00:00Throughout history, countless civilisations have risen to incredible heights, creating
00:04wonders and shaping the world, only to be swept away by the raw power of nature.
00:11Today, we're journeying back in time to uncover the stories of five remarkable societies that
00:16vanished, leaving behind haunting ruins and enduring mysteries.
00:21Our first stop is the island of Crete, home to the sophisticated Minoan civilisation.
00:27Around 1600 BCE, their world was shattered.
00:30The nearby volcano of Thera erupted with cataclysmic force, unleashing massive tsunamis that swamped
00:36their coastal cities and blanketing the island in a thick layer of ash.
00:41Their advanced society, known for its beautiful palaces and art, couldn't withstand the devastation.
00:46The survivors were forced to flee, and the once-great Minoan culture slowly faded away.
00:52Next, we travelled to North America to discover the ancestral Puebloans, masterbuilders famous
00:59for their breathtaking cliff dwellings.
01:02For centuries, they thrived in the canyons of the southwest, but then the climate shifted.
01:08A series of prolonged, severe droughts stretched on for decades, drying up rivers and withering
01:13their crops.
01:15Life became impossible.
01:16Slowly but surely, community after community abandoned their homes, leaving behind intricate
01:22stone cities clinging to the cliffs.
01:24Silent testaments to a lost way of life.
01:27Now let's head to the fertile plains of what is now Pakistan and northwest India, where the
01:32Indus Valley civilisation flourished.
01:35This was one of the world's earliest urban cultures, with well-planned cities and advanced
01:40sanitation, but their lifeblood, the river, became their downfall.
01:45It's believed that a combination of catastrophic floods, shifting river courses and changing
01:50monsoon patterns, submerged their cities and ruined their agriculture.
01:56Over time, this once-mighty civilisation was swallowed by the landscape, its memory lost
02:01for millennia.
02:02Our fourth story takes us to Southeast Asia, to the incredible Khmer Empire, the builders
02:08of the magnificent Angkor Wat.
02:10This empire was an agricultural powerhouse, thanks to a complex water management system.
02:16But they faced an unpredictable enemy, extreme climate swings.
02:21Decades of devastating droughts were followed by sudden, intense floods, wrecking their agricultural
02:27foundation.
02:27This environmental stress, combined with internal conflicts, led to the gradual decline and eventual
02:34collapse of this legendary empire.
02:37Finally, we sailed to the icy shores of Greenland, where Vikings established settlements that lasted
02:42for centuries.
02:43These hardy Norse farmers and traders adapted to a harsh environment, but they couldn't overcome
02:49a global climate shift.
02:51The onset of the Little Ice Age brought brutally colder temperatures, causing crops to fail and
02:56sea ice to choke their trade routes.
02:58Isolated and unable to adapt quickly enough, the Greenlandic Norse settlements slowly dwindled
03:03until they disappeared completely from history.
03:06These powerful stories are a humbling reminder.
03:10No matter how advanced or powerful a civilisation becomes, we are all part of a fragile balance
03:15with the natural world.
03:17The rise and fall of these great societies teach us about resilience, the crucial need for
03:21adaptation, and the undeniable power of nature to change the course of human history.
