01:15putting them on the top step of the podium.
01:17It would leave Alicia Palmowski in the lead of the championship
01:20by some 25 points ahead of Emma Felbermayer.
01:24With Megan Bruce having a fantastic weekend,
01:27two podiums brings the Tag Heuer driver up to third in the championship
01:31coming into her home race.
01:33And this is where the home race will be,
01:36the home of British motorsports, Silverstone,
01:38one of the longest challenges on the calendar for the drivers.
01:42And this, for many of them,
01:44will be the very first time they take this circuit on.
01:48No doubt the British fans will be out in force
01:51to cheer the likes of Alicia Palmowski,
01:53championship leader, Megan Bruce.
01:56We've also got Ella Lloyd and Ella Stephens out there
01:59racing for the first time as well.
02:01A busy schedule ahead this weekend,
02:04particularly today, eight sessions in total.
02:07And first out to hit the track
02:08is the F1 Academy practice.
02:10Here today, myself, Chris McCarthy,
02:12and alongside someone who knows all about winning,
02:15taking pole position at Silverstone, Abby Eaton.
02:19Abby, welcome to the F1 Academy commentary box.
02:22What a weekend in store for these drivers.
02:24Yeah, thank you very much for having me.
02:26And good to see some nice, dry, sunny conditions
02:29here at Silverstone.
02:30And as you mentioned,
02:32the first time F1 Academy is going to be racing at Silverstone.
02:36A lot of British drivers on the grid.
02:38We're riding on board with Alicia Palmowski at the moment.
02:41And they're going to have an absolutely fantastic time
02:43with the support from the crowd.
02:45You know what it's like racing in front of this crowd
02:48on a British Grand Prix weekend.
02:50Tell us what not just the British drivers are in store for,
02:53but all the drivers in general,
02:54because British Grand Prix is known as one of the Grand Prix
02:59that really stands out in terms of the attendance and support.
03:02You get across not just F1, but all the categories.
03:04Yeah, it's a fantastic kind of festival atmosphere, really.
03:08And, you know, British fans are really, really passionate
03:10about motorsport, and especially Formula 1.
03:13And I know with the years of F1 Academy running,
03:17you know, the support just grows and grows
03:19for these young drivers.
03:20And there's a lot of kind of hunger, really,
03:22to see a female in F1.
03:24And ultimately, these drivers are going to be
03:27at the bottom of their kind of career ladder,
03:29making their way up, hopefully, to Formula 1 in the end.
03:32Absolutely that.
03:33They've got a really big weekend in store,
03:36and so does this driver here.
03:38Chiara Batik is going to be the wildcard entry
03:41for this weekend.
03:42If you're unaware of that, then F1 Academy
03:44does bring a wildcard entry into each round.
03:49Chiara Batik will be supported by Weller Professionals
03:53racing for high-tech.
03:54She's a Red Bull Junior driver
03:56and has been racing in the British F4 Championship
03:59with high-tech this season.
04:01So this, you could argue, is a bit of an audition
04:03for her going into 2027.
04:05Not a good start for Esme Kosterman for LEGO Racing.
04:09Seems to have come to a stop over at the support race pit lane,
04:13but now gets going again.
04:16Someone who's had a little bit of difficulty this season,
04:18but seems to have got back going there.
04:21So a bit of a glitch, maybe, for Esme Kosterman.
04:24Yeah, and ultimately, it's her rookie season this year
04:27with Kosterman.
04:27So there's going to be a lot of learning going on,
04:30and sometimes, especially when the cars potentially
04:33throw a few wobblers here and there,
04:35it can be a lot of mental capacity
04:38to be able to deal with sorting out those situations.
04:40And this year's going to be a massive learning year
04:43for all of our rookies on the grid,
04:44and their first race at Silverstone
04:48is going to be an exciting one for all of them, I'm sure.
04:51Absolutely that.
04:52You can see Rachel Robertson in the pit lane.
04:55Now, the drivers had an in-season test here, Abby,
04:58back in April.
05:00Two days of in-season testing.
05:03Do you think that's going to change their approach
05:05to this weekend, or what do you think
05:07are the main things they would have been going through
05:09on that in-season test?
05:11Well, for a lot of them,
05:12it would have been their first time actually at the circuit.
05:15And as you mentioned with Kiara Batik,
05:17she's actually racing in British F4 this year as well,
05:19so she has also been on the circuit.
05:22But in the in-season testing,
05:24we had kind of star performances really
05:27from Ella Lloyd, Alicia Pomofsky, Lisa Billard also,
05:30and Peyton Westcott has also proved
05:33to be fairly quick during the season testing as well.
05:36Now, they'll come into this round
05:38looking at the previous data.
05:39They'll be looking at potentially their weaknesses
05:41that they potentially found on that test day,
05:44looking at their strengths as well,
05:45and trying to build on that
05:47and ultimately trying to bring it home on the top set.
05:50And you mentioned Kiara Batik,
05:51you took a podium round here as well
05:53on the Silverstone Grand Prix layout.
05:55On board with Ella Lloyd,
05:57and this is our first for a look at an on-board.
05:59What's it like driving around this circuit, I think?
06:01Oh, it's fantastic.
06:02You know, everyone loves Silverstone.
06:04I don't think I've heard a driver not love it.
06:06It's, you know, it's one of those historic F1 tracks
06:08that everyone wants to go and drive,
06:10and particularly the Maggots-Becketts complex.
06:13You know, it's a really fast, high-speed,
06:15quick succession of quite technical corners,
06:18and it's quite challenging for the drivers
06:20to get stuck into.
06:22And the last corner of that kind of...
06:27The last corner of the sequence there
06:30is the chapel that leads you on to the long straight,
06:34so it's super, super important.
06:35As we see Jess Hawkins there in the screen,
06:39she's running the F1 Academy team for Aston Martin,
06:41and she's the ambassador for the F1 team as well.
06:45Yeah, Matilda Pats had a great run-out last time,
06:49putting Aston Martin on the top step of the podium
06:51for the first time,
06:52and right on cue, there is Matilda Pats now.
06:56Let's talk about the championship a little bit, Abi,
06:59and remind ourselves of exactly where we are.
07:01So this is round three now.
07:04After this, we go to Zandvoort, Cota, Vegas as well.
07:07We've got a three-race system coming back in for Cota.
07:09Back to your two-race system this time,
07:12where we have a reverse grid and a feature race.
07:14Alicia Palmowski starting to get a bit of a head start
07:17in the championship now.
07:1825 points clear from Emma Felbermaier.
07:20Then Megan Bruce has leapfrogged up to third.
07:23Peyton Westcott fourth.
07:24Matilda Pats fit.
07:25One of the drivers here who could do with a good weekend
07:28is Alba Larsson, isn't it?
07:30Ninth place in the championship.
07:32I'd be a bit disappointed with that.
07:34Yeah, you know, it's one of those things
07:36where you really want to get off the line
07:38really, really nice and early.
07:40And ultimately, this is the midpoint of the season here.
07:42So this is where drivers are going to, you know,
07:44get more comfortable with their cars.
07:46We see Ella Lloyd there, purple sector for sector one,
07:49really pushing on through the session.
07:53And, yeah, you know, it's early days in the championship,
07:57but those drivers that are really key
07:58to try and get the championship title
08:00are going to be really getting stuck in
08:02from this point onwards.
08:03You talked about Maggots and Beckets.
08:05Why don't you talk us through it with Ella Lloyd?
08:07Sure.
08:07So we see going through little snap of oversteer
08:10through Copse as we pull forward
08:12towards that famous Maggots-Beckets complex.
08:15It's going to be flat out, full power,
08:17little nibble of curve again on the right,
08:19fighting the car, little snap of oversteer.
08:22Really make sure we get good track position
08:24for that chapel corner onto the long hangar straight.
08:28So it looks like she's fighting the car a little bit there.
08:31Yeah, first session out.
08:33And then now you've got a long time
08:34to think about the next section coming up down at Stone.
08:37Yeah, you can read a book at this point here.
08:39So obviously first session out this morning.
08:41So the track is going to be a little bit green,
08:43unlike some of the other circuits
08:45that the drivers go to that aren't used
08:47other than in Formula One.
08:48This circuit's used all the time.
08:50So it is nice and clean,
08:52but it's a case of putting some rubber down
08:53and getting the track rubbing in.
08:55Yeah, and then through this final corner
08:57where no doubt there could be some overtaking.
09:00And this is where I'm sure you'll know
09:02where you're on a good lap
09:03and possibly challenging for pole position
09:05as across the line goes Ella Lloyd.
09:07We had a glimpse of the Lando stand as well.
09:09No doubt they are all going to be out
09:12supporting the likes of Ella Lloyd
09:13and the other British drivers.
09:16Yeah, the Lando stand's impressive, isn't it?
09:17It is.
09:18I've been watching it be built actually
09:19throughout the last few months, yeah.
09:21So I work at Silverstone a lot
09:23and each time I come in
09:24there's another set of seats,
09:26another set of seats.
09:27I'm thinking, how big is this thing going to get?
09:28So I think it's about 14,000 seats in there.
09:31So yeah, they've got a fantastic view
09:33of our F1 Academy drivers.
09:35It's like seeing a football stand, isn't it?
09:36Just a load of the same colour
09:39wiping out a whole stand
09:41and the atmosphere around the circuit
09:44this weekend is going to be superb.
09:47Here we see Alpines, Nina Gaiman
09:49on the podium at the very first round.
09:54We'll be looking to try
09:55and get back there once again.
09:57Talk us through the drivers
09:59at this point, Abi.
10:00I know you've worked with drivers quite a lot.
10:03These are, for the drivers,
10:05some of them just coming fresh out of karting.
10:07This is their first time racing in single-seaters.
10:10So throughout the season,
10:12they really are learning a lot, I'm sure, aren't they?
10:15What's going to be going through them
10:16throughout a season like this?
10:18You know, for those,
10:19it's going to be their first year racing cars.
10:22You know, a lot of them have done karting previously
10:24or they might have done some F4 testing and so on.
10:26But, you know, this is a really, really big stage
10:29to be learning on.
10:30And, you know, ultimately,
10:31these are proper rookie drivers.
10:33You know, some are only 16 years of age.
10:35So the learning curve they have is incredibly high.
10:38And ultimately, to do it on a stage like this,
10:41to do it with the Formula One weekend
10:42and the Formula One crowds,
10:43it's going to prepare them really, really well
10:45for whatever they decide to do moving forward.
10:48You know, we hope that they stick
10:49with the Formula One calendar
10:51and the Formula One package
10:52and make their way through into FIA, F3, F2 and so on.
10:55But, yeah, it's a fantastic stage for them to learn on.
10:58A bit of pressure to deal with as well,
11:00which is always a good thing.
11:01You know, pressure makes diamonds in the end.
11:03So, yeah, I think the girls
11:05are going to be loving the challenge.
11:06How is that as well, racing on an F1 weekend?
11:09A lot of these drivers will still go into
11:11the big paddocks racing in things
11:13like GB3 or Formula Regional.
11:15But the crowds you get at those
11:17do not compare to a Grand Prix weekend, I'm sure.
11:20And I'm sure the atmosphere
11:21must be absolutely incredible
11:23with so much attention on the drivers.
11:26Yeah, definitely.
11:26And it certainly does take you back
11:28when you first walk into, you know,
11:30an F1 weekend
11:31and specifically around such as Silverstone
11:33and, you know,
11:34where the fans are so passionate
11:36that actually, you know,
11:38you have to almost realise
11:40that these drivers,
11:42or the fans, sorry, the supporters,
11:44especially at home track
11:45for our brick drivers, for example,
11:47they can really help you find that extra gear.
11:50You know, they'll help you find
11:51the extra few tents
11:52because you want to impress
11:54the fans that have turned out.
11:55As we all know,
11:56sometimes Silverstone can provide
11:58some interesting weather
11:59and our British fans
12:00are always out in force
12:01and, yeah,
12:02dealing with whatever
12:03weather gets thrown at them.
12:04I might be corrected on this,
12:05but I think 2021
12:06was our last actual dry weekend.
12:09But other than that,
12:10there have been wet races.
12:11We saw Esme Kosterman
12:12for Lego Racing there.
12:14They've got a big weekend ahead.
12:15Lego, I mean,
12:16I think that's been
12:17one of the biggest announcements, right?
12:19Yeah.
12:19Lego go-karts going round.
12:20Yeah, it's fantastic.
12:21They look great as well.
12:22They look awesome.
12:23Yeah, it's going to be
12:24absolutely superb.
12:25What do you know?
12:26No doubt the drivers
12:27will want to stick around
12:28and have a look at those.
12:29Audi,
12:30we can see
12:31Emma Felbermeyer
12:32having a great season.
12:33They've got Freddie Slater
12:35competing for the
12:36Formula 3 Championship.
12:37Emma Felbermeyer
12:38from a real racing family
12:40having a good season so far
12:42right in the championship
12:44battle as well.
12:45I'm sure Audi
12:46will be very pleased
12:46with what they're seeing
12:47from Emma Felbermeyer.
12:49Yeah,
12:49and she's only 25 points
12:51behind Alicia,
12:52so she'll be keen
12:53to get some good results
12:54this weekend
12:55and try and close the gap
12:57really on Alicia,
12:59but she's definitely
12:59still in the fight.

13:02I think drivers
13:03taking their time
13:04a little bit here
13:05due to that in-season test.
13:06We've got a yellow flag
13:07out somewhere
13:08in the opening section
13:10of the circuit,
13:11I believe.
13:12That's now quickly
13:13come back in.
13:14While we are in practice
13:15and the drivers
13:16are warming up,
13:16let's talk about
13:17some of the success
13:19that F1 Academy
13:20has produced,
13:21particularly this year.
13:22Dorian Pan
13:23going out with Mercedes
13:25and what a day
13:26that was for her.
13:27And Abby Pulling
13:28has been winning
13:28in GV3 as well.
13:30I mean,
13:31the graduates
13:32from F1 Academy
13:33are really starting
13:34to show the success
13:35of this championship
13:36already.
13:37Yeah,
13:37and it really does
13:38highlight that
13:39F1 Academy
13:40is working.
13:41As you see,
13:43Emma Felbermeyer
13:44is actually up
13:44into P1.
13:47I believe actually
13:48the spin on track
13:50to cause the yellow flag
13:52was Lisa Billard.
13:53Yeah,
13:53just lost it
13:54going through turn one
13:55in Abby there.
13:56So,
13:57rear tyres just looked
13:58like they didn't want
13:59to play ball.
14:00I had a little bit
14:00of a double turn
14:01into the apex
14:02and thankfully
14:04got away unscathed there.

14:32in front of the home crowd
14:33this weekend.
14:38I'm really looking forward
14:39to Silverstone.
14:40I think every British driver
14:41really looks forward
14:42to this race of the year.
14:44Obviously,
14:44my first time
14:45at the British Grand Prix
14:47itself and also racing here.
14:48So,
14:49it's very exciting
14:50to just see the atmosphere.
14:51My focus is just
14:53to make sure
14:53I'm still improving
14:54from every round.
14:55I think
14:55I made a step in Canada.
14:57I'm hoping to make
14:58another step
14:58for this weekend.

15:02has a big weekend,
15:03doesn't she?
15:04Was racing
15:04in the British
15:05Karting Championships
15:06last year
15:07and now racing
15:10at the British Grand Prix.
15:12Yeah,
15:12a bit of a step up,
15:13The transformation.
15:14Exactly, yeah.
15:14I mean,
15:15she really impressed
15:16at the rookie test
15:17at the start of the year here,
15:18which is ultimately
15:19what's kind of given her
15:20a seat this year.
15:21And as you say,
15:22you know,
15:22it really is a big learning curve
15:24for her this year,
15:25but actually,
15:25her performances
15:26in terms of speed
15:27have actually been
15:28pretty decent.
15:29And yes,
15:30there's been a few issues
15:31here and there,
15:31but that's natural
15:32with her first year in cars.
15:34She's ultimately
15:35one of the kind of
15:36most inexperienced,
15:37really,
15:37in cars.
15:38So, yeah,
15:39doing a good job
15:40for the moment.
15:41Third fastest so far
15:42in this session
15:43as she comes to complete the line
15:44and, yeah,
15:45stays third fastest.

16:24she'll know exactly

16:25that she wants
16:26to try and tackle
16:26when she goes
16:27on the circuit.
16:27So they've probably
16:28got a plan in place
16:29and, yeah,
16:30maybe just waiting
16:31for some of the other girls
16:32to put some rubber
16:33down for her first
16:34and then she'll come out
16:35in a moment.

16:58The growth in young females

17:03really has grown
17:04over the last few years,
17:05hasn't it?
17:06How have you seen it,

17:08from the outside
17:09looking in towards karting?
17:11Do you think there's now
17:11much more drivers
17:13who are looking
17:14to try and get
17:15on this F1 Academy grid?
17:17Many who will come here
17:18this weekend
17:19and then want to jump
17:20in a go-kart
17:21come Monday.
17:21Yeah, definitely.
17:22And do you know,
17:23it's not even just drivers,
17:24it's those girls
17:25that are interested
17:25in the engineering side
17:27of it,
17:27the strategist side
17:28and it's really,
17:29really warming to see.
17:30I mean,
17:30I've been racing
17:31for 24 years
17:32so 24 years ago
17:33I think I could count
17:34on one hand
17:34probably the other females
17:35that I would kart against,
17:37Alice Powell being one of them,
17:38the other commentators
17:39you usually have.
17:40And, you know,
17:41now when you go to
17:42specifically the grassroots level
17:45there's a lot more females
17:46coming up through
17:47into karting
17:48and that's going to
17:48transition up
17:49as we see
17:52Stephens there
17:52have a lock-up
17:54Yeah, that's going to
17:55transition up
17:56into the various championships
17:57and ultimately
17:58having these kind of
17:59spearhead championships
18:01like F1 Academy
18:02is going to help
18:03to motivate
18:04and inspire
18:05the younger generation
18:05to get into motorsport
18:07in various different aspects.
18:09Yeah, there is
18:10so many opportunities
18:11being provided
18:12by the championship
18:13and its success
18:15really has been proven
18:17and of course
18:17you have the
18:18Netflix documentary
18:19series as well
18:20which would have been
18:21a huge influence
18:23to many
18:23watching on
18:24as well.
18:25Providing little superstars
18:26now, aren't they?
18:27Yeah, absolutely.
18:28I suppose
18:28F1 Academy
18:30is a great chance
18:31for them
18:31to build themselves
18:32as drivers
18:33but also
18:34build a following
18:36within the sport
18:36as well
18:37which I'm sure
18:37can be a big help
18:38going forward
18:39for them
18:39in terms of
18:40gaining sponsors
18:41and things like that.
18:42Yeah, definitely.
18:43If you can add value
18:44to yourself
18:44as a driver
18:45not just with
18:46your performance
18:46on the track
18:47but everything
18:48you bring to a sponsor
18:49bring to a team
18:50off the circuit
18:50it's going to make
18:51you more valuable
18:52and ultimately
18:52that's going to result
18:53in better drives
18:54and better opportunities
18:55so there's a lot
18:57of drivers now
18:58that will be having
18:58the support
18:59from managers
19:00from agents
19:01to kind of
19:02direct them
19:03in the way
19:04of making sure
19:05they're maximising
19:05their potential
19:06off track as well.

43:24quick as you

43:25traction and

43:27defend your

43:29that you've got
43:29the good track

43:32ultimately the
43:32loop onto the

43:34because you've
43:34got those two
43:35flat out corners
43:36as well is it
43:36a start where
43:38you can be
43:38punished for
43:39for a bad
43:40launch
43:40yeah definitely
43:41you'll get eaten
43:42up and you
43:43know you have
43:44then got the
43:44opportunity to
43:45potentially kind
43:47of get your
43:47positions back
43:48into village if
43:49you're brave and
43:49you want to go
43:50around the
43:50outside but
43:51ultimately we've
43:52seen it not
43:53particularly go
43:54well trying to
43:54do that on a
43:55race start but
43:56yeah two flat
43:57out corners into
43:58two particularly
43:59tight corners and
44:01people can end up
44:01tripping over each
44:02other somewhat on
44:04the race start and
44:05for new drivers on
44:07the grid it could
44:08provide a bit of
44:09a challenge
