00:01EU countries have agreed to start the process to open another accession cluster with Ukraine
00:07and Moldova. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has said she is considering
00:14the possibility of playing a role in the upcoming French elections.
00:20Hope is quickly fading as authorities in Venezuela continue to search for survivors
00:25more than a week after two powerful quakes pummeled the coastal city of La Guerra.
00:34Ukraine and Moldova notched another milestone in their EU accession bids. EU countries unanimously agreed on Friday
00:41to advance the opening of another cluster of negotiations. Cluster 6 covers external relations,
00:47foreign policy and security, which is relatively less contentious than other policy areas. EU accession
00:54is divided into 35 negotiating chapters grouped into six clusters. The opening of cluster 6 reflects
01:02Hungary's gradual shift in position following Peter Magyar's election victory over Viktor Orban.
01:08Orban had kept Kiev's accession bid on hold for years over a dispute concerning the treatment of
01:14the Hungarian minority in western Ukraine. Magyar's new government worked with the Ukrainian side to
01:20resolve the issue, leading to the long-awaited opening of the first cluster in early June.
01:26The European Commission and Ukraine have pushed to open the remaining clusters before the summer break.
01:37Ireland is beginning its eighth rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union. Dublin will face
01:43numerous international challenges over the course of this six-month term, but it is perhaps the EU's budget that
01:50will require the greatest effort on Ireland's part.
01:55It is fair to say that Ireland has the work cut out for its six-month presidency of the EU
02:00Council. Trade, competitiveness, security and enlargement are among the top priorities.
02:06But no other priority is more urgent and more consequential than the next EU budget.
02:11T-Shock Michal Martin told us that negotiating a new budget means reconciling the irreconcilable, because there are so many
02:19red lines, so many demands that nobody wants to make any tangible concessions.
02:23Still, the goal is to have a final deal in December, and this will require very long hours of negotiations
02:31and a great deal of effort.
02:39The last shreds of hope are quickly fading as the search for any remaining survivors continues in Venezuela after powerful
02:47twin quakes rocked the country more than a week ago.
02:50Locating survivors has dramatically slowed after the passing of the critical 72-hour window for emergency response, but authorities are
02:59still able to make some miraculous rescues.
03:02The official death toll is more than 2,500, but rescue officials on the ground have reported higher figures, as
03:09tens of thousands remain missing.
03:12Though the government has not directly revealed how many are missing, an opposition website has logged over 38,000 cases,
03:20criticizing the government's response, which they say has been slow and haphazard.
03:25Facing intense criticism, Acting President Delcey Rodriguez pushed back against those claims, stressing that her cabinet have mobilized all available
03:34resources to respond to the crisis at hand as best they could.
03:38Rodriguez also pushed back against allegations that the government has been under-reporting deaths to avoid domestic blowback after it
03:46was reported that the United Nations will be providing 10,000 body bags to Caracas.
03:56Despite his remarks, which are at times scathing directed to his NATO allies, the U.S. President Donald Trump might
04:03not create too much rancor at next week's NATO summit in Ankara, a long-time U.S. diplomat has said.
04:09Kurt Volker, a former U.S. ambassador to NATO, who also served as the first Trump administration's special representative to
04:16Ukraine, told Neuronews' flagship program Europe Today he believes Trump won't want to embarrass the summit's host.
04:23Trump is always raging about something.
04:26And he's unhappy about European contributions, European defense spending, Iran, whatever it might be.
04:33But this is not going to be a blow-up of a NATO summit.
04:38Trump has lambasted his NATO allies in recent months over some governments' refusal to support the U.S. and Israel
04:44in their joint war with Iran, accusing them of abandoning their obligations to support the U.S. as part of
04:51the NATO alliance.
04:52The administration right now likes to say that Europe wasn't there for us, they weren't helping, they didn't let us
04:58use bases and airspace and things like that.
05:01That's a bit of an exaggeration.
05:03You had to ask, and then you could have used them.
05:07And we didn't tell anybody we were going to attack Iran, and then we complained that no one was attacking
05:12with us.
05:12Spain and Italy refused access to bases, and France denied Israel access to its airspace for flights carrying weapons for
05:20use in Iran.
05:21In May, Trump had a bitter public vote with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz after Mutz criticized the ill-conceived strategy
05:29behind the wall.
05:35Can European courts help the Spanish government's extraordinary regularization of undocumented migrants?
05:42That is the question raised by the Spanish Supreme Court as it considers whether to refer the matter to the
05:48Court of Justice of the European Union for a preliminary ruling.
05:52For now, it has not made that decision and has first asked the parties to submit their arguments.
05:59But how far can European courts really go?
06:01The European Commission has already given clear that these types of public policies depend on the member states.
06:12This is, that Spain has competencies to address these characteristics, even when it is massive, as is the case, and
06:26affects hundreds of thousands of people.
06:28This means that the prejudices that the Supreme Court has proposed to the European Union are unnecessary.
06:43The legal expert maintains that if there are doubts about how the regularization was approved, this pertains to Spanish law
06:50and not European law.
06:52Furthermore, the Court of Justice interprets EU law, but does not replace national courts.
06:57Meanwhile, the proceedings are already having an impact even before the Supreme Court decides whether to refer the matter for
07:04a preliminary ruling.
07:08For the Supreme Court of Justice of the European Union.
07:08For the Supreme Court, only to open this debate, which is a debate that is open, which is a debate
07:12that is open,
07:12which is not real, because the Superior Superior Court has not opened the process,
07:19but has asked the parties if they assume that they should open the process.
07:23And only the noise that that that has produced,
07:26is full of fear of 1.300.000 people who are about to achieve their roles in order for a
07:33regular situation in our country.
07:36If the CJEU were to find an incompatibility with European law,
07:41a future ruling could limit member states leeway to approve new regularization measures.
07:46For now, the proceedings remain in the hands of the Supreme Court.
07:54European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has said she is considering the possibility of playing a role in the upcoming
08:01French elections,
08:02which could lead her to leave her post early.
08:05Speaking to French newspaper Les Echos, Lagarde did not specify the role she has in mind,
08:11but insisted she is not currently planning to run as a candidate.
08:15She would instead prefer to contribute to and shape the electoral debate.
08:20Lagarde said she believes that a European voice needs to be heard in the French presidential debate,
08:26presenting it as a possible reason for her to leave her current post earlier than the scheduled date in October
08:332027.
08:34France is set to hold its next presidential election in April and May 2027,
08:40with more than 30 candidates having already expressed their interest in running.
08:49Interpol has issued a red notice for a Ukrainian woman over a bomb attack in Monaco earlier this week.
08:55The organization named 39-year-old Anastasia Berezovska as the main suspect in the bombing,
09:01which took place on Monday evening and left multiple people injured.
09:06Ukrainian business tycoon Vadimir Molaev was wounded in the attack,
09:10while his partner was critically injured and two others sustained moderate wounds.
09:15A red notice requests law enforcement around the world to locate and provisionally arrest an individual,
09:21but is not an international arrest warrant.
09:25A prosecutor told reporters that the suspect was sitting on a bench in Place de Moulin
09:29before placing an explosive device outside the building in which the victims were staying,
09:34which was triggered via remote control upon confirming the targets were present.
09:40Investigators later identified a car with German plates believed to have been used by the suspect,
09:45who prosecutors say disguised herself as a man to carry out the attack.
09:49The prosecutor added that the car was traced through Monaco, France and into Italy.
09:59After six weeks of training in Lithuania,
10:01the German Army's Freedom Shield exercise has come to an end.
10:05But before the soldiers head home,
10:07Lithuanian student Camila gets to enjoy one final highlight.
10:12A ride in a tank across the training ground.
10:15Camila is here after winning a Lithuanian Ministry of Defence SA competition on NATO and hybrid threats.
10:39Camila climbs inside the Puma tank, but our camera has to stay outside.
10:44The vehicle's interior contains sensitive details that could be of interest to potential adversaries
10:49from the German armed forces.
10:51Back outside, she shares her impressions of the Puma.
11:15This year marked the eighth edition of the SA competition, with a record 400 entries.
11:20Security in the Baltic States is clearly on the students' minds,
11:24and even if you don't win the prize, you can still book a tank ride in Lithuania yourself.
