many of the species in the deep sea are small invertebrate species so not having an internal
01:07skeleton and they very often have an outside skeleton what we call an external skeleton
01:14that is built from calcium somehow and this is very difficult for them if the water becomes more
01:22acidic as happens with ocean acidification which is a second part of climate change as well so
01:30the deep sea even though it's far away from us is already now suffering a lot of problems.
