00:00Sarawak Parti Pesaka Bumi Putra Bersatu Information Chief Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah
00:06has described former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's call for Malays to vote only for
00:13Malay candidates at the next general election as definitely irresponsible.
00:18He warned that such a call was not progressive and could lead to a divided Malaysia.
00:25Karim said political leaders must avoid fueling racial and religious extremism and instead
00:31emulate Sarawak's model of unity. Mahathir last week urged Malay voters to support
00:37only Malay candidates, regardless of party affiliation, to protect what he described as
00:44Tanah Melayu. Political analyst James Chin of the University of Tasmania said Mahathir was
00:51effectively calling for ethnic solidarity. Asked whether PAS should counter by saying
00:57its non-Malay candidates or even those from other parties are worthy of support, Chin said
01:03it would be best for the Islamic party to stay out of the issue.
01:08PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang has previously said the party is willing to work with non-Muslim
01:14parties and NGOs that are not extremist despite ideological differences.
