00:17Thank you very much.
00:54Thank you very much.
01:00Thank you very much.
01:00I don't know the tension on Celebrity Countdown.
01:04Today, we've got two TV presenters, both super shoppers.
01:08Going head to head, so who will prove to be top of the range, who will prove to be perhaps
01:13a budget option?
01:15We've got the wonderful Sabrina Grant.
01:22Are you a Countdown fan? Do you watch the show?
01:25I remember it as a child.
01:27I remember it being on and just having no idea what was going on,
01:30but loving the sound of the clock.
01:33OK. Because it's quite a good tune.
01:36Is it true that sometimes they said,
01:40Sabrina, leave the classroom?
01:42Yeah. I was one of those cheeky ones
01:45that got kicked out of maths and English.
01:50But I promise, Nick, I'll be on my best behaviour here.
01:52You're going to have a lot of fun and we love having you here.
01:55Let's have a big round of applause for your competitor here,
01:58the wonderful Anna Richardson.
02:00Anna.
02:01I'm calling myself.
02:05All right. Same question to you, Anna.
02:07Yes.
02:08You have watched Countdown, haven't you?
02:10Of course I have, Nick.
02:11I mean, you know, I'm nearly 50 years old.
02:12It's been going for about that long,
02:14so I've been watching it from year dot.
02:16Excellent.
02:16Numbers or letters?
02:17What do you reckon?
02:17I am a letters person.
02:20I genuinely do think that I have maths dyslexia
02:24and I've failed my maths O level seven times.
02:27So this should be an interesting challenge.
02:30All right.
02:31Now, over in Dictionary Corner, of course, we've got Susie Dent,
02:34the wonderful, the wonderful Susie,
02:36joined today by that fantastic comedian, actor and poet,
02:39one of our favourite guests on the other Countdown.
02:42It's Rufus Hound.
02:43Welcome, Rufus.
02:47Wow.
02:49This is all very interesting.
02:51Yes, isn't it?
02:52I mean, Anna said she's numerically dyslexic
02:54and that she'd failed her maths O level seven times,
02:56but it was actually 11, which only goes to prove her points.
03:01Brilliant stuff.
03:02And, of course, Rachel's over there on the board.
03:07Rachel, I think you're going to make things a little bit easier.
03:11Yes, because these are Celebrity Countdown specials,
03:14we're being a little bit more generous than we usually are.
03:17So, whereas, normally, if one contestant got seven
03:19and the other one got eight, only the winning contestant would get the points,
03:22today, everyone gets points irrespective of what the other contestant has done.
03:26So, if someone gets the numbers game spot on,
03:28which I'm expecting from both of you, you get ten points,
03:31but if someone also got one away, two away,
03:33you'd still get the seven points as if the other one didn't do anything.
03:36So, extra points up for grabs
03:38because we're all here to have a good time.
03:40Absolutely.
03:40I...I object.
03:43What's wrong?
03:44I have been watching this game for 30 years, man and boy,
03:48and now we're making it easier...
03:50Not on my watch, right?
03:52I've been running backwards and forwards with Tippex on those screens
03:55to adjust the scores.
03:57Thanks, Rufus, but now, time to get down to business.
04:00It's a letters game for you, Sabrina.
04:02Right.
04:03I'll have a consonant, please.
04:05Thank you, Sabrina.
04:06We'll start with...
04:07G.
04:08And another...
04:09I can't believe I'm saying this.
04:11R.
04:11I already feel clever.
04:12You're here.
04:13And another, please.
04:15S.
04:15You've got a strategy, Grant, haven't you?
04:17Vowel.
04:18O.
04:19I might.
04:20I don't know.
04:21And another, please.
04:23E.
04:25Consonant.
04:26And you're doing brilliantly so far.
04:28Yeah.
04:29Vowel.
04:30A.
04:32Consonant.
04:34D.
04:36And I think...
04:37A consonant.
04:39Yeah.
04:40A final.
04:40C.
04:41And here's the countdown clock.
04:46TheFanGuyTour.
04:46There.
05:13TheFanGuyTour.
05:15Sabrina? Five.
05:17Anna? Six.
05:19Uh-huh. Sabrina? Grand.
05:21Ooh! Anna?
05:23I've got reason.
05:30It's a good way to start. Look at that. Five plays six.
05:32Anna on six. And over in the corner, what's cooking?
05:35There is an eight. Decagons. Ten-sided figures.
05:38All right. Well done.
05:42APPLAUSE
05:43So, Anna, on six, Sabrina, five, as we turn to Rachel
05:47to talk about numbers. Rachel.
05:49Well, I've come up with some countdown numbers tips, Nick,
05:52for our lovely contestants here today.
05:54And I did ask the girls, before we came out here,
05:57how confident they are at the numbers game,
05:59and they said not particularly.
06:01So I'm going to give some tips now to help a little bit.
06:04So I'm going to pick everyone's favourite selection,
06:07or most people's favourite selection, which is one from the top,
06:09and five little ones.
06:12And...
06:13Well, this round we have...
06:14You don't have to play, don't worry.
06:15OK.
06:16We have three, four, five, six, one, and 75.
06:22And the target... 852.
06:25So what most contestants may try to do here
06:29is get as close to the 852 as possible.
06:32As close to the 852 using the 75 as possible
06:34would be 11 times 75, which is 825.
06:38So they might say 6 plus 5 equals 11.
06:4211 times 75 is 825.
06:46And then they would be left with a 1, 4, and 3
06:50to try to get 27 higher than what they've got,
06:53and they'd be a little bit stuffed.
06:55So one of the top tips for working out the countdown numbers game
06:59is instead of adding numbers to times by the big number,
07:02if you times numbers together,
07:04it often leaves you with much more options
07:07for what you can do next,
07:08and you can get a lot closer to the target than this way.
07:11So if instead of going from below to get to 852,
07:14you went from above,
07:15and you said that 4 times 3 is 12,
07:19and then 12 times 75 is 900,
07:24at this point you are looking for 48.
07:27So you need to remove 48 from this to get down,
07:31and you still have the numbers 1, 6, and 5.
07:34And if you were to just use 1, 6, and 5 by themselves,
07:38the largest number you can make out of those three
07:40is 1 plus 5 is 6 times 6 is 36.
07:44That still doesn't help you.
07:46But what you can notice is that the 48 that you're trying to find
07:50is actually 12 times 4.
07:53So if you had two 12s,
07:55you could say that 852 equals 900 minus 48,
08:01which equals 12 times 75 minus 12 times 4.
08:06And you can make a 4 with your 5 minus 1.
08:11So if you had two lots of 12,
08:13you could say 12 times 75 minus 12 times 5 minus 1 gives you 852.
08:22So we've got to the point where if we had two 12s,
08:25we could find the solution.
08:26We haven't got two 12s,
08:27and in the Countdown Numbers Game,
08:28obviously, we like to make it a challenge.
08:29You can only use each number once.
08:31So you have to remember something that you did at school.
08:34Everyone remember brackets?
08:35Yes!
08:36Brackets are your best friend in the Countdown Numbers Game.
08:39Because if you take the 12 outside the brackets
08:41and put inside 75 minus 4,
08:46then you can solve this problem without using any of the numbers twice.
08:49And it makes you look like, you know, your 71 times table,
08:52but in actuality, you don't know it from Adam.
08:54Um, I forgot my calculator.
08:56It's under here.
09:02Hold on.
09:03I think you're amazing.
09:05I've learned a whole lot after seven years.
09:08That's amazing.
09:09So back to you, Rachel.
09:10Let's have a numbers game.
09:12So now we're going to have an actual numbers game,
09:14and I've been lucky that I get to pick it for this one.
09:16So there might be some ways that you can use some of those tips when solving this.
09:20That's only a little clue for you.
09:22So I'm going to go for one from the top,
09:24and find more little ones for you.
09:27And don't panic.
09:28Best of luck.
09:28You can do it.
09:29Maths positivity.
09:30OK.
09:31So these numbers, we have 2, 3, 5, 4, 3,
09:38and the large one, 75.
09:41And the target, 632.
09:44632.
09:45For more information,
09:45So we're going to get to...
10:08And now, of course,
10:10the customer is coming.
10:11This 100's about Satsang with Matt McWroy,
10:13which is kinda who's finding the biggest team.
10:13The Answer Is Us.
10:16Now, what do we think? Anna? I've got 632. No! What about Sabrina? I would have done. Go on, what
10:26have you got? 620.
10:29Aww. Anna? Well, in my head, I had 632, but let me tell you where I got to. I'm not
10:38even sure what number I've got. I did 75 times 8, but we haven't gotten 8, have we?
10:44So how do you make an 8? Let's make an 8. Let's do it together. 5 plus 3 equals 8.
10:515 plus 3 equals 8. Times 75 is 600. And then, and there you go.
11:01You would have to make 32 to get to 32, wouldn't you? 8 times... 4 8s! Yes! 4 8s is
11:0832. Oh! And what you've just done is 8 times 75,
11:13and what you want to do is add 8 times 4. So, using some of the tips we may have
11:18just spoken about...
11:19Right. ..can you see a way now to do this without using the 8 twice? Absolutely.
11:26LAUGHTER
11:31If we were to maybe chuck a couple of brackets somewhere and put the 8 outside it...
11:36Can you put anything inside the brackets that might lead us to 632?
11:4275!
11:4375!
11:46Plus...
11:47Plus...
11:47Plus...
11:48Plus...
11:48For Rufus...
11:49For Rufus...
11:50For Rufus...
11:50Four!
11:52How did you know that?
11:53I don't know!
11:54At the end of the show, you'll be after my job, I'm sure.
11:57Well, bad luck on the maths, but you'll get it, you'll get it. Now we've got something else for you.
12:01We've got a conundrum.
12:03So soon!
12:03Now, come on, fingers on buzzers, let's roll the Countdown Conundrum.
12:09MUSIC PLAYS
12:34Oh, no!
12:36Anna!
12:36I think I might have got it wrong, but I got close.
12:39Try.
12:40Prudence.
12:41Let's see whether you're right.
12:43There's nowhere near!
12:46Sabrina, take your time. It's all yours.
12:49There's a lot on the clock.
12:50Do you really want to get this?
12:53WHISTLE BLOWS
12:54Sabrina!
12:55I just wanted to press the buzzer.
12:59Let's roll it and see. Now you're going to be so upset with yourselves.
13:03Oh, I know, I know, I know! What is it?
13:05What is it?
13:06Erm, I think...
13:08Yes.
13:09Purchased! Purchased!
13:11Purchased!
13:12Purchased!
13:12Let's have a look.
13:13There it is!
13:15APPLAUSE
13:18That's made me angry.
13:20That's made me angry.
13:21Well done, Sabrina. But we're not going to give her any points because you don't have time.
13:24Right.
13:24But now we've got a teaser. Sabrina, are you listening? It's Sabrina G.
13:28This is the teaser and the clue.
13:31Sabrina is always on the lookout for these. She's a super shopper.
13:35Sabrina G is always on the lookout for these. She's a super shopper.
13:39And the answer to that is bargains. Bargains, Sabrina.
14:06Oh, that's a great show you're in.
14:08I'm always up to bargain.
14:09What are the best tips, the most surprising tip or trick that you've uncovered?
14:15It's not really about it being the best. I think it's just getting the viewers and myself
14:20to realise that retailers and big manufacturers are sort of manipulating our minds into thinking we're getting good deals.
14:29So it's really about looking deeper into some of the big claims that these companies make.
14:34Sure. And they, I guess, get a little bit embarrassed when you reveal exactly what they're up to.
14:40Yeah, they do. And sometimes we do. I mean, we were on Oxford Street with a massive megaphone
14:46and screaming and shouting at John Lewis for not keeping up to their price comparison, their price match.
14:53Yeah.
14:55But it's fun. It's fun as well.
14:57And you're doing a good service, too.
14:59Exactly. Important. Every penny counts, as you know.
15:02Now, Sabrina, we're going to have a letters game. Down to you.
15:05Me again?
15:06Yep.
15:07I'll have a consonant, please.
15:09Thank you, Sabrina.
15:10S.
15:11And another.
15:13M.
15:15And a vowel.
15:16U.
15:18And another.
15:20I.
15:21A consonant, please.
15:23P.
15:24And another.
15:27X.
15:28No!
15:29I don't want an X!
15:31Erm, another consonant.
15:33R.
15:35Erm, another consonant.
15:38D.
15:38Is that a good move, Rachel?
15:40You need at least another vowel. I'll try and find you an E.
15:42I'll get a vowel.
15:42An E can be used for the next.
15:44For the last one.
15:45L.A.
15:46Sorry.
15:48Stand by.
15:49Bye voy.
16:18And I'll be right back.
16:19I'll be right back.
16:20Sabrina.
16:21I completely panicked.
16:23Mm-hmm.
16:24And got a nine.
16:25No.
16:27Well.
16:28No, sorry, I got nine two-letter words.
16:32What about Anna?
16:33Anna, what have you got?
16:34A six.
16:35A six?
16:36Sabrina, give her something.
16:38I've got nothing, honestly.
16:41Never mind.
16:42Anna, amaze us.
16:44Well, you are going to be stunned by this, if I can tell.
16:47I've got radius.
16:48That's good.
16:49Excellent.
16:51Very good.
16:54What have you got?
16:55Well done, Anna.
16:57Well, that was about as well as we did.
16:59Six was what we had.
17:01We had radium.
17:02Yep.
17:03Which is all same there.
17:04But, I mean, very similar, really.
17:05So, very well done.
17:06Susie?
17:07Praxis is another six.
17:08I don't want to use the X.
17:09But, yeah, six was our very best.
17:10Well done, Anna.
17:11Up to 12 points.
17:1212 plays five.
17:13And it's Anna's letters game.
17:15Anna.
17:16Could I have a consonant, please?
17:18Of course you can, Anna.
17:20C.
17:21And a vowel.
17:23E.
17:24And a consonant.
17:26T.
17:27And a vowel.
17:29O.
17:30Hang on, I need to write this down, don't I?
17:31Yeah, sometimes.
17:32And a consonant, please.
17:35It will stay on the screen.
17:36M.
17:37And a consonant.
17:39R.
17:42And a vowel, please.
17:44I.
17:46And a consonant.
17:49T.
17:49E.
17:51And a vowel, please.
17:52And the last one.
17:54E.
17:54And the clock starts now.
17:57And a vowel.
18:17And a vowel, please.
18:17And a vowel, please.
18:17And a vowel, please.
18:17And a vowel, please.
18:18And a vowel, please.
18:18And a vowel, please.
18:18And a vowel, please.
18:22And a vowel, please.
18:28Anna I've only got five Sabrina a safe five
18:34Anna
18:36This is gonna really annoy me. I've got merit. Mm-hmm. Sabrina
18:42timer
18:43Thank you, and maybe seven
18:49Termite
18:50I don't know I can't remember you it is an e it's two e's yeah
19:01I
19:01Can relax now yeah, we'll let that one sneak through what about Rufus Rufus? What do you reckon?
19:08I had a couple of six is erotic and metric. Yes. Thank you, Anna
19:15There are a couple of sevens mortis
19:18And a courtier which is a cottager as in someone living in a cottage. Yeah, well, yeah, but tell other
19:24people play this game, too
19:26Rachel yeah, I want eight points today obviously with the girls in
19:30Oh, we had meteoric
19:31We had meteoric
19:32Oh
19:33Meteoric, well done
19:35Okay, now
19:40Seventeen plays twelve well done so Sabrina numbers off we go one from the top
19:46Please and then five with the other little ones one from the top and five little you might be like
19:51this one from the top better than the last one
19:53Yeah, we have three
19:56five two
19:58six
19:59Seven and the large one
20:02100 and the target
20:03Six hundred and twenty six two zero
20:37Yes, Sabrina?
20:406, 2, 1.
20:44Anna?
20:46Do you know what? Staggeringly...
20:48Yes?
20:49Staggeringly, Nick.
20:50You got it?
20:51I think I've got 620.
20:52Come on.
20:53Well, let's start with Sabrina.
20:54Sabrina, 621?
20:57Yes.
20:58Erm, 6 times 100.
21:016 times 100, 600.
21:04Erm,
21:063 plus 2.
21:083 plus 2 is 5.
21:105.
21:105 times 5 is 25.
21:12Yep.
21:13Then I just realised I've used a 6.
21:15Can you use it again?
21:16Oh, no.
21:18Unfortunately not.
21:20But 7...
21:21Times 3.
21:22Times the 3.
21:23Don't stop helping her.
21:24It would have been a better option for me.
21:27Yeah.
21:28It would have been a better option for me.
21:28It would have been 621.
21:29It would have been 621.
21:30I think I've got to draw a curtain over this.
21:33And turn to Anna.
21:35Anna, what do you think?
21:36620.
21:37Nick, Nick.
21:37Staggeringly, I've got 620.
21:39Are you ready for this, Rachel?
21:40Because you are going to be amazed by my incredible maths.
21:44So, I've got 100 times 6.
21:47100 times 6 is 600.
21:492 times 5 is 10.
21:53So that's 610.
21:54Yep.
21:55Plus 7 is 617.
21:58Plus 3.
21:59And you've not used any number twice.
22:01No!
22:02Till next time.
22:08Well done.
22:1027 plays 12.
22:12And we hurry to the corner to talk to Rufus.
22:16Rufus, what have you got for us today?
22:18Well, as you know, Nick, I write poems.
22:20Yes.
22:20But I only write them when I'm on countdown.
22:22So, here's a poem about Celebrity Countdown.
22:25Excellent.
22:26To be honest, I can't quite believe it.
22:28To be sat here seems somewhat surreal.
22:31Because this is Celebrity Countdown.
22:33And I'm really not sure what to feel.
22:35Because it seems like some boss at the channel
22:37looked at this late lunchtime quiz
22:39and decided it needed the famous,
22:41that it needed a dose of showbiz.
22:44But why would they think it needs zhuzhing?
22:46It's not like the regular show is anything less than explosive,
22:50as regular viewers all know.
22:51Oh, sure, it looks cosy and friendly
22:53and that everyone here is delightful.
22:56But look in the eyes of the players
22:57and you'll see that they're steely and spiteful.
23:00Oh, Nick'll make small talk with Rachel
23:03while Susie checks words from her tome.
23:06But they just make it look nice for telly.
23:08When you're here, it's like the Thunderdome.
23:10Yeah, sure, you watch on your sofa,
23:13everyone here seems so nice.
23:14But the editors cut out the swearing
23:17and the threats and the blood and the fights.
23:20Last year, the champion of champions
23:22called his final opponent a dum-dum
23:24and got shivved right under that table.
23:26Nearly died just before the conundrum.
23:29Nick takes the fighting with a pinch of salt belly,
23:31looks up when contestants do it.
23:33But then, after those years with Lord Sugar,
23:35I guess he's become immune to it.
23:38Rachel and Susie, conversely,
23:40get stuck in the moment it starts.
23:42Susie is more of a brawler
23:44whilst Rachel is more martial arts.
23:46At the moment, a scrap's in the offing,
23:48all the floor crew pile on as an influx.
23:51Dentth wax her foes with her laptop
23:53and Riley swells felt-tip pen nunchucks.
23:57Nick hits the button, the timer goes off
23:59and until that clock's final tones,
24:01the studio here is a bloodbath.
24:03Less countdown and more Game of Thrones.
24:06The last time I sat in this corner,
24:08the show took four hours to record.
24:10There were nine falls and 16 submissions
24:12and one fella had bought in a sword.
24:14After each frightful fracas abated,
24:16the make-up team masks, cuts and bruises.
24:19The studio manager sweeps up the teeth
24:21and everyone lengthens their fuses.
24:23The game then continues,
24:24but everyone knows it's no case of if but of when.
24:27Some tiny thing will pee someone off
24:29and they'll all kick off fighting again.
24:31So, please, Channel 4, have a rethink.
24:34If you're looking to give the show clout,
24:36don't have celebs playing Countdown.
24:39Just broadcast the stuff you cut out.
24:42Brilliant.
24:43Hey!
24:49Rufus, you're terrific.
24:51I tried.
24:51That's amazing.
24:52Thank you so much.
24:54All right.
24:54Now, time for a teaser.
24:57It's Bog Spats.
24:58And the clue?
24:59Nothing to do with naked attraction,
25:01just large male sacks.
25:04Nothing to do with naked attraction,
25:07just large male sacks?
25:24And the answer to that is post bags.
25:32Oh, yes.
25:33Post bags.
25:34Now, Anna, let's talk about naked attraction.
25:38Let's.
25:39I mean, huge success.
25:42Unusual show.
25:43Yes.
25:44You must have some funny stories.
25:45Whatever happens during filming?
25:47Every time we do the show,
25:50everybody has a fantastic time.
25:53It genuinely is a really inclusive, joyful show to do.
25:57I think that one of the funniest things I encountered was we have a huge makeup team who have to
26:03obviously sort of primp and preen the contestants.
26:06And these days, everybody likes to sort of wax or shave, you know, to make themselves sort of camera ready.
26:12But, of course, once you have shaved yourself, you tend to get little pimples.
26:17So the makeup team have to sit and get very, very close to people's bits and bobs.
26:22And there was one girl who had her concealer out and a makeup brush,
26:26and she was just doing a spot on somebody's nether regions.
26:29And then she turned to him and said,
26:30I've got to use this on Prince William tomorrow.
26:35I don't think he was expecting that.
26:37I hope Prince William didn't realise.
26:39I'm sure he was delighted about that.
26:40Do you know, dating naked, Nick, can work.
26:43You should do it.
26:45He's wearing nothing underneath that desk.
26:49I'm wearing a tutu like I always do.
26:53Thank you very much.
26:55Rufus, 27 plays 12.
26:57Anna in the lead.
26:58And where should we go?
27:00Anna, let's have your letters game now, shall we?
27:02Off we go.
27:03Yes, please.
27:04OK, so, Rachel, please, could I have a consonant?
27:07Of course you can.
27:08Thank you, Anna.
27:09N.
27:10And could I have a vowel, please?
27:12A.
27:14And a consonant?
27:16Y.
27:17And a vowel?
27:19I.
27:20And a consonant?
27:22H.
27:23And a consonant?
27:25D.
27:26Sorry, was that T?
27:27It said D.
27:28Oh, D.
27:29Um, and a vowel, please.
27:33U.
27:35Oh, crikey.
27:36What are you doing, Anna?
27:38Um, oh, I don't know where to go with this.
27:39Even I know.
27:40And a consonant, please.
27:41Check another consonant up.
27:43V.
27:43Oh, wow.
27:44Oh, this is a challenging one.
27:46Oh, I don't know where to go vowel or consonant.
27:47You can have a, a T or an O.
27:50Oh, my goodness.
27:52Tea, please.
27:53Tea.
27:54We have a, a T.
27:55And here's the clock.
27:57Good luck.
27:58Oh, I don't know where to go.
28:14Oh, I don't know where to go.
28:15Oh, I don't know where to go.
28:15Oh, I don't know where to go.
28:15Oh, I don't know where to go.
28:16Oh, I don't know where to go.
28:16Oh, I don't know where to go.
28:17Oh, I don't know where to go.
28:18Oh, I don't know where to go.
28:19Oh, I don't know where to go.
28:20Oh, I don't know where to go.
28:28Anna.
28:29That's a disaster.
28:31Complete disaster?
28:33I've got four. No, you haven't.
28:36Have I not? No.
28:37You've got a six. Have I? Yeah.
28:41Erm...
28:41I think I've got six, Nick.
28:44Yeah.
28:47And...?
28:47I think I've got a four and a six.
28:51Shall we go to Anna first?
28:53I'm going to go for five, actually.
28:54Thank you. Which would be...?
28:56I don't know whether it's in the dictionary.
28:58I'm going to try nudie.
29:01Can you believe it?
29:02Sabrina, what have you got?
29:03I got nudity.
29:05Whee!
29:13Now, what's happening in the corner?
29:16I had to disallow nudie,
29:17cos there's no...
29:18Were you thinking I-E, there's no E?
29:20No, E-Y. There's no E.
29:22Nudie.
29:24Nudie?
29:25Oh, OK. Rufus.
29:27Yeah.
29:29Fives, Vaunt and Daunt,
29:31sixes, nudity,
29:34vanity... Yep.
29:35...and untidy.
29:37Thank you very much.
29:38But I think we should have a round of applause for...
29:41Well done, Sabrina.
29:42There you go.
29:43APPLAUSE
29:45Well done.
29:46All right, 27 to 18.
29:49Anna still in the lead, but...
29:50Now we turn to you, Sabrina.
29:52Letters game.
29:53Consonant, please.
29:54Thank you, Sabrina.
29:55S.
29:57And another one?
29:58T.
29:59And another?
30:01W.
30:03And a vowel, please.
30:05O.
30:06And another vowel?
30:08A.
30:09And a consonant?
30:12S.
30:13And a consonant?
30:16N.
30:20And another consonant?
30:23F.
30:25And a vowel, please.
30:27And a last one.
30:28I think I have to have a vowel, right?
30:29You have to have a vowel.
30:29You have to have an I.
30:30And it's Countdown.
30:34And whatever you want.
30:42No one?
30:42That's pretty much the time?
30:44No...
30:49Any...
30:55Right now?
30:56Right now?
30:57Right now?
30:57Well done.
30:58Well done...
30:59To you very much.
31:00Right now?
31:01Exactly.
31:01Do not enjoy the noisy ones.
31:02No.
31:03Sabrina?
31:04Four. I'm going to go say four.
31:06A four? Yeah.
31:07Anna?
31:07Er, five, I think. Hang on.
31:11Time's up.
31:12Yeah, five. Five.
31:14Five? Yeah.
31:16Sabrina?
31:17Want.
31:18Thank you. Anna?
31:20Like all of you guys here,
31:22swats.
31:25Swats.
31:26You happy with swats? I'm very happy with swats.
31:28Always like a good swat.
31:30No, Rufus and Susie.
31:31Rufus.
31:33Yeah, sixes.
31:34Waists.
31:35Yep.
31:36Fatsos.
31:38And feints.
31:40Oh.
31:41Moving on, it's 32 to 22.
31:43Nothing in it.
31:44Ten points in it, that's nothing.
31:45As we turn to Anna.
31:47Now then, Anna.
31:48Okay.
31:49So, Rachel, can I have one big one, please?
31:52Yes.
31:53Let's go for two big ones.
31:54Two big, why not?
31:55Throw caution to the wind.
31:56And then let's just have the rest as little tiny ones.
31:59Have a bit of fun, four little ones.
32:01For this round, we have two, two, one, three.
32:09I hope this is a small target, 50 and 25.
32:13And the target, 289.
32:16Two, eight, nine.
32:43Do how much data I would do?
32:47That's a small target.
32:48Anna?
32:50Um...
32:52I've got 185.
32:56185? Yeah.
32:57How interesting. Sabrina?
33:01179.
33:02I think you might just be a shade too far away.
33:08Rufus is working on something.
33:10Let's have a go.
33:123 times 50.
33:143 times 50 is 150.
33:18Yes, I've already gone wrong here.
33:21You're so close to a solution.
33:23Go on, Rachel, give us...
33:24You could have done... You were going to times this by 2 at some point.
33:27Yes. So you were using 3 times 2 equals 6.
33:31Right.
33:31If you take the second 2 away from the 50 for 48,
33:35and then you times those together, you get 288.
33:39And you can add 1.
33:40Oh, well done, Rachel.
33:44APPLAUSE
33:46OK, thank heavens for Rachel.
33:48She gets us out of trouble every time.
33:51Every time.
33:52So, Anna on 32,
33:54Sabrina on 22.
33:55And it's Susie we turn to for her wonderful origins of words.
33:58What have you got for us today, Susie?
34:00Thanks, Nick.
34:01Well, I'm going to talk about flirting today.
34:03It's very first meaning, 500 years ago, was to make a sudden movement.
34:08So to flirt was to move with a spring or a dart.
34:12And that suggests that flirt itself was kind of onomatopoeic.
34:15So it was born for it to sound a little bit like flick, if you like.
34:19But around that same time, a flirt was a woman of giddy and flighty characters.
34:25So it was a bit of an insult.
34:26It was somebody who flitted from thing to thing and kind of courted one man and then quickly moved on
34:31to another.
34:33But one really distinct way of flirting in Europe was the use of a hand fan.
34:37And that use might well have propelled the change in meaning that we know today, from a sudden swift movement
34:42to the courting idea.
34:43Because the whole sign language was developed with fans.
34:47So, for example, placing the fan near the heart was I love you.
34:50And opening a fan meant wait for me.
34:53So there's this whole really kind of complex conversation that would be going on with use of the hand fan.
34:58And that probably, as I say, those sort of quick movements with the fan probably influenced the idea of flirting
35:02that we do today.
35:04But there's a really unusual history of the word in New York City.
35:08And you have to go back to the 8th of January 1902, when reports began to spread like wildfire, that
35:13a bill had been tabled in New York State Assembly.
35:17The punishment was going to be meted out, quite vicious punishment to anyone who was not only drunk and disorderly,
35:22but was also, shall we say, a tiny bit lectorous in their gazes.
35:26But its author, who was a state assemblyman called Francis G. Landon, he put it a lot more bluntly for
35:31the press.
35:32He said, my bill is aimed at the flirters, the mashers and makers of goo-goo eyes in public.
35:37We have all been disgusted with them, so they must be brought to their senses.
35:42The punishment, apparently, for being caught, given these amorous glances, was a $500 fine or up to a year in
35:48prison for flirting on the streets of New York.
35:52You'd think it would never get through, but it did.
35:54And not only that, as one fantastic linguist called Paul Anthony Jones has reported, it's never been repealed, which means
36:00that flirting, technically, is still illegal in New York State.
36:04Whoa!
36:11God, the politician who brought that in.
36:13I know.
36:14Sounds like a lot of fun, doesn't he?
36:17Thank you, Susie.
36:18Excellent as ever.
36:19Now let's have a teaser, which is bits below.
36:22And the clue, some of his bits below the waistline could do with toning up.
36:28Some of his bits below the waistline could do with toning up.
36:47Welcome back.
36:48I left with the clue, some of his bits below the waistline could do with toning up.
36:53The answer to that is the wobbliest bits could do with toning up.
36:58Wobbliest.
37:0032 to 22, and it's Anna we turn to.
37:03Yes, Anna?
37:04Letters game.
37:05Letters game.
37:06Right.
37:06Rachel, please, could I have a consonant?
37:09You can indeed.
37:10Thank you, Anna.
37:11R.
37:12Please may I have a vowel?
37:14O.
37:16And could I have another vowel, please?
37:18E.
37:19Could I have a consonant, please?
37:21N.
37:22And a consonant?
37:24G.
37:25And a vowel?
37:27A.
37:29And a consonant?
37:31T.
37:33And a vowel?
37:35U.
37:37And a consonant, please.
37:38And the last one.
37:40R.
37:42Stand by.
37:43And a consonant, please.
37:46And a consonant, please.
37:47And a consonant, please.
37:52And a consonant, please.
37:54And a consonant, please.
37:54And a consonant, please.
37:55And a consonant, please.
37:58And a consonant, please.
38:00And a consonant, please.
38:01And a consonant, please.
38:01And a consonant, please.
38:01And a consonant, please.
38:01And a consonant, please.
38:02And a consonant, please.
38:02And a consonant, please.
38:02And a consonant, please.
38:02And a consonant, please.
38:02And a consonant, please.
38:03And a consonant, please.
38:03And a consonant, please.
38:04And a consonant, please.
38:04And a consonant, please.
38:07And a consonant, please.
38:08And a consonant, please.
38:13Anna.
38:15Well, I'm not sure if this is an actual word.
38:19How many?
38:20If so, I've got eight.
38:21Eight? Oh, we like this.
38:23And Sabrina.
38:26Six.
38:27Sabrina.
38:28Greater.
38:29Yes.
38:31Now, Anna.
38:33Turngate.
38:35Ooh.
38:35You need two T's for turngate.
38:38Oh, no!
38:39You've done it again.
38:40But if it's any consolation, it's not in.
38:42Oh.
38:43LAUGHTER
38:44Sorry.
38:46I'm not sure that helped.
38:48No.
38:48I'm devastated.
38:50What about the corner?
38:51Gaunt has there for seven.
38:53Another six, orange.
38:55But there's an eight.
38:57There is, yes.
38:58Outrange.
38:59So a gun might outrange another.
39:01Outrange.
39:02APPLAUSE
39:08Well done, Sabrina.
39:09Whose game it now is?
39:11It's a letters game for you, Sabrina.
39:12OK.
39:13I'll have a vowel, please.
39:15Thank you, Sabrina.
39:16A.
39:17And another?
39:18E.
39:20And a consonant?
39:22B.
39:23And another consonant?
39:25Q.
39:26Oh, sorry.
39:29And a consonant?
39:31L.
39:33And another?
39:34G.
39:37Vowel, please.
39:39Try for you.
39:40I.
39:40I'll get you.
39:41No.
39:42A consonant?
39:44T.
39:46And another consonant?
39:49And the last one.
39:50W.
39:51Who are you?
39:53Standby.
39:54T.
39:54T.
39:54T.
39:55T.
39:56T.
39:57T.
39:58T.
39:59T.
40:00T.
40:00T.
40:01T.
40:01T.
40:03T.
40:04T.
40:14T.
40:14T.
40:15T.
40:15T.
40:16T.
40:17T.
40:18T.
40:18T.
40:23Well, Sabrina?
40:26Um, very risky five.
40:30Anna?
40:31I think I've only got four.
40:34And your four, Anna?
40:36Wait, so I can see at the moment.
40:39Sabrina?
40:41I know this isn't even a word.
40:44Glib.
40:45Glib?
40:46It could be.
40:47Oh.
40:47It sounds great.
40:49Glib would be there.
40:50Um, but not Lye.
40:52Oh, that's bad luck.
40:54What about the corner now then?
40:56Um, Lye Gate is there and also Blewett,
40:59which is an edible European mushroom.
41:02The Blewett.
41:02Thank you for that.
41:03All right.
41:04So, scores Anna.
41:05Well done, Anna.
41:0636 to Sabrina's 28 as we turn expectantly and enthusiastically
41:11to Rachel for another numbers game.
41:13Rachel?
41:14Yes, I get the final selection.
41:15And has just eight points in it, ten points to get the target bang on.
41:19So, I'm going to give you possibly the easiest of all the selections.
41:22I'm going to give you two large.
41:23It's the one that's most likely to have possible answers
41:25and most likely to score you some points.
41:27So, we're going two large and four little.
41:29And remember the tips.
41:30And good luck, as the final numbers are six, nine, two, five, 25 and 100.
41:40And the target to reach, 743.
41:43Seven, four, three.
41:46Seven, four, three.
42:19Seven, four, five.
42:24Is that right?
42:25Two away.
42:26Anna?
42:27730.
42:29Over to you, Sabrina.
42:31We've got to be within the ten.
42:33Sabrina?
42:34Yes.
42:38Two plus five.
42:39Two plus five is seven.
42:41I think I might have used the same number again.
42:44Times that by 100.
42:45Times it by 100 for 700.
42:48Then I did five times nine, which is 45.
42:52Oh, I'm so sorry.
42:53So, let's turn to Rachel.
42:55743, Rachel.
42:56I think we have a student in Dictionary Corner today, actually,
42:58that's been unpicking.
43:00Should we go over to him?
43:01I think he might be a teacher's pet.
43:03Rufus.
43:03Forget to Rufus.
43:04Six times five times 25.
43:06Six times five is 30.
43:08Times 25 is 750.
43:11And then minus nine.
43:13Minus nine.
43:14Oh, sorry.
43:15Nine minus two.
43:16Nine minus two is seven.
43:18I'm taking them away.
43:19743.
43:19Well done, Rufus.
43:20Well done, Rufus.
43:25Can I just explain how I got that?
43:27Yeah.
43:28Susie wrote it down and put it in front of me.
43:33Now then, 36 plays 28, and it's conundrum time, chaps.
43:38Yes?
43:38Yes.
43:39Things on buzzers.
43:40Let's do it.
43:40Breathing slowly.
43:42We're about to roll today's Countdown Conundrum.
43:45Here it goes.
44:07Hello, Anna.
44:09Shakedown.
44:10Shakedown.
44:11Let's see whether you're right.
44:14Oh, well done.
44:17Well done, Nick.
44:19It is.
44:20All right.
44:2246.
44:23Good score.
44:2446, page 28.
44:25Well done, Anna.
44:26We have to say to Sabrina, bad luck.
44:30Thank you, Nick.
44:30Thank you so much.
44:31I know you sometimes say people do better at home, but I can honestly say, this is my best game.
44:38Well done, indeed.
44:39Well done.
44:39And Anna, terrific stuff.
44:41You get a piece of kryptonite.
44:42Do I?
44:42This is for you.
44:43Yeah.
44:44To keep forever and a day.
44:46Thank you very much, indeed.
44:47It's been a pleasure.
44:48All right.
44:48And so, over in the corner, thank you so much to Rufus and Susie.
44:52Rufus, it's great to have you back, holding the place together.
44:56Well, you know, fresh legs.
44:58And that lovely poem is brilliant.
45:01Susie, see you next time.
45:02See you then.
45:02And, of course, Rachel.
45:03I'm just wondering, does Anna, do you ever do celebrity versions of your show?
45:08Are you...
45:09Is this an audition?
45:10Well, Nick's not officially married.
45:11He's been with Catherine a very long time, but there's no ring on that finger, so...
45:16Nick, we are looking at a senior version.
45:20You'll be getting a very old member.
45:23Now, then, it's a very different show, that, isn't it?
45:25Because as the thing comes up with a senior version, you just see nipples and testicles.
45:32Leave me alone.
45:35I'm all right, I'm telling you.
45:38Everything's fine.
45:39I'm still on active service here.
45:43And thanks to everybody.
45:45Brilliant stuff.
45:46So, thanks to you.
45:48Join us again next time.
45:49You'll be sure of it.
46:08More tomorrow, as sprinter Christina Hurugu gets to sit down for a change.
46:12Well, something to get all fired up about here on More 4.
46:15The Great Pottery Throwdown from the Makers of Bake Off begins at 9 o'clock.
46:19The next Be Afraid Dick.
46:21Angel has got the flamethrower out as we escape to the chateau.
46:25We'll be right back then.
