00:00How did Portugal's territory change over time?
00:02During the Reconquista in the 11th century,
00:05the Christians began pushing the Muslims out of the Iberian Peninsula,
00:09and in 1095, Portugal was created.
00:12But it took them almost 200 years to completely push the Muslims out
00:16and form the borders of Portugal.
00:18In the 15th century, Portugal began exploring the oceans.
00:22They gained a massive colony in South America,
00:24built colonies across Africa, including Goa in India,
00:28Macau in China, and even controlled East Timor.
00:32In 1580, they united with Spain and formed the Iberian Union.
00:36But only 60 years later, they separated again.
00:39In 1807, Portugal was conquered by Napoleon Bonaparte,
00:43forcing the royal family to flee to Brazil.
00:46Although they soon returned to Portugal,
00:48this led to Brazil declaring independence,
00:50making Portugal lose most of its empire instantly.
00:53During the 20th century, they lost their colonies one by one,
00:57leaving Portugal with its modern borders.
