Within five years, vegetation cracks through every road and pavement. Animals not seen in cities for centuries return. Within fifty years, forests have swallowed the suburbs. Rivers return to natural courses. Fish populations double. Large predators reclaim lost territories. Within one hundred years, the cities are unrecognisable. Not destroyed. Absorbed. Steel and stone wrapped in forest, half-buried in soil. The pollution drops. The noise drops. The oceans heal. One hundred years. That is all nature needs to erase one hundred thousand years of us. We were the only thing in the way.
