00:00The EU and the UK announced coordinated sanctions against Russia over cyber attacks across Europe
00:05while Russia's ambassadors to Germany and France are being summoned in protest.
00:10European Commission President has called for stronger protections for children online,
00:15supporting introducing a minimum age for access to social media.
00:21New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known for his roles in the Jurassic Park movies and the piano, has died
00:27878.
00:30The European Union and the UK announced coordinated sanctions against Russia on Monday for carrying out cyber attacks.
00:36The latest sanctions are the result of targeting Poland's energy grid
00:40and orchestrating a wider campaign across Europe stretching back years.
00:44On the same day, Germany had summoned Russia's ambassador in protest and France will follow suit.
00:50We will convict the Russian ambassador in France in the next days,
00:54but we will also take sanctions against 9 individuals and 4 entities responsible for this cyber campaign
01:02which has been orchestrated by the FSB, the Bureau of Security, the Service of Security Fédéral of Russia.
01:09The joint measures are targeting individuals and organizations linked to Russia's security services
01:14as Britain added 24 new names, calling the attempts increasingly reckless
01:18and aimed at sowing chaos and division across Europe.
01:22The EU said that the attacks spanned countries including Cyprus, the Netherlands, Austria, Slovakia, Romania and Finland.
01:31Attributed to the FSB's Centre 16 Intelligence Unit,
01:35the December 2025 attack on the Polish electricity grid
01:38failed but could have caused 500,000 citizens to lose electricity in the depths of winter,
01:44the Foreign Office in London said.
01:45The Foreign Office also added that Russia is using cybercriminal networks to do its dirty work.
01:51A claim that Moscow denies.
01:58European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for stronger protections for children online,
02:04saying the evidence presented on Monday by the Special Panel on Child Safety Online
02:09should help shape future European policy.
02:12Von der Leyen said the evidence increasingly supported introducing a minimum age for access to social media
02:18and suggested a phased approach for different age groups.
02:22She said the argument to ban toddlers from screens and digital platforms
02:26and that children under 13 should only be allowed to use social media under adult supervision
02:32was the most convincing.
02:34Social media is not a toy, von der Leyen stressed.
02:37The status quo, a world where we continue to allow big tech, unrestricted access to our children
02:45will only consign another generation to more mental harm, addiction and misery.
02:52According to data from the research, young people spent between four and six hours a day on screens
02:58while almost 60% of young children have experienced emotional or psychosocial problems online.
03:05Von der Leyen also argued that technology companies, rather than parents or children,
03:11should bear responsibility for making online platforms safe
03:14as they have a duty of care to their users.
03:17The report identified services that contain age-inappropriate features such as infinite scrolling, autoplay
03:24and persistent notifications, describing them as Social Media Plus.
03:30Auf der Basis der vorliegenden Evidenz empfehlen wir deshalb die EU-weite harmonisierte Einführung
03:37einer Zugangsbeschränkung zu Social Media Plus für Kinder unter 13 Jahren.
03:43The Commission will review the panel's recommendations before presenting legislative proposals after the summer.
03:55The U.S. military launched a new wave of strikes across Iran overnight on Monday,
04:01as a fresh flare-up of hostilities continues to undermine an interim agreement between Washington and Tehran
04:07aimed at ending their war.
04:08The latest salvo by U.S. forces began on Sunday night, Central Command said on X,
04:15adding that dozens of targets were hit, including Iranian military air defense systems,
04:20coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats.
04:24Iranian state media reported U.S. strikes targeting large areas across southern and western Iran,
04:30as well as the islands of Keshem and Farur in the Gulf.
04:33It reported that one person was killed and four were wounded in the latest attacks.
04:39Iran retaliated with fresh strikes on Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan, state media added.
04:45On Sunday, Kuwait said three of its land border posts in the north were damaged,
04:50while air raid sirens sounded in Bahrain into Monday morning.
04:53The renewed fighting followed an Iranian attack early on Sunday on a commercial ship in the Strait of Hormuz,
05:00after which Iran's Revolutionary Guards announced it would again be closing the vital waterway
05:04that has been at the center of the latest flare-up.
05:10Firefighters were rushing to contain a fire that erupted in the sprawling Fontainebleau forest
05:16just south of Paris on Sunday.
05:18Early on Monday, officials partially closed the A6 highway, France's main north-south artery,
05:25after firefighting aircraft had been forced to suspend their operations with nightfall.
05:29The fire, which started on Sunday afternoon, has already burned 800 hectares and is still spreading.
05:35Around 15 homes had been evacuated in the nearby village of Vaudoué and firefighters were defending several other towns in
05:43the area.
06:18Two firefighting planes alongside 400 firefighters were deployed to contain the flames,
06:24which erupted just ahead of the 14th July national holiday
06:27and on the first major weekend for departures for the summer holiday season.
06:35The death toll from the devastating twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela almost 20 days ago
06:41rose to nearly 4,500 on Sunday.
06:44The government reported more than 19,500 people were living in camps due to the destruction.
06:50At the end of June, two earthquakes with a magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck Caracas
06:56in the coastal state of La Guayra.
06:58The quakes destroyed or completely flattened entire high-rise apartment buildings,
07:03leaving many displaced and without a home.
07:08The government said it would start providing some apartments to families in the coming days
07:12that were under construction before the quake,
07:15but said that significant resources will be needed to build more
07:18and provide rental and property assistance.
07:22Meanwhile, many Venezuelans continue to search for relatives buried under the rubble.
07:27While more and more machinery has become available to help the search and rescue efforts,
07:31many argue that there is still insufficient government assistance for families searching for bodies.
07:41As wars and trade tensions reshape global markets,
07:44Europe's food security is once again under pressure.
07:48The conflict involving Iran has sent fertilizer prices climbing,
07:52raising fresh concerns for farmers and consumers alike.
07:55It is against this backdrop that the EU agriculture ministers are meeting in Brussels on Monday.
08:01Speaking to your news programme Europe Today,
08:04the Irish minister said that the sector is concerned, but that it has a role to play.
08:09Food security and those vulnerabilities in Europe are to the forefront of everybody's mind now
08:14in terms of where we get our core ingredients from.
08:17So in terms of the Irish presidency of the EU for the next six months,
08:21we have three overarching priorities of competitiveness, values and security.
08:26And from my perspective, chairing the Agri-Fish Council for the next six months,
08:31security and food security and the contribution of our farmers and our fishermen and women all over Europe
08:37is not in conflict with other elements of the security debate, but is an integral part of it.
08:42Ministers are to decide on the European Commission's Fertilizer Action Plan for Hayden.
08:48This is a decisive and swift action to support farmers with these significant input costs
08:53and recognising the pressures there are on food production from these price shocks.
09:04New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known for his roles in the Jurassic Park movies and the piano,
09:10has died aged 78.
09:12In 2023, the actor revealed he had been diagnosed with an aggressive type of blood cancer.
09:18In April of this year, however, he said he was cancer-free after undergoing immunotherapy treatment.
09:24Neill's family wrote in a statement that the loss was sudden and unexpected
09:27and clarified that cancer was not the cause of his passing.
09:32Neill was a national treasure for the country.
09:34New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon described him as one of the greats.
09:38The New Zealand actor was also regarded as an honorary Australian by many due to his connections to the country.
09:46Neill gained international fame for his role as Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park.
09:51He also starred in The Piano, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme d'Or,
09:56before earning other awards, including three Academy Awards.
10:28Well, I think it's an investment.
10:31It's very strong to buy the stamps, and so I think being with many people who have the same purpose,
10:39I think reduces the economic part, also proposes to spend a time in family,
10:46and above all, to be able to fill the album, which is the main thing.
11:05It's a success, it's something that breaks records, and that's part of that, it's something special.
11:19Well, if it's full, if it's full, if it's full, if it's full, it's very apart,
11:29it's very important to enjoy the convivencia, enjoy the activities and the environment.
