00:00Bali has long been a favorite hotspot for digital nomads but has it gotten too expensive in 2025
00:07and beyond? G'day guys I'm Lloyd and my wife Mandy and I lived in Bali in 2022 for six months
00:14and after almost four years away we just moved back here with our one-year-old daughter and
00:20we've been here for about one month and one of the biggest questions we get asked by everybody is
00:25hasn't gotten too expensive because you see a lot of news articles and a lot of stories a lot of
00:30people posting videos about how expensive Bali has gotten over the last few years so in today's
00:37video I'm going to break down all of our costs and what we've spent after one month of living here
00:42I'm going to tell you everything that's changed all the prices that have gone up some of the things
00:48that haven't changed that are still very cheap and at the end of the video I'm going to give you
00:52some tips on how you can save money if you do want to come to Bali on a budget so
00:56the short answer
00:57really is yes Bali has gotten a lot more expensive than it used to be but it still really is
01:03good
01:04value because of the value of living that you actually get here for the money you spend in
01:09compared to other countries so I'll get straight to it accommodation has increased massively in fact
01:16I remember when we came here at the end of 2021 at the start of 2022 now it was sort
01:22of right at the
01:22end of COVID so you need to take that into account but we were staying at a guest house for
01:26like
01:27I remember it was about six or seven hundred dollars a month for a guest house just a basic sort
01:32of room
01:33that same guest house now is probably around fifteen hundred dollars there's been so much development
01:39as far as property and villas there's literally property going up all over the place because the
01:45demand is just still so high everybody wants to live in Canggu Ubud or Uluwatu and the owners of
01:53these properties they know it they know that they can charge a lot more now what you used to get
01:58for
01:59about fifteen hundred dollars in Canggu you're looking at at least three thousand dollars a month and I'm
02:04going to put the conversions to everything down below here but as an example we have just been
02:09staying in a really nice villa here in Pereirinan it's close to the beach it's about a five minute
02:16motorbike ride it's got a pool it's two bedrooms two bathrooms it's very new it's about two or three
02:23years old it's in a really good location as I said there's a gym right across the road and we're
02:27paying
02:2740 million IDR per month which is roughly two and a half thousand US dollars now that may seem
02:34like a lot but when you actually take into account everything that this villa offers like it's
02:39probably at the higher end of villas here in Canggu you can get villas a lot cheaper if you're willing
02:46to be a bit further away from the action or a bit further away from the beach maybe you're willing
02:51to
02:51give up some comforts like we get included with our rent we get housekeeping included as well as pool
02:58maintenance and it also has a washer and dryer which is huge because we have a baby so we're pretty
03:03much
03:03doing washing like every day but so yeah accommodation in general you're probably paying
03:07double what you would have three years ago which is a shame because Bali used to give such great value
03:13all around that's the whole reason we moved here we came here because we wanted to build our online
03:18business and reduce our cost of living significantly but unfortunately it seems like everywhere in the
03:25world it's just getting more and more expensive to live and Bali is no different but so because we're a
03:31family and we're obviously renting a slightly bigger villa if you're a single person or even just a
03:37couple that doesn't have children you could easily get away with a one-bedroom villa and you're probably
03:41looking at around 25 to 30 million per month if you want to be in a good area and if
03:47you're willing
03:47to drive a little bit further you could probably drop that up to around 20 million per month and as
03:52I
03:52mentioned earlier there's still guest houses where you can pay around 15 million for a guest house
03:57room which is quite good value but honestly outside of accommodation we haven't really noticed prices
04:03have gone up too much like scooter rentals are still really cheap here it has gone up a little bit
04:09I
04:09remember paying around about 1.3 million a month for an NMAX scooter and now it's about 1.8 so
04:16that's
04:17definitely gone up a little bit but compared to Thailand and other places like the Philippines Mexico
04:24scooter rentals still really cheap and getting around in general like grab taxis hasn't changed
04:30it still costs barely anything to jump in a grab taxi or on the back of a grab motorbike and
04:36get
04:36anywhere like if you want to go from Canggu to Uluwatu for example you're looking at only about 300,000
04:43rupiah so it's really cheap to get around still very good value as for food and eating out I would
04:49say
04:50there's definitely like more trendy hot spots and they charge a little bit extra but when you're
04:55comparing like prices to Australia and Canada in the US and places in Europe it's still like a third
05:01of the price it's so cheap to go out even in a nice restaurant we go out to eat a
05:06few times a week and we
05:07mix it up sometimes we go to local warongs which is ridiculously cheap like we'll pay about a hundred
05:13thousand for all of us to eat which is like seven dollars or something with a drink and then sometimes
05:18if we
05:19want to go a little bit on the higher end like a not a not a fancy restaurant or anything
05:23like that
05:23but maybe we feel like getting Mexican or sushi or Greek food or something like the bill usually with
05:30a couple of drinks is three to four hundred thousand maybe five hundred thousand which you just can't do
05:36back home the grocery stores have definitely improved we know that when we were here in 2022 we
05:42struggled to find decent groceries and it seems like the grocery stores have expanded and they've
05:48got a lot more options and they're more grocery stores as well the prices have gone up like
05:53everywhere like it feels like groceries just all over the world have gone up but I would say yeah
05:58they're still really affordable if you want to do some cooking at home honestly you're probably not
06:02really saving any money because it is so cheap to go eat at a local warong it's just a matter
06:07of
06:07whether or not you want to eat out for every meal and then we have our health or travel insurance
06:12which is through safety wing Mandy and I pay a combined hundred and twelve dollars per month
06:17for our safety wing insurance and that covers all three of us including our daughter if any of us
06:22need to go to the hospital or to the doctor or anything like that we're completely covered and
06:28that's honestly one of the biggest I feel like hesitations for people especially from Australia and
06:33Canada and even Europe because like we have sort of a socialized healthcare system where you get free
06:40healthcare and people are pretty hesitant to go and live somewhere like Bali because you're giving
06:46up free healthcare but in my honest opinion having lived in Australia and Canada for a long time and
06:52then spent time in Bali I can tell you right now the healthcare system isn't the best in Canada or
06:58Australia like I have family members who have had to wait months and months just to get booked in for
07:04like a simple scan and this is the same in a lot of countries in Bali yes you do have
07:09to pay for your
07:10own healthcare but you can walk into a hospital or a clinic with pretty much any problem and they're
07:16going to treat you right away and because we're covered by our travel insurance we get reimbursed for
07:22any costs that we have as far as any health issues go so we use the safety wing nomad essential
07:28plan
07:29which is about $56 each for me and Mandy and that fits us perfectly because we can travel anywhere all
07:36over
07:36the world and still be covered so even if we stay here in Bali we just keep our plan and
07:42if we need a trip to
07:43the doctor or anything like that we're reimbursed pretty much instantly we actually both got dengue fever the
07:49first time we came here like the first week we were here we both got dengue and we were in
07:55a really bad shape
07:55actually we had to get nurses around to the guest house we were staying in for like 10 days straight
08:00both of us couldn't get out of bed we had to do daily blood tests and IVs and it was
08:05looking pretty
08:05bad and it wasn't a good start to our trip and it kind of scared us a little bit because
08:10the doctor's
08:11bills were racking up we literally had like three nurses coming to our room every single day for 10 days
08:17which was a couple thousand dollars and it's not how you want to spend your first month in Bali but
08:23safety wing covered us they covered every single bit of it and reimbursed us within 30 days but if
08:28you're super worried about the health care system and getting sick i'd probably recommend bumping up
08:35to the safety wing nomad complete plan because it's more like a private health insurance it even covers
08:41you for things like maternity so we were on this plan when we were in thailand and it covered
08:45mandy's entire pregnancy as well as postpartum and everything like that and yeah you can add one child
08:51per member under the age of 10 and they're completely covered so if the health system's
08:56something you're super worried about here and you want to include it into your budget uh it's not
09:00expensive to be covered by safety wing and if you have to go to the doctor or hospital god forbid
09:06you're completely covered if you want to check them out we'll leave a link down below in the pinned
09:11comment as well as in the description and uh it's an affiliate code as well so if you do use
09:16their link
09:17you'll be helping our channel out and then when it comes to wellness so like gyms and massages and
09:22stuff like that gyms have always been i would say a little bit more expensive here than in some other
09:30places but the gyms are amazing like they're epic they have things like ice baths and saunas um even
09:36the yoga studios have like recovery zones in them as well as like the mma gyms they all have ice
09:43baths and
09:43saunas and stuff and although you you probably will end up paying about two million a month for
09:49a really really good membership um you're going to get a lot of bang for your buck and the gym
09:55i go to
09:56it's only a million for one month and it's really really good so you can go on the cheaper end
10:01as well
10:01so yes the price has gone up significantly when it comes to rent and accommodation but everything else
10:08i feel like is still extremely reasonable and for us the equation here isn't just price it's what you
10:14get back in both time lifestyle uh support and just comfort so like for example we have a nanny here
10:22we
10:23never could have afforded a nanny back home uh we pay about a hundred thousand per hour for a nanny
10:29we also have housekeeping and we can get our groceries and food and everything delivered so that we can focus
10:36on the important things like working uh and obviously being with our daughter and yes there's a
10:42lot of traffic especially here in changu which can be really frustrating but you can avoid that by
10:47getting stuff delivered to you or just timing it so you're not going out during peak hours which is
10:52kind of what we do but honestly even though it's so busy here we absolutely love it because there's just
10:59such a good creative vibe here like everybody's kind of creating something whether it's a business
11:04uh it just feels like there's such a creator community here and paying a little bit extra for
11:11accommodation feels like it's worth it mandy and i like to sit down once a week and go through
11:16everything kind of like a a work business slash marriage meeting and we go through all of our expenses
11:23and what we're spending just so that we know like if things are getting out of control or if we're
11:27spending too much
11:28here or there or if we have some spare money that we can be investing and so for that reason
11:32i'm able to share with you guys
11:33a pretty good idea of what we've spent during our first month here in changu so first of all our
11:40rent
11:40uh as i said it's 40 million indonesian rupiah per month which is a little expensive but you can
11:46obviously go a lot cheaper than that our nanny we've spent just under 6 million indonesian rupiah
11:52for 60 hours for the month so that's 15 hours per week we just get around three days a week
11:58they
11:58usually do five hour minimum and she's really nice she's amazing mandy's yoga membership uh is
12:05about 1.2 million idr my jujitsu membership is 2 million idr and then i also have a gym which
12:12is
12:12like right across the road that i go to for recovery and weights and stuff like that and
12:17that's 1 million idr now this villa and this is pretty common doesn't actually include electricity you
12:22just pay as you go so there's a meter and you can see when it's starting to run low and
12:26you have to
12:27go and top it up at the store or you can just send money to the landlord sometimes we've kept
12:31track
12:32of how much we've spent and it's just under 3 million indonesian repair for the month so it's not
12:38too bad it's pretty much the same as what we're paying in thailand our scooter was 1.8 million for
12:43the month which is an n max it's kind of like on the bigger side of scooters uh you could
12:48definitely
12:48if you're just a single person or a smaller person even you could rent a smaller scooter for probably
12:551.4 1.5 so as you can see our total cost for our first month uh of living here
13:02in bali it comes to
13:03about 55 million rupiah or around about three and a half thousand us dollars which may seem like a lot
13:09compared to i mean it does seem like a lot to me compared to what we were paying three years
13:13ago i
13:14still feel like the value is so much higher than it is back home even though we are paying a
13:19little
13:19bit more i also didn't include in the monthly costs things like going out so we're like we don't really
13:26go out drinking or anything like that anymore at least not too much but if you're going to be doing
13:30stuff like that then you need to take that into account uh also shopping like if you want to buy
13:35new
13:35clothes super cheap we just went to seminak village there's tons of markets everywhere honestly and we
13:42picked up a bunch of clothes and i think we spent between all three of us like 100 bucks and
13:48i got
13:48like a couple of shirts and shorts man you got a couple outfits and so did lila so everything like
13:53that is still super cheap so there are a few ways to actually make it a lot cheaper living here
14:00uh and
14:01this goes for both families and for singles so if you can negotiate a longer stay so if you're going
14:07to
14:07be here for say six months to a year uh the balinese love getting money up front and they will
14:13give you
14:14a heavy heavy discount so something like a 40 million per month villa you could negotiate it down
14:19to probably about 30 million per month if you're willing to pay for say 12 months up front and that
14:25goes for scooter rental as well like if you're going to be here for a year instead of renting a
14:30scooter you
14:30could easily buy one for a thousand or maybe one and a half thousand dollars um and then sell it
14:37when
14:37you leave or if you're going to be here indefinitely like it's going to pay itself off after about 10
14:41months also as far as accommodation goes as i mentioned you could easily find a cheaper place
14:46just outside of the hot zone so like if you're willing to drive even just an extra honestly five
14:52to seven minutes from the beach or like the center of changu or wherever you're staying you can
14:57easily cut costs in your villa rental there as well and just be smart about where you're eating out too
15:03like it's easy to get caught up in some of the trendy like restaurants and cafes where you're going to
15:08be paying extra but the local warongs are so cheap and the food is honestly so good and they're always
15:14busy
15:15because people who have been here for a long time understand that they may not look fancy or anything
15:20from the outside and you might think oh it's a bit dodgy like eating local food or whatever is it
15:25clean
15:25is it sanitized uh we haven't had any issues and honestly the food's amazing and you pay barely
15:32anything to eat out so if you're going to be spending a little bit extra on accommodation you
15:36can definitely save a lot of money by eating locally and then yeah cooking breakfast or a couple of meals
15:41at home um not going out partying too much you can save a lot of money and then with gyms
15:46and things
15:47like yoga you can get like punch cards um which we find always works out to be a bit cheaper
15:52because
15:52every time we join something for say one month um something comes up and you miss a few classes and
15:59then it seems like you're paying more whereas if you get a punch card um you know exactly how much
16:03you're paying for each time you go to say yoga so if you are a digital nomad or a creator
16:09or just a
16:10remote worker who values community nature and convenience barley still makes a ton of sense and is still
16:18extremely valuable in our opinion even with higher rent like if you want a really nice villa and
16:25you're willing to pay extra for it uh we think it's worth it and with our one-year-old we
16:29feel
16:30really comfortable here like we've already found a couple of restaurants that are really really nice
16:34to take her to that where the staff like look after her and play with her obviously we have mentioned
16:39already that we have access to a nanny and then there's tons of playgrounds around as well that have
16:45cafes attached to them where you can literally just take your kid to play around all day and it
16:50costs like maybe a hundred thousand indonesian rupiah to take your kid there all day so it's super
16:55family friendly as well yes the roads are busy and it can be intimidating but if you wear a helmet
17:00and
17:00use common sense and if you're covered by insurance preferably safety wing um healthcare and pharmacies
17:07are really really good here so you don't need to stress about that so is barley too expensive for us
17:12now
17:12um no i don't think so accommodation's gone up but the overall value of living here i just don't
17:18think you can get anywhere else like we've tried so many different places and nowhere ticks all the
17:24boxes quite like barley does and you can literally go out and meet people every single day you can meet
17:30other families if you're a family or if you're single and you're looking to meet somebody super easy here
17:35as well because there's just such an outgoing friendly vibe here and i think that's part of
17:41what you're paying for by living in bali or staying in bali for a long period of time is you're
17:47paying for
17:48the access to the community as well as everything else so i hope this video was helpful in some way
