00:08Good afternoon and welcome to Countdown.
00:10It's Father's Day on Sunday.
00:12Chance to say thank you to all the great dads out there.
00:15I have to say, I think it's a total con.
00:18You don't need a day to reward dads
00:21because being a dad is the best thing in the world anyway
00:23from the moment, the first moment that your kids are born.
00:26I mean, who else would you happily let vomit and pee on you?
00:31No one.
00:33Yes, kids can break your heart with a single tear
00:35and it can fill you with so much pride that you could absolutely burst.
00:39I mean, my kids, Robbie, Matt and Olivia,
00:42and they make me so proud, so happy and so poor.
00:48And the other great thing about being a dad is that, to my kids, I'm a giant.
00:53Well, actually, not to Robbie and Matt anymore.
00:57They're 12 and 11 and they're as tall as I am now.
01:00But to Olivia, I'm a giant.
01:02Though when she's eight that might not be the case.
01:06Hi, Rachel.
01:07Hi, Jeff.
01:08You're a daddy's girl.
01:09I bet you can twist your dad round your little finger.
01:11I'm a daddy's girl when it comes to daddy using your season ticket this week.
01:15Oh.
01:17We bond over the football.
01:18Just like me and you, you know, my other dad.
01:20Yes.
01:21Oh, right.
01:22I thought you were going to say granddad for a minute.
01:24It could have been worse.
01:26Let's meet our contestants, shall we?
01:27Two new contestants this week.
01:29First of all, Matt Croy, who's from Oldham.
01:31He's a police officer with Greater Manchester Police.
01:34Matt's hobbies include going to the gym and music,
01:37and he particularly enjoys creating mashups.
01:40Well, very similar to me, because I like fry-ups,
01:42and it's the same sort of thing, is it?
01:44Not quite, Jeff.
01:44So what's a mashup then, Matt?
01:46Basically, it's when you take the music from one song
01:49and the loops from another, fuse it together to make a new song.
01:52Right.
01:52So it's become a bit of an obsession of mine.
01:53I've done quite a few now.
01:55Nothing to do with food.
01:56That's a bit disappointing.
01:57Okay.
01:58Matt's a bit of a football fan as well.
02:00He's a Grimsby Town supporter.
02:01Yeah, I grew up in Grimsby, so I was seasoned to get older there.
02:04Okay.
02:05Matt Croy is one of our two countdown debutants today.
02:08Up against him is Barry Crawford,
02:09who is a retired modern languages teacher from East Kilbride.
02:13He's been a member of the local Gilbert and Sullivan Society for the past 35 years.
02:17Have you got a favourite work?
02:19Oh, the one you're doing at the time is always very, you know, the one you really enjoy doing it.
02:25The Mercado is one of my favourites.
02:26I've played the part five times.
02:28Brilliant.
02:29It's great sing-along stuff as well, isn't it?
02:31Fantastic, yeah.
02:33Now, Barry's a qualified football ref.
02:35When he was teaching, you taught Ali McCoy.
02:39That's correct, yes.
02:40I taught him.
02:41I used to referee him as a school boy.
02:43Yeah.
02:44Yeah.
02:45When you were teaching, what was he like?
02:46Was he an imp who sat at the back of class?
02:48He always said I weren't.
02:51Very popular for the girls too.
02:53Was he?
02:54Okay.
02:55Barry Crawford against Matt Croy.
03:01And joining Susie Dent in Dictionary Corner.
03:03He's the daddy of impressions.
03:04It's John Culshaw.
03:10Susie, I did promise that you could ask today, you know, John to do one impression of one of your
03:16favourite people.
03:16Well, John mentioned that he once met the very much missed Richard Whiteley, so I was wondering if you could
03:21do Richard Boris.
03:22Oh, yes.
03:22Yes, indeed.
03:24This was at a comic relief party that Richard and I bumped into each other, and we'd been doing quite
03:29a lot of Richard and Countdown sketches on Dead Ringers at the time.
03:33And he said, so, hello.
03:35Yes.
03:36So, yeah.
03:37Done the studio up a bit.
03:39Very nice too.
03:40Very nice too.
03:41So, Countdown starts now.
03:45And he said, so, I thought I had, you know, I thought I was nondescript.
03:50What do I do?
03:51What do I say?
03:52And I said, well, you say, Countdown.
03:54And he went, Countdown.
03:55And I said, Countdown.
03:57And he said, Countdown.
03:58And then we both together said, Countdown.
04:01And everyone gave a little round of applause you'd gathered round us.
04:04So that was a lovely meeting.
04:06Lovely.
04:06Great story.
04:07Let's press on with the action, shall we?
04:09Matt has won the toss, and so he gets the first pick of the letters.
04:12Off you go, Matt.

05:42Upstage there for seven.
05:44Very good.
05:45Yes, upstage there for seven, but Matt and Barry, a few nerves settled straight away because they're both on the

10:39Well, there was a nice little five that I spotted.

10:42Royal servant of the true emperor, Jeff Sterling.
10:46But for seven, there's Overman.
10:50Overman.
10:50Overman, a company, would be to provide it with more staff than necessary.

10:57It's our first numbers round coming up.
10:59And Matt, it's you to pick them.
11:00Can I have two from the top, please?
11:02You can.
11:03Thank you, Matt.
11:03Two large ones and four small ones for the first numbers game today.
11:07And for this round, the numbers are one, four, nine, and ten.
11:13And the two large ones, 75, and 50.
11:16And the target to reach 609.
11:1930 seconds, then, to reach 609.
11:22Oh, again.
11:37We're going to facilitate the benefit of our Veryторы series.
11:38Bye-bye.
11:38Oh, again.
11:38Bye-bye.
11:39Bye-bye.
11:44Bye-bye.
11:48Bye-bye.
11:52Looking for 609. Barry how close? 610. And Matt? 610. Okay. Matt, let's have yours then first.
12:019 take 1 is 8. 9 minus 1 is 8. Times 75. Times 75, 600. Plus 10. Plus the 10,
12:07one away, 610.
12:09Barry, same method? Exactly the same.
12:15Okay, so 610, nice and straightforward then. Rachel, what about 609?
12:18Yeah, harder than it looked. If you say 75 times 10 is 750. 4 minus 1 is 3. Times the
12:2750 is 150. Take that away for 600 and add the 9609.
12:39Two countdown debutants, but producing a very good contest at the moment. Matt's on 24 and Barry on 25.
12:45Time to sit back for a couple of minutes now.
12:48John Culshaw has been our guest on Countdown all this week and I have to be honest, I've lost count
12:52of the number of impressions that we've had from John during the course of the week.
12:54They've all been absolutely fantastic.
12:57Can you remember your first impression?
12:59The first sort of proper vocal one would have been Patrick Moore.
13:05I remember watching an episode of The Sky at Night and there was this presenter speaking very quickly indeed all
13:10about wonderful star systems like Betelgeuse and the constellation of Orion.
13:14And he was fascinating and he was fascinating and back in February I joined him and the rest of the
13:19Sky at Night team on the 700th edition of the programme and we were preparing to record part of the
13:26show in Patrick Moore's study in his home.
13:28And there on his wall is the certificate of his knighthood and beneath it there was sort of like a
13:36crested cross, rather like a medal.
13:38And he saw me looking at it and he says, do you know what that cross there is for?
13:42And so I said, well, is this something that you were honoured with through your time in the RAF?
13:47Is this something like something along the lines of a Victoria cross or some sort of military honour?
13:52And he says, no, it came out of a Christmas cracker.
13:59Oh, that's one of your earliest ones.
14:00What about your most recent ones?
14:01Because I suppose it's a constant battle to keep updating.
14:04Yes, you've always got to keep looking for the new characters.
14:06A favourite of recent times, I think...
14:10I would say probably Fabio Capello because they...
14:15I like the...
14:16It seems as though he learnt a few more words of English every post-match interview.
14:21And they...
14:22I think he sort of reminds me of Tommy Cooper a little bit.
14:26I think somebody took his language tape away and replaced it with a DVD of Tommy Cooper.
14:30Because you just expect him someday to say, well, he won a good game.
14:35Rooney, Gerard, Gerard, Rooney, Rooney, Gerard.
14:39He has to do it on the borderline.
14:42Brilliant.
14:43John, thank you very much indeed once again.
14:45Matt has 24, then Barry has 25.
14:48Here's your first teaser today.
14:50The words are trod code.
14:53Trod code.
14:54And the clue falsified his documents to get through medical school.
14:57Falsified his documents to get through medical school.
15:14Falsified his documents to get through medical school.
15:17Doctored is the answer to our first teaser of the day.
15:21Good contest between two newcomers to count down.
15:24Matt Croy has got 24 at the moment.
15:26Barry Crawford with a very narrow lead.
15:28He's on 25.

20:22Yeah.
20:22Which has been cropping up pretty consistently recently, yeah.
20:26Yes.
20:27John, Susie, anything else?
20:29Yeah, there's a nice eight lurking about, isn't there, which is Bergamot's.
20:33I thought that was a detective, but apparently not.
20:36But it is an oily substance extracted from the rind of a dwarf variety of Seville orange.
20:44So there, OK.

22:05Carpet.
22:06Yep. Good for six.
22:10What have we got in a dictionary corner?
22:11A couple of sevens over here.
22:14One of them erratic.
22:16That's a good word. Erratic.
22:18One of my favourites.
22:19And partier.
22:20Someone who parties.
22:22We've got partier.
22:23For seven.
22:24Very good.
22:25Another break for them now because we're back off to dictionary corner.
22:29It's origins of words time.
22:30For the last time this week, Susie, what have you got for us?
22:32Well, I was quite amused to see on an American dictionary maker's website
22:37their top ten British words.
22:39So the words that for them were quintessentially British
22:41and ones that just caught their fancy.
22:43So I thought I'd give you a selection of them today.
22:45The first one was prat, which is quite British.
22:49It probably comes from 16th century slang word prat, meaning buttocks.
22:53So the original pratfall was a fall on your bottom.
22:57Twi, they liked.
22:58And that's a baby talk alteration of sweet.
23:00And it first appeared in Punch magazine in 1905.
23:04Plonk, a cheap wine.
23:06That's short for vin blanc, white wine.
23:08And finally, Wally, which is very, again, very British.
23:11Many theories about this one.
23:12Most popular involves a Wally who was separated from his friends at a 1960s pop festival.
23:17The name was announced over a loudspeaker.
23:19The whole crowd chanted Wally, Wally.
23:22And so the word became cemented in English.
23:25Mm-hm.
23:30Thanks, Susie.

30:48sonar. Hmm. Now, any advance on five over in Dictionary Corner? Well, there's salons for
30:55six. And sonars. What do we think of sonars? Yes, we can actually put the S on. The system
31:02for detecting objects underwater is a math noun. But actually, the apparatus that you
31:06use to detect objects underwater is a count noun. So you can add the S for six. Okay.
31:12But six is as good as it gets. And this is the final numbers round of the contest. Barry,
31:17it's you to pick those numbers again. Have the same again, please, Rachel. One from the

32:4132. Times 10. Times 10, 320. One the other way. It's Father's Day, shall I do this one? Go on,
32:48it's not quite Father's Day, but it is almost. I've probably gone all around the houses, but I've got 50
32:53minus 5 is 45. 50 minus 5, 45. And I've multiplied it by the 7 for 315. For 315. And
33:01that leaves you a 4 you can add on. And 4, nicely done, 319.
33:09Probably wasn't the easiest way to get there, but there we are. Matt's on 86 then. Barry is on 50.
