Cambodia's history began with the kingdoms of Funan and Chenla, which laid the foundation for the rise of the Khmer Empire. Founded by Jayavarman II, the empire expanded across much of Southeast Asia and reached its peak with Angkor as one of the largest cities in the world.

Over time, constant wars with Ayutthaya, along with environmental challenges like floods and droughts, weakened the empire, leading to the loss of territory and the abandonment of Angkor. In the 19th century, Cambodia lost additional lands to Vietnam and Thailand and became a French protectorate.

After gaining independence following World War II, the country experienced internal conflict as the Khmer Rouge took power, which led to a Vietnamese invasion that overthrew the regime and established a new government, shaping the borders of modern Cambodia.
