00:00It seems like sometimes, though, we're not satisfied with that.
00:03Sometimes we feel like there's something more for us, something greater, that we should be striving for.
00:10But even if we didn't have that feeling, even if everyone felt perfectly fine with just taking care of their
00:16responsibilities and living their life,
00:18we would still be plagued by the idea that that isn't enough.
00:22Because there are plenty of people out there who are successful, who have achieved great things, who have accomplished incredible
00:30feats and changed the world in some way.
00:33And we see that and we think, well, that person's life must have been fulfilling.
00:38And so we start to think that we need to be more like that.
00:41We need to do more with our life.
00:43We need to accomplish more.
00:45And that might be true.
00:46That person's life might have been more fulfilling than the average person's life.
00:50But that doesn't mean that they were happier.
00:53It doesn't mean that they had an objectively better life.
00:56It just means that they did something that was objectively impressive.
01:00The truth of the matter is that we do not actually know how that person felt when they were alive.
01:05We don't know if they were happy.
01:07We don't know if they felt fulfilled.
01:09All we know is that they did something impressive.
01:12And so we start to think that that's what we should do.
01:15We should try and be more impressive.
01:18But that's a really funny thing to think because most people will never know how impressive that person was.
01:24Most people will never know what that person accomplished.
01:27Most people will never know what they did.
01:30And yet we still want to do it.
01:31We want to do this thing that no one else is ever going to know about because we think it
01:35will make our life more fulfilling.
01:37Even though we don't even know if that person had a fulfilling life.
01:41You see how strange that is?
01:43We're trying to copy something that we don't even know exists.
01:46We're trying to copy something that no one else can even see.
