Dear Friends,
I was asked by a client on a one-to-one call how I colour grade my footage in DaVinci Resolve and the easiest way to explain it was to make this video of my process.... so I hope you will find this useful and of interest as well.

Thanks for watching.!

00:01okay so hello my friends and welcome to another video today I thought I would make a what I hope
00:08will be a quick tutorial on my process for color grading footage in DaVinci Resolve which I was
00:15asked about just the other day during an online consult and I promised that I would make this
00:22video for her to show my process as it's a lot easier to do in this format than on during
00:30an
00:30online call but hopefully you'll find it of some interest and value as well I should preface this
00:37by saying that I am in no way a professional video editor what I'm about to show you I've
00:44been shown by friends in the industry and following along on a lot of online tutorials from some very
00:51talented editors it's a process that I don't particularly understand the science behind it
00:58I just know that with these settings it works for me and my footage and the various cameras that I
01:05use
01:06so I'll get the screen recording and open up DaVinci and dive right in okay so I've got the screen
01:16recording now and I'm in DaVinci I've opened up a project and imported a couple of clips from the
01:26jackals hide that I was at the other day so from the black magic camera my cinema camera of the
01:33jackals
01:33and of and from the lumix camera that I record myself on here and I'll go through the grading that
01:41I do on
01:41those so once I've opened up a project and imported my clips in DaVinci I navigate to the cog at
01:52the
01:52bottom right of the window here and what I want to do here is set up the color science and
02:01mode format
02:03that I want to be editing my timeline in and I start off where are my hair color management I've
02:15been told
02:16and it seems to work that setting your timeline up in the DaVinci wide gamma color space is the best
02:26for
02:26editing pretty much all footage from all sources whether it's a high-end ARRI camera or a little
02:36Panasonic like I'm using here so color science I set to DaVinci Y RGB timeline color space DaVinci wide
02:46gamma intermediate and output color space same as timeline I then navigate down to camera raw I make
02:55sure that the raw profile is set to black magic raw decode quality is full resolution and decode using
03:05the project settings color science gen 5 white balance as shot which is logical because every shot will have
03:17a different white balance depending on the conditions color space DaVinci wide gamut gamma again DaVinci intermediate
03:29and having made sure those are pretty much just the settings that I use I'll save those and carry on
03:35you can also save those as a just open that up again if you click on the three dots at
03:40the top right here
03:41you can save it as a preset which I've done here so that every time just load the preset and
03:48you're good to go
03:51okay so having loaded up my clips onto my timeline I'll then navigate over to the color space module here
04:01at the bottom and the first thing I do is I set up four nodes so I've got one already
04:09there so option s will add extra nodes in series
04:15for the last node here opening up the effects tab I choose color space transform and just drop it onto
04:25that last node here on the right you'll see the settings that you want so this image here of the
04:36Jackal is shot on
04:37my black magic so everything is going to be DaVinci here so input color space will be DaVinci wide gamut
04:46input gamma will be again DaVinci intermediate output color space is always rec 709 and output gamma is always gamma
04:592.4
05:01I can close that tab up now and this node is done so basically that's what after all you do
05:10after all the edits that you do here
05:12um this is what it's going to output the file to um you can also see if whilst I was
05:20doing that you can actually see the difference that it's made without actually making any adjustments to the image
05:26I want as I turn that node on and off you can see the image here on the left the
05:32difference that it makes to it
05:34um and it actually means that I have very little to do as long as I've got my exposure right
05:39in camera
05:41there's very little I actually need to do to the image so um on the bottom left down here we
05:48have
05:48um it's a little bit different the um terminology in video than it is for photography if that's your background
05:57so offset is basically global adjustment to exposure uh which I can change by moving that dial
06:07gain is your highlights gamma is your mid-tones and lift if you like is your um shadows
06:15so for this particular image I don't actually need to do that much but I'll just bring the mid-tones
06:21down ever so slightly
06:22and I'll bring the shadows down so slightly as well which will help with the contrast in the next step
06:28and the next step okay so having done my um uh exposure control I can if necessary do some changes
06:38to the
06:39make some changes to the uh color if there's any color cast and I could choose basically uh between the
06:46channels here on each of the highlights mid-tones and shadows of blue green red and uh white
06:56um so literally if I just move the the bar up and down I can make those changes uh to
07:04taste basically um
07:07so I don't particularly want to touch the color balance on this particular image so I'm not going to do
07:13anything
07:13there uh I then move on to my second node and on my second node um I add in um
07:20using this um module here
07:23uh uh a very slight s curve which gives the image a little bit of a a kick in terms
07:33of contrast and saturation
07:36as you can see the adjust the image is changing as I make that slight s and put in that
07:43slight s curve
07:45okay so that looks quite nice to me and then in the third node uh this being raw footage
07:51um I just add a little bit of sharpness um by dialing down this uh bar here and normally 0
08:02.42 is about the level
08:04that I um I like 0.42 0.44 for the um footage out of the black magic cinema uh
08:13and that's it really um that's the whole process
08:16um of uh processing color grading this footage uh which I think looks pretty nice um just to show you
08:31that uh
08:33even though I have set up the color space on the timeline with da Vinci da Vinci defaults if you
08:42like the
08:42wide gamut intermediate setting you can have um you can grade in the same way uh footage from a different
08:53camera so um I've also got this of me in the hide which is shot on the little panasonic lumix
09:00here which
09:00is my little vlogging camera so once again in the color module I'll add the extra nodes option s
09:09uh take the last node and in this case I add the color space transform uh but input color space
09:17and
09:17input gamma I use the panasonic um log option here so uh input color space panasonic v gamut uh input
09:30gamma
09:30uh again panasonic v log because I'm shooting in uh v log output color space again rec 709 and timeline
09:41um output gamma uh gamma 2.4
09:47so as you can see I'll switch this on and off again you can see the difference in the image
09:54as I switch that on
09:55and off uh it's made uh really nice colors in there um so all I'd need to do is just
10:02lift the exposure
10:03slightly uh which I'll do in my first node here um navigate down to my primaries tab so I will
10:14lift the
10:15highlights a bit brighten image up lift the mid-tones a bit and I can actually just to have a
10:24little bit more
10:24contrast drop my shadows slightly maybe okay uh in the next node again I go to my um curves tab
10:42uh again
10:43I will add in the slightest of s curves which again will give it that little bit of punch with
10:53contrast
10:54and saturation uh and that looks pretty nice I think and then in the final one final node up here
11:03I'll
11:04navigate to my uh blur sharpen uh module and add a little bit of sharpening I don't do as much
11:14uh on the um
11:17vlog footage uh as I do on the um black magic footage uh so if I go full frame on
11:23that you can see
11:25it's pretty nicely color balanced um I should add that I'm I'm not doing uh any fancy color grades in
11:33terms of the um quote cinematic looks that a lot of people go for on youtube or especially for my
11:41wildlife
11:42footage all I want is uh accurate color reproduction to make it look nice and punchy uh shots so that's
11:50pretty much it really um I hope you found this useful um like I said it seems to work for
11:57me uh so I hope
11:59uh it will do the same for you thanks so much for watching uh I hope you found it useful
12:04and I'll see
12:05you again soon bye for now
12:13you
