01:06There were problems for Tuka Tapanen,
01:08meaning he did not be able to complete the full session.
01:11But Freddy Slater pleased the British fans around the circuit.
01:15Going quickest in practice with a 146.161 ahead of an ever-improving
01:21Ernesto Rivera, sprint race winner last time out at Red Bull Ring.
01:26And Matteo DiPaolo, Trident driver, yet to be in the points this weekend.
01:31But that can all change over the course of this weekend.
01:36Welcome, everyone, to Formula 3 qualifying.
01:3830 of the brightest young talents in motorsport.
01:43Getting ready to go out there and set the grid for both the sprint race
01:47and the feature race for the sprint race.
01:49We reverse the top 12.
01:51And Freddy Slater, this is one he would have had marked on his calendar,
01:55flying the flag for the fans around the circuit.
01:58My name, Chris McCarthy, a man who knows all about driving around this circuit.
02:01Piers Pryor alongside.
02:03This is going to be one of the most fun sessions of the year
02:05for all of these young drivers.
02:07Silverstone Grand Prix circuit is an absolutely perfect pairing
02:11for a Dallara Formula 3 car.
02:13And on a perfect day, circuit conditions pretty much optimal.
02:1624 degrees track term, 43 degrees air term.
02:19Actually, coincidentally, very, very similar
02:22to what we saw last year in qualifying.
02:24At the poll last year, Nikola Solov for Kampos,
02:26who is now in the fight for the Formula 2 championship.
02:281.45.04, I expect it to be around about that mark.
02:3345.0, maybe nudging a 44 if someone can nail a lap time.
02:38My pick would be one of the Kampos or potentially one of the Tridents,
02:41although you never know with the form of like Hiyu Yamakoshi,
02:44as we've seen, maybe one of the ARTs.
02:46MP have been quick round here previously as well.
02:49Who knows?
02:51Exactly that.
02:53We've had two pole sitters so far this season.
02:55And Teo Pio now taking a hat-trick, which equaled the record
02:59for the most consecutive podiums.
03:01And then Hiyu Yamakoshi taking the pole last time.
03:04Tuka Tafanen, a little bit down on track time,
03:07but one of the returning drivers, which I think will be a help for him.
03:10Yeah, we saw in that build-up, all the highlights from practice,
03:14the smoky end as a battery decided it didn't want to be a battery anymore
03:18on Tuka Tafanen's car.
03:19But the drivers all just getting their tyres into the window,
03:24their temperature window to operate best.
03:25Hard Pirelli tyre this weekend, the white sidewall.
03:28We were on the soft last weekend in Austria.
03:31The front left takes a pretty big beating around here.
03:35So many long, high-speed, high-G, high-energy corners
03:39that the Pirelli tyre has to deal with.
03:41We're expecting, because it's a long lap as well, 5.8 kilometres,
03:44one flying lap per new set of tyres.
03:47And we expect to see three runs for one for each of the brand-new sets
03:52that each of these drivers have available
03:53if everything goes to plan in this qualifying session.
03:56Noah Stromstad took his first win in a feature race last weekend,
04:01elevating himself up to P6 in the Championship.
04:03Hugo Ugachuku currently leads 16 points clear of Freddy Slater.
04:08Teofil Nall, no points for him last time out,
04:10but sits 26 back.
04:13And then we have Bruno Del Pino, a further three points back.
04:16Brando Badouer, not in the points last time,
04:19but still up there on 41 points, tied with Noah Stromstad.
04:25Two points you get for taking pole position.
04:28So already some points up for grabs today for the drivers.
04:32Just going through the warm-up process, it seems, fears.
04:35And some of the teams tried, and in particular,
04:37waited a little bit late there to go out onto circuit.
04:41Yeah, we were discussing in practice this morning, Chris, weren't we?
04:44We've seen at Austria, both in F3 and Formula 2,
04:49the pole was taken by a driver who was out of sequence with everyone else.
04:53They went a bit earlier on that final run.
04:56Trident trying to just offset themselves, give themselves a bit of free air.
04:59This is not really a circuit that rewards having a tow
05:01because there's so many long, high-speed corners.
05:04The amount you gain from reducing your drag in a straight line
05:07is not as much as you would lose through turbulent air
05:10and lack of grip from the reduced downforce of the turbulent air over your wings.
05:15So drivers will be looking for space on the circuit.
05:18It's the second longest, I believe, lap that we have
05:20around the Formula 3 season behind Spa,
05:23if my maths is correct in my head.
05:25So therefore, there should be plenty of space,
05:27but we did already see in practice a bit of jostling for position
05:31down towards the Vail chequenne.
05:32Although the race director's notes and the race director's briefing,
05:34Simon Garano-Pragasen, who's the race director for Formula 3,
05:37did say that drivers must be at racing speed
05:40if they're on the racing line into Stowe and through Vail and Club.
05:45So if anyone's slow and on the racing line there,
05:47they may well be getting a look in from the stewards.
05:49Yeah, and impeding is something that does come with a grid drop for both riders.
05:54We saw Alessandro Giusti, didn't he, got it last time out.
05:58Yeah, that was in Austria.
05:59He got, is it three or five places?
06:00Three places.
06:01Yeah, for both races, which is not ideal in the slightest.
06:05Travers will be looking for clear air.
06:07I mentioned Campos' favourites in my mind for pole position.
06:11I'm not just a Campos stan, you know, I do have, I bring receipts, Chris.
06:15Last year, pole, Solov, fastest lap,
06:18and they won both races as well with Mary Boyer as well.
06:22He didn't win both races, but they've got pole and won both races,
06:25and they looked very strong.
06:27And it's the way they went about pole last year as well,
06:30and this iteration of car, which is new for the 2025 season.
06:33Solov seems like he was just on a Sunday drive, well, Saturday drive,
06:38Friday five, and went faster than anyone else.
06:41So it looks like we're starting our fast-flying laps, Chris,
06:45and it's important to get a good one on the board
06:46to bank and get yourself a good lap to start the session.
06:50Yeah, Jin Nakamura, first top 12 for him in qualifying last time,
06:53led to a first podium finish.
06:56So this is where they want to get a benchmark time on the board.
07:00Do not want to be a victim of getting track limit penalties either.
07:04Can't go four wheels over the white line.
07:06If they do that, their lap time will be deleted
07:08as we watch Jin Nakamura flying down the Wellington Strait

07:29both of which bleed lap time.

07:34And this is one of the corners that's going to be critical
07:36for drivers' lap times and also their session.
07:38We saw the car bottoming out,
07:40hitting the road and throwing a bit of smoke up from underneath.
07:42Run wide at Cox, which is the main area of track limits,
07:45and your lap time will be deleted
07:47whether you gain an advantage or not.
07:48As Nakamura flying his way through the World Famers Maggots
07:51and Beckett section.
07:52Looks pretty on it so far from Nakamura.
07:54Purple in the middle sector for now,
07:57but it's immediately beaten by McLaughlin.

08:52and we've had Formula 2

09:02The balance being how much front grip
09:04compared to how much rear grip they have,
09:06and we saw a lot of oversteer
09:07from both our Formula 3 and Formula 2 drivers this morning.
09:09That will have sort of gone away a little bit
09:11as the track grips up.
09:12Generally, you get a bit more rear grip.

09:17now a race winner in Formula 3,
09:19making his way on to the Hamilton Straight.

09:24and on to the straight he goes.

09:36but Freddy Slater is absolutely flying,

09:42Unfortunately, got disqualified from practice,
09:44but the team will have got over
09:45whatever technical issues caused
09:46that disqualification,
09:47but he was quick,
09:48looking to take his first pole position
09:50as a rookie,
09:50second in the championship as we stand.
09:53The only driver in the top few
09:54that hasn't won a race yet,
09:57hasn't got a pole either yet,
09:58but I think it's only a matter of time

11:07You see, as soon as you hit the curve,
11:08the car jumps left,
11:09and then one wheel must be on
11:12or between the white lines of the circuit,
11:14and in that instance, it was not.

12:17the balance of the car
12:18and how it feels
12:18in the middle of the corner,
12:19the overall speed you have to carry,
12:21and then when you apply the power,
12:23how does the car react,
12:24and all of this,
12:25they can rehearse in their mind,
12:27but there's nothing quite like
12:28going out there
12:29and experiencing it.
12:30And the drivers will come in,
12:32they'll sit there
12:32as the teams change the tyres,
12:33and they'll be mentally
12:34and physically looking back
12:36and reflecting on what they've done
12:37in that first run.
12:38Where could I find time?
12:40What did I do well?
12:41Where did the car feel good?
12:42What do I need to do
12:43on the next run
12:44to find more lap time?
12:45Some of the teams
12:46will also be showing
12:46their drivers some data
12:49to say,
12:49look,
12:49your teammate was a bit quicker

12:51try approaching the corner
12:52slightly differently,
12:53you brake too early,
12:54or you brake too late,
12:54which hurt your exit,
12:55et cetera,

14:29being a rookie
14:29was quite good as well,

14:52The road in,
14:53it seems like this year
14:54hasn't quite had the out
14:55and out pace in qualifying,
14:56but they can race
14:57through the field very well
14:58and we'll see what happens.
14:59Of course,
14:59road in a UK-based team,
15:01so in theory,
15:02a home race for them as well.
15:04Will that play much
15:04of an advantage?
15:05Probably not,
15:06because most of these teams
15:07have raced here in,
15:08in fact,
15:08all the teams on the grid
15:09have raced here in this category,
15:10but also the other teams
15:11often race here
15:12in other categories as well
15:13and it's a well-known circuit,
15:15a circuit that has
15:15a lot of testing
15:16throughout the years
15:17and some of these teams
15:18and drivers will test
15:19at this circuit
15:20outside of the Formula 3 season
15:21in similar cars
15:22or either cars faster
15:23or slower than these as well,
15:25so the drivers mostly,
15:26even the ones
15:26that haven't raced here at all
15:28or a huge amount
15:29will have been here before as well
15:31and it is a favourite.
15:32I mentioned it ahead of the show,
15:33it's so high speed,
15:35so smooth as well.
15:36I said in practice
15:37and I still stand by it,
15:39but the first time
15:39I ever drove a single seater
15:40around this circuit,
15:41I was amazed
15:42at how smooth the circuit was
15:46and how high speed it was
15:48and the fact that
15:48there's only one or two
15:49big braking zones
15:50and even those slow corners
15:52aren't that slow,
15:52it doesn't ever feel like
15:53you stop the flow of circuit
15:55and it feels like
15:56as close to what I can imagine
15:57flying a plane
15:58feels like,
15:59which is really, really cool,
16:00so these drivers
16:02getting to experience that
16:02but it's one thing
16:03it feeling cool,
16:05another thing
16:05trying to do it
16:06absolutely on the limit
16:07of grip on every single corner
16:08to try and take
16:10hold positions,
16:10potentially,
16:12this man will be looking to do.
16:13and the crowd are out
16:15in full force
16:16even on a Friday practice
16:18and we'll always stick around
16:19and give huge support
16:20to all the Formula 3,

26:33a representative lap time in
26:35yet the queue will start
