00:00The £2 bus fare cap will remain in place until the end of 2025, Metro Mercy Steve Rotherham has announced.
00:08The decision, the mayor says, offers support to residents ahead of the festive season and forms part of his wider strategy to make public transport more affordable and accessible across the Liverpool City region, especially as the bus network transitions to franchising and public ownership.
00:24Introduced in September 2022, with funding from the region's Bus Services Improvement Plan settlement, the cap has helped bus passenger numbers bounce back following the pandemic.
00:36Last November, the mayor extended the city region's bus fare cap until this September in response to the national fare cap rising to £3 in January.
00:46The mayor told BBC Radio Mayor's side that the cap would be reviewed in January 2026.
00:52Bus travel is the most popular form of public transport in the Liverpool City region, accounting for over 80% of all journeys made every single day.
01:03Since taking the office, the mayor has delivered key improvements to public transport across the region.
01:08This includes the introduction of £500 million of publicly owned trains and the launch of the tap and go smart ticketing system.
01:17A combined authority spokesman said supporting young people remains a priority, with the My Ticket fare cap allowing unlimited all-day bus travel for just £2.20.
01:28Earlier this year, the mayor also introduced a free travel pass for care leavers aged 18 to 21.
