00:00Moorfield Station has been serving passengers in Liverpool for almost 50 years,
00:04and now a major upgrade project is entering its final stages.
00:08The station, which opened in 1977 as a replacement for Liverpool Exchange Railway Station,
00:14sits on the Liverpool Loop Line and connects with other underground stations,
00:18including Central, Lyme Street and St James Street.
00:21The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority announced funding for a £1 million overhaul
00:25with the aim of improving the station's appearance and accessibility.
00:28The first phase of the work includes new stairs connecting upper levels,
00:32replacing the previous approach to the station entrance.
00:35Final work is understood to include fitting glass panels before the project is complete.
00:40Planning documents submitted by Mersey Travel said the current layout,
00:43including the raised station foyer, had created areas where antisocial behaviour could take place.
00:49The documents describe the space beneath the foyer as a difficult environment
00:52and some changes would help improve passenger experience.
00:55The wider proposals include a new retail opportunity at ground floor level,
01:00improved cycle storage and clear access from street level to the station entrance.
01:04Mersey Travel also said the changes would help re-establish Moorfields
01:08as a stronger feature within the city's streetscape.
01:11The station was originally designed as part of Liverpool's 1960s and 1970s pedestrian network,
01:17which separated walking routes from road traffic.
01:20While access through existing escalators remain unchanged,
01:22the new improvements are intended to make journeys easier
01:25and the station easier to identify from surrounding streets.
