00:00МУЗЫКАЛЬНАЯ ЗАСТАВКА
00:33Austria feature race proved to be an incredibly exciting encounter.
00:38Green flag waved at the back and we were off away and racing.
00:41Immediate drama taking out the likes of Yevon David at the first corner.
00:46We had Wukun Shin coming together with Fernando Barrichello down at turn four
00:51as the battle heated up at the front.
00:53Higey Yamakoshi desperately trying to hold on to pole positions,
00:56but through came the Campos drivers.
00:58Noah Stromstead eventually coming through to take his first win of the season,
01:04his second in Formula 3, and after a head-to-head battle
01:08that went all the way to the final lap,
01:10Ugo Ugochiku would just beat Freddie Slater to second place,
01:14with the British driver taking a fourth podium finish in as many rounds.
01:19That leads us on to round five, and we come to the home of British motorsport,
01:25to Silverstone, one where the fans are going to be out in full force.
01:30Welcome, everyone, to round five of the FIA Formula 3 Championship.
01:35We begin, as ever, with a 45-minute practice session.
01:38Before qualifying later, here to call you through the action.
01:41Once again, myself, Chris McCarthy, someone who's done many laps around here.
01:46Yeah, Silverstone Grand Prix circuit, one of the favourites for the drivers.
01:50They absolutely love it, and it's a circuit in which a high downforce,
01:54slicks and wings, single-seater like this really comes alive.
01:56The average speed over 200 kilometres an hour, 120 miles an hour for qualifying.
02:03We saw last year, I expect it to go just as fast.
02:05It's not faster than last year.
02:07Interesting weather looking ahead to this weekend.
02:10Unseasonably British is in, basically, it's looking good, Chris.
02:14Yes.
02:14It's going to be sort of early to mid-20s all weekend.
02:17The wind is stable.
02:19We're not going to have any torrential downpours like we saw in the feature race last year,
02:23which saw that race curtailed early.
02:26And it's basically ideal racing conditions.
02:29The slightly westerly breeze, let's know, five to ten miles an hour maximum,
02:33basically plays into the hands of all the drivers because pretty much all of the high-speed,
02:38high-loaded corners have a slight headwind, which makes the car feel a bit more stable.
02:42So this will be a very enjoyable weekend for the drivers,
02:44and just a touch cooler than we've had at the last two events as well.
02:48We won't get our hopes up, though.
02:50Last time, I think we had dry racing across F2 and F3 for a weekend here.
02:54It was 2021.
02:56So the weather always seems to play a part, particularly in these support races.
03:01A British man can dream.
03:02We can dream of a sunny weekend at Silverstone for the British Grand Prix,
03:06and it looks like it's going to be okay.
03:08That man there, I think it was Esther there, wasn't it?
03:11Yes.
03:11Yeah, he drives Campos.
03:13Campos are my tip for a good weekend this weekend.
03:17Last year, they took pole position and both race wins.
03:20So they're looking pretty good.
03:22And, of course, currently leading the team's championship,
03:24leading the driver's championship as well.
03:27So they're very much on form.
03:29They were second fast in the F1 Academy session,
03:31just gone as well with Elish Palmosky at the wheel.
03:35That car was looking pretty rotation-y.
03:37But I watched last year's qualifying as well,
03:39and Nikola Solov, who got pole on the end,
03:41it just looked so easy,
03:42considering how much of margin he had in hand as well.
03:45Absolutely.
03:45There's the driver's standings to your left,
03:47and as you said, Campos leading the way.
03:49Ugo Ugachukwu extending his advantage over Freddie Slater in the feature race.
03:53He had a bit of a mixed weekend at Red Bull Ring.
03:56Teofield Nile, no points for him.
03:58He had three pole positions in a row,
04:01then 24th, third place.
04:02He drops behind the top two who appear to be escaping.
04:05And then Bruno Del Pino is fourth place.
04:08Brando Badawer in P5.
04:11Let's talk Teofield Nile.
04:12Bit of a costly weekend for him, wasn't it?
04:15But he'll be looking to make the most of that Campos,
04:18get himself back in the championship fight.
04:19Yeah, costly weekend in terms of points.
04:21It just didn't get qualifying right,
04:23and it shows how much difference there is
04:25when you can get qualifying right,
04:26because you put yourself in such a good position.
04:28A driver that's been qualifying very well recently
04:30is that man there, Hiu Yamakoshi.
04:32Of course, he was fastest last time out, wasn't he?
04:35In Austria.
04:36He'll be looking out for him.
04:38But Nile didn't get it hooked up in qualifying.
04:41Difficult weekend, and basically didn't score.
04:44Two 15th places saw him drop further away
04:47from his teammate, Vugachuku, at the front of the field.
04:49But he'll be coming back with vengeance.
04:51And this circuit actually, because it's so long,
04:55it's 5.8 kilometers.
04:56You've got 18 corners as opposed to the shorter,
04:59you know, 10 corner or seven real corners.
05:02That we had at Austria.
05:04Each corner has equal value,
05:07because you still have to nail it on the qualifying lap.
05:09But because the lap is spread over such a bigger distance
05:11and so many more corners,
05:12the margins are slightly less fine.
05:15And this circuit is more about rhythm and flow
05:18than just absolutely being on the ragged edge
05:20in certain corners.
05:21Ricardo Escoto makes a return to the championship this weekend.
05:25He was recently out in Road America,
05:27continuing his Indy Next campaign,
05:30was with us at Barcelona.
05:31This filling the seat for Brad Benavidez,
05:34currently out with injury after his crash at Monaco.
05:38Salim Hanna jumped in to the car last weekend,
05:42but Ricardo Escoto back for a second appearance.
05:45Many drivers taking their time to come out onto the circuit.
05:49Noah Stromstedt, what a result that was for him.
05:51What a difference it made in the championship as well.
05:54He was down in around 13th place
05:57and has elevated himself up to P6 in the championship.
06:01So how much difference a feature race win can make
06:04in this series, Piers?
06:05Oh, massive difference.
06:07I mean, how many rounds are we now?
06:08It's six, wait, am I?
06:09Round five.
06:10Round five, so we've had eight races.
06:11Yes.
06:12Four features.
06:13And eight different winners.
06:14Yeah, exactly.
06:14It shows quite how close it is.
06:16But the reason we've had such a big change,
06:19you know, like Stromstedt jumping up certain places,
06:21as you mentioned, Chris, eight different race winners,
06:23which means at least four different feature race winners
06:25and 25 points.
06:26I mean, you look at Ugachuku,
06:28who's been quote-unquote dominant this season,
06:30but with 78 points, you know, 25 for a race win.
06:33If someone wins four times, they can get towards that.
06:36Well, they'll be eclipsing that, wouldn't they?
06:38That's basically just three race wins worth of points.
06:39So if you can have some consistently good weekends,
06:42I don't think anyone outside the top 10
06:43is realistically out of the championship.
06:45If someone goes on an absolute killer run of form,
06:48they could definitely jump themselves in.
06:50I think we're realistically looking at the top six,
06:53sort of Stromstedt, Pedro Claro, maybe outside shot,
06:56maybe Huyukki Amakos.
06:57Anyone else further down would need
06:58an absolutely magical end to the season.
07:01But yeah, keep an eye on those ones at the front.
07:02But a driver that could well switch it on
07:04is Tuca Tapanen, a driver that came into this season
07:07with disappointment from last year.
07:09We know his quality, but his experience around here
07:12and his pace as well, with MP as well,
07:14looking strong here as well last year.
07:15Could see a good weekend from him.
07:16They need a good weekend, don't they?
07:17The MP team yet to get on the podium this season,
07:20which comes as a surprise given the line-up
07:23they bring into this season.
07:26The likes of Tuca Tapanen, Alessandro Giusdi,
07:29also out for them as well.
07:31And Mathieu Kornagi, a Red Bull junior, highly rated.
07:34They'll be very disappointed not to have gone on the podium so far.
07:39But this, as you said, is a track that they have had good pace at.
07:42They'll be hoping to break through this weekend.
07:45Yeah, I mean, in qualifying last year, on the first run,
07:47the MPs were looking very strong.
07:48They had two or, I think, two of them inside the top ten.
07:50In the end, actually, they fell away.
07:52It was only Tramnitz who was up inside the top five,
07:54fifth place, four tenths off our pole sitter, Solov.
07:57So we know that the MP can be good around here.
08:00But it just, you know, they didn't have the overall pace
08:03of the Tridents or the Campos.
08:05Who knows what they've done?
08:06Different teams running different setup philosophies,
08:09which some circuits suit other,
08:12some circuits suit some characteristics more than others.
08:15Campos, I've mentioned already,
08:16it seems like they run a very forward aero balance,
08:20which basically means that the aerodynamic grip of the car
08:22sits more on the front of the car.
08:24So it rotates a lot, the rear of the car dances around,
08:27but somehow it keeps it free.
08:29It allows the drivers to carry speed.
08:30Maybe slightly more tricky for the drivers
08:32to string a lap together,
08:33but if you can keep it in check
08:35and keep the car in that sort of your angle box
08:38that Alex Brundle likes to talk about,
08:40then you can extract the lap time.
08:42As Taffanen puts an initial time of 47.6 on the board.
08:46Last year's pole time for reference are 45 flat.
08:49I reckon we're going to be nudging the 44s
08:51for qualifying later on today
08:52because track conditions are a lot cooler than last year.
08:55Last year was sort of mid-20s
08:56and a 40-degree track temperature for qualifying,
08:59which should be a bit cooler than that today.
09:01Alessandro Giusti will be hoping to put in
09:03a good performance for Williams,
09:04a Williams junior driver.
09:06Where do you think the different setup then
09:08from different teams comes from?
09:10I know we're getting a little bit technical here,
09:12but is that just a feedback from the drivers, for example,
09:16or what the teams have in terms of their knowledge of the circuit?
09:20The teams tend to have a general setup philosophy
09:23that they set the mechanical balance of the car up with.
09:26So you've got a number of different springs
09:28and damping settings and geometries,
09:30which is the way wheels point both in terms of camber and tow.
09:36Tow is basically how the wheels point forwards and backwards,
09:38so they either point inwards to each other or outwards.
09:41Camber is whether they lean the top of the tyre in or out.
09:43And then the suspension settings and the rake as well,
09:46the ride height relative compared to front and rear,
09:49sets the overall oversteer or understeer of the car.
09:52And basically, teams will have a base setup
09:56which they go to low, medium, and high-speed circuits
09:59or low, medium, and high-grip circuits.
10:01And then they tweak it based on the specific layout.
10:04So at Silverstone here, you've got a lot of long open corners.
10:08You've got a lot of long corners that go off a long time.
10:11Not too much heavy braking,
10:13so you might make the car a bit more free,
10:15a bit more oversteer balance
10:17where the rear of the car slides around a bit more,
10:19as opposed to somewhere like Austria
10:21where you need the rear of the car to be settled and dialed
10:24and gripped into the track
10:25so you can get those traction out of those slow corners.
10:27Tell us about the challenge of this circuit as well.
10:29It's a unique challenge, isn't it?
10:31You've got likes of Copps, Maggots and Beckets here.
10:33How is it to drive those sections?
10:35It's honestly one of the best circuits in the world
10:37for cars like this, as we see Alessandro's USD,
10:39the Williams Junior,
10:40go pretty much flat out through Copps' Corner.
10:42And that's the challenge of Silverstone's circuits.
10:45So many high-speed circuits.
10:47And that's also an example of the challenge here at Silverstone
10:50is that there are track limits places where,
10:53or places where track limits will come into play in qualifying.
10:56You need to push absolutely up to the limit of the circuit,
10:59but it's easy to run slightly over.
11:01But it's also one of the only circuits
11:02where we see flowing S's section.
11:04The only three places,
11:05or only two places on the F3 calendar
11:07where we have full S's sections is here.
11:10And then, in fact, maybe it's only here, really,
11:13where you have long left, right, left, right,
11:16where the weight transfers from one side to the other.
11:18And it's just so high-speed, Chris.
11:20It really, honestly,
11:21the first time I drove a single-seater around Silverstone.
11:24I've never flown a plane,
11:25but I imagine it feels like what flying a plane is like
11:28because it's so smooth, so fast, so flat.
11:30You barely slow down.
11:32And you're just relying on the aerodynamics so much.
11:35Finn McLaughlin, no doubt, will be looking to drive here.
11:38One of the few circuits he knows took three podiums
11:41and a pole in British F4 here last year.
11:43Let's see what the Irishman had to say coming into the weekend.
11:47I love this place because it's very close to home.
11:49You know, the Irish people from across the water travel to here.
11:52And it's nice to see the fans like I did last year in the F4 we did.
11:55And the track itself is its own job.
11:58You know, you have high speed, slow speed,
12:00you know, every type of speed you want.
12:01And it's a very smooth track.
12:03You know, you have to be on it, very calm and driving style.
12:06And I think it does suit me because that's the way I drive.
12:08And I think that's why I've always got along well here.
12:10So, yeah, I'm just really excited to get going.
12:13It's just I've done well here in the past and I hope it carries on.
12:17He has done well.
12:18Good form in British F4 here.
12:20Young Finn McLaughlin will be a lot better to him, won't it?
12:24Coming into a circuit, he knows he's had to learn a lot of them so far this season.
12:29Yeah, it's good for Finn to be able to come to a circuit
12:32and have a bit of previous experience
12:34where he can just apply his knowledge of the circuit
12:36and then just have to apply that to the car
12:38rather than have to learn car and circuit all in one go.
12:42And, yeah, he'll be looking to be confident.
12:45It's a big challenge, a big step up.
12:46We've mentioned it before between F4 and F3,
12:50which is what Finn's done,
12:52which most drivers do a formula reason of some description.
12:56But, yeah, also the challenge here at Silverstone
12:58is the fact that we've got so many long high speed corners
13:01that the tyres take an absolute beating,
13:02which is why we've got the harder of the two compounds here this weekend.
13:06Oh, and just an example of pushing up to but beyond track limits there.
13:11That's the exit of the loop, the sort of end of the first sector.
13:14But, yeah, the front tyres around here this weekend
13:16will be the ones taking a beating as opposed to the rear tyres
13:18that we saw largely last weekend.
13:20Jin Nakamura, who's raced here already this season as well.
13:24So that, no doubt, is going to be a help to him.
13:28And we saw the difference it made for him.
13:32Red Bull Ring, a circuit he's really familiar with.
13:34High tech in the points on the podium for the first time this season.
13:38Nakamura racing, GB3, sort of dovetailing a dual campaign this season.
13:43And he was very strong up towards the podium places pretty consistently.
13:47And then, again, it's helpful to have had recent experience at the circuit,
13:51but you can't just copy-paste driving from, for example, a GB3 car to a Formula 3 car
13:57as he comes over the line, which I think will be a fairly quick lap.
13:59Yeah, it goes provisionally top.
14:00Again, we're still a couple of seconds away from where,
14:03in fact, more than a couple of seconds away
14:04from where I think we will be at the end of qualifying.
14:06But the circuit will rubber up and grip up pretty considerably
14:09as the weekend goes on.
14:10It'll look pretty green out there for the F1 Academy session, Chris.
14:13Ollie Oaks would have enjoyed watching that feature race.
14:15Can we, we need to talk about that feature race again here as well.
14:19We've got some time, honestly.
14:20I mean, what a race that was.
14:24What a battle this man had with Freddie Slater on that last lap.
14:28Yeah, I mean, my voice is only just about recovered since that race, Chris.
14:32It was incredible racing.
14:33And I really like the fact that we get to see
14:35two of our championship protagonists do battle on circuit.
14:38So often in a championship with 30 cars like Formula 3,
14:41two drivers will battle it out of the championship
14:43and very rarely be side-by-side on circuit.
14:46But we saw a proper, experienced hand at Uga Uga Chukwu
14:49facing off the young rookie in Freddie Slater.
14:53And on this occasion, it was Uga Chukwu that won out.
14:56But Slater really gave it a good go
14:57and showed that he was up for the challenge.
14:59Really did.
15:00And move of the season, I have to say, so far.
15:03From Pedro Claro as well.
15:05What an absolute move that was.
15:08Two round the outside.
15:09For the podium, wasn't it?
15:11Yeah.
15:11The vote for...
15:12Was that the day before?
15:13That was the day before, yeah.
15:14So, yeah, he did it twice, didn't he?
15:15Yeah, yeah.
15:16Incredible, incredible racing.
15:18And hopefully more to come this weekend.
15:19Unfortunately, Silverstone, historically,
15:21not so easy to overtake.
15:24With, you know, Austria,
15:25we had three back-to-back DRS zones here at Silverstone.
15:27Just the two.
15:28One down the Hangar Strait,
15:30which we've just been through towards Stowe Corner,
15:32where you can overtake inside and outside.
15:34And the second DRS through Aintree,
15:36down the Wellington Strait,
15:37into the Brooklyn section.
15:38So, overtaking interesting.
15:41But we're already seeing a bit of backing up
15:43as traffic into this final sector
15:45often proves a bit tricky,
15:47especially towards qualifying.
15:48Although there is a note from the race director,
15:50you must be basically at racing speed
15:52on the racing line
15:53basically by the time you get to Stowe Corner.
15:56Right.
15:56Actually, slightly before.
15:57Halfway down the Hangar Strait is the instruction.
15:58So, if drivers are ignoring that,
16:00they will be getting, at the very least,
16:02a slapped wrist.
16:02Yes.
16:04And it's a long lap here as well, isn't it?
16:06So, you can't really leave it
16:08until the very last minute.
16:09Let's go on board with Luka Ogachucki.
16:11Yeah, riding on board down towards term,
16:12well, three, which is Village.
16:14Let's go on board with,
16:15for a full lap with Ogachucki.
16:16We're getting into the loop.
16:17A tricky corner where there's
16:18some subtle camber change on the way in.
16:20Easy to run wide,
16:21as we saw Tappanen do a couple of laps ago.
16:23We had flat out through Aintree.
16:25This is our first DRS zone
16:26down the Wellington Strait.
16:28Drivers staying to the right-hand side
16:29as we see the BRDC Clubhouse
16:30on the right-hand side.
16:31Using all the kerb on the entry,
16:33braking and turning at the same time,
16:35the slight headwind into here
16:36will help the front of the car.
16:37Grips, don't go completely out to the kerb
16:39because you need to open up Luffield,
16:40this long double apex right-hander.
16:42Traction out of here crucial
16:43because we go flat out
16:45towards the exit and through Woodcoot.
16:46And we head towards
16:48one of the big challenges on the circuit,
16:50Copse Corner.
16:51In qualifying,
16:51it's very much a risk versus reward.
16:53Do you go flat out
16:54or do you just give it a bit of a breathe
16:56on the throttle
16:57to allow the car to grip up
16:59and not run over track limits?
17:00Again, the Campos,
17:01always has good rotation,
17:03the high speed.
17:03Now one of the best corner sections
17:05in the world.
17:06Maggots, the right-hander.
17:07We can go through the left of Beckett's,
17:09absolutely dancing on the limit of Griffin.
17:10Ooga-Chicken with a big snap
17:12into Chapel,
17:13but getting us,
17:13somehow gathering it up
17:15and getting it a decent exit
17:16onto the hangar straight.
17:17You don't need to go all the way
17:18to the right-hand side
17:19onto the hangar straight.
17:20Shorter line
17:21as we head towards Stowe.
17:22The track's ever so slightly
17:24goes uphill
17:25as we head into Stowe.
17:26Breaking and down
17:27just two gears here.
17:28Try and nip the apex.
17:29The car always understeers
17:31on the exit here.
17:32Watch out for track limits.
17:33Then we go down towards
17:33heavy braking,
17:34Vail chicane,
17:35overtaking opportunity
17:36in the races.
17:37Curves flattened for this year
17:38on the right-hander.
17:39A lot of curb on the left
17:41for Ooga-Chicken.
17:41Flat out,
17:42hopefully through club.
17:43And that pretty much rounds out
17:44a full lap
17:45of the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit.
17:46What a circuit
17:48to go racing at
17:48in Formula 3 Championship.
17:50Brilliant stuff.
17:51Thank you.
17:51Piers Friar,
17:52Ernesto Rivera
17:53to the top.
17:54Will he stay there though?
17:55Here comes Freddy Slater
17:57looking for his first win
17:59in FIA 3 this season
18:01and goes to the top.
18:02And here's one for you,
18:04Piers,
18:04as that time coming in
18:05from Freddy.
18:06Half a second clear
18:07of Ernesto Rivera.
18:08This is a circuit
18:09I think
18:09the circuit he is best at.
18:12He has taken eight wins,
18:13ten podiums,
18:14and six poles
18:15in 15 races here.
18:16Wow.
18:17So good form for Slater
18:18and continuing that on
18:19as we watch Slater
18:20in a replay
18:20going into Brooklyn's
18:22and Luffield's section.
18:23That, I mean,
18:24he's half a second clear
18:25with a mistake like that.
18:27That's pretty intimidating,
18:28isn't it?
18:29Wow.
18:29Let's jump aboard
18:30with Taito Carto
18:31here for the ART team.
18:33Flat out,
18:33are we through turn one?
18:35Yes!
18:38Just about,
18:39but as showing
18:40that the circuit
18:42is not quite exactly
18:43where the drivers
18:44expect it to be
18:45at this stage.
18:46You can see the dust
18:46being kicked up.
18:47That will get
18:48sort of cleaned away
18:49as all 30 F3 cars
18:51go around
18:51and we've got F2
18:52and F1
18:53and F1 Academy as well.
18:54So there will be
18:55a decent amount
18:55of circuit evolution.
18:57Not maybe as much
18:57as we see at Street Circuit,
18:59but this circuit
18:59uses a lot during the week
19:00and throughout the year
19:01for every four categories
19:02all over.
19:03But as the Pirelli rubber
19:04goes down this weekend,
19:05the circuit will certainly
19:06come towards the drivers
19:07and the slight oversteer
19:08balance that we saw
19:09with the Gachuku
19:10and the Slat
19:11and the snap from Slater
19:12will also go away
19:13because generally
19:13as the circuit grips up,
19:15the rear just gets
19:16a bit more locked
19:17into the circuit
19:17and the drivers
19:18have a bit more confidence
19:19with every run
19:20that they do.
19:20I'm sure his reactions
19:21were fairly similar
19:22in the car there.
19:25Ernesto Rivera,
19:26we caught a glimpse
19:26of him.
19:27Great result for him.
19:28I mean,
19:29given he's a driver
19:30who had to miss
19:31the first round
19:32due to injury,
19:34quickly finding
19:35some points up,
19:36isn't he?
19:36And took that sprint
19:37race win as well.
19:38Amazing for Rivera.
19:40the driver that came
19:41into this season
19:41off the back
19:42of a difficult pre-season.
19:44We've spoken about it
19:45before, Chris,
19:46but injury in the Formula
19:48Regional Oceania trophy
19:49down in the Southern
19:51Hemisphere,
19:51the pre-season championship
19:52meant he missed
19:53the first events
19:54of the season.
19:55But he's back
19:56and he's showing
19:57that even though
19:58he's the youngest
19:58full-time driver
19:59on the grid,
20:00he's got a wise head
20:02on young shoulders.
20:03Before we move too far
20:04away from Gachuku
20:04and Slater,
20:05Chris,
20:06you've given me
20:06a nice little fact
20:07about Slater's history.
20:08I'm going to give you
20:09a nice little something.
20:10Let's do this.
20:11The current two drivers
20:14at the front of the
20:15championship this year,
20:15Gachuku and Slater,
20:16are driving the exact
20:17same chassis
20:18as our two drivers
20:20who won the second
20:21and first
20:21in last year's championship.
20:22So Gachuku is in
20:24Solov's exact chassis
20:25and Slater is in
20:26Kamaru's exact chassis.
20:28So the chassis numbers,
20:30so basically they're
20:30sitting in the same seat,
20:31which I thought
20:32was an interesting fact
20:33of the same two cars.
20:34are up there.
20:36That is a very good one.
20:37It always seems to be
20:39the number five as well,
20:40Trident,
20:41is the one
20:42that always seems to
20:45get the best results
20:46except for Leo Fornaroli.
20:48He was in the four.
20:50Taito Kato,
20:51bit of a moment
20:51coming through
20:53Stoke Corner,
20:54but great stuff
20:56in terms of stats there.
20:57And I believe there's plenty,
20:58there's more to come.
20:59Let's follow Taito Kato
21:00around the final corner,
21:01so he's been really impressive.
21:03Up to the top 12,
21:04remember they reversed
21:05for the sprint race,
21:06it is.
21:06Freddie Slater in
21:07chassis F325-022,
21:10which was Kamaru's last year,
21:12and Ugochuku in
21:14F325-030,
21:16which was solid.
21:16Perfect.
21:17Perfect.
21:17That is absolutely brilliant.
21:20One for the nerds out there.
21:23Rodin looking very much
21:24in-depth in thought
21:25at the moment.
21:26The driver's not
21:27challenging the front of the field
21:28at this stage
21:29of the session.
21:30They would have been happy
21:31with that race
21:33last week,
21:33Clero's performance.
21:35Louis Sharp,
21:37we're watching now.
21:38This is a driver who
21:39really could do with
21:40a breakthrough weekend.
21:42I mean,
21:42qualifying for him
21:43has been his biggest struggle
21:44so far
21:45in Formula 3.
21:47And it shows
21:48how important
21:49it is,
21:50doesn't it?
21:50Because
21:51with the good
21:52qualifying results,
21:53I know it sounds
21:54quite obvious,
21:55but as long as you're
21:55in that top 12
21:56on a regular basis,
21:58you've got a chance
21:59to fight for points
22:00very quickly.
22:01And that's what
22:01Louis Sharp will be
22:02looking to do
22:03this weekend.
22:04Yeah,
22:04let's not forget this.
22:05Even though Prima
22:06in this generation
22:07of car
22:07haven't maybe
22:08had the pace
22:09that they showed
22:10in the previous
22:10generation of Formula 3 car.
22:12This was a good
22:12weekend last year
22:14for them.
22:14Ugachuku raced
22:15for Prima last season,
22:16second in qualifying
22:17last year,
22:18if my memory serves
22:19me correctly,
22:20and it does.
22:21So he,
22:22you know,
22:22we know that Prima
22:22can be quicker
22:23on Silverstone
22:23over one lap.
22:24And Sharp
22:26just popping it in
22:27fourth fast
22:27at the moment.
22:28I mean,
22:29granted,
22:29eight tenths away
22:29from the best we've had,
22:30but still a good
22:31start to the weekend.
22:32And if Sharp
22:32can get himself
22:33inside the points,
22:34there's a circuit
22:34that he knows well
22:35as well.
22:36He's taken
22:37very good wins.
22:38He's taken a lot
22:39of good results here
22:40when he raced
22:40in GB3,
22:41for example,
22:42which comes to this
22:42circuit twice most seasons.
22:44where he was champion
22:45in 2023.
22:47Hang on,
22:48my maths,
22:4924,
22:49sorry.
22:50That's two years ago,
22:50wasn't it?
22:51God,
22:51it's 26 already,
22:52Chris.
22:53And,
22:53yeah,
22:53so,
22:54I know,
22:55you're absolutely right.
22:55I reckon if Sharp
22:56can get a good qualifying
22:57on the board,
22:58then this might be
22:58one of his stronger results.
22:59And at the circuit,
23:00we know that Prima
23:01can do well out
23:02in this car.
23:03Ernesto Rivera
23:04wanted nine drivers
23:05on debut here.
23:06Claro,
23:06Carto,
23:07Deligny,
23:08Gladys,
23:08Spornaghi,
23:09Viran Bhakti,
23:10Di Paolo,
23:11and Barrichello,
23:12the other drivers
23:13who will be making
23:15their debut.
23:15So those returning drivers
23:17really will want to
23:18take advantage
23:19of their experience
23:20because it's not
23:21the easiest circuit
23:22to learn,
23:23is it?
23:23Of course,
23:23they would have done
23:24a lot of sim work,
23:25but there is a lot
23:27development to this
23:28Silverstone circuit.
23:30And with this circuit
23:32always comes a huge
23:33amount of support
23:34for the feeder series.
23:38Let's have a look
23:38at Freddy Slater,
23:39shall we?
23:40Oh,
23:41there we go.
23:42And that's that
23:42wrist rest reward
23:43that I alluded to
23:44on the on-board lap
23:45that we had
23:46with Ugo Ugochuku.
23:47And then another example
23:48is Mace Gwadish,
23:49a big swapper
23:50of oversteer.
23:51That's Copps Corner,
23:52which is in qualifying
23:53it may be flat out,
23:55maybe,
23:56if you're not quite.
23:57The issue this year
23:58is you've got a slight
23:58tailwind,
23:59a westerly wind,
24:00which is a slight
24:00tailwind into that corner
24:01as Slater also goes
24:03wide at Stowe.
24:04Copps is a corner
24:06which rewards
24:07minimum speed
24:08because you arrive
24:09at high speed
24:10and you leave
24:10at high speed
24:11and you barely
24:11slow down.
24:12You need to keep
24:13minimum speed up,
24:14which means you carry
24:14a lot of speed in.
24:15But if you just do
24:16like one or two Ks
24:17too much,
24:17then you run over
24:18track limits on the exit
24:19and your whole lap time
24:20can be deleted.
24:20Ernesto Rivera,
24:21one of the eight
24:22different winners
24:23we've had
24:23in the first eight
24:24races.
24:25Let's see what the
24:25Mexican had to say
24:26about his victory
24:27coming into the weekend.
24:30Yeah, it was great
24:32to win in the Red Bull
24:33ring.
24:33It was such a special
24:34moment.
24:35I've never, like,
24:36lived to live.
24:38Like, it was my dream
24:39to win in a Formula One
24:40weekend.
24:40So, yeah,
24:41it was amazing
24:42and hopefully
24:44I get many more.
24:48Good to hear from
24:49Ernesto Rivera.
24:50And like he said,
24:50it's a real dream
24:51come true for these
24:52drivers, isn't it?
24:53To go out
24:54and take the
24:55chequered flag
24:56and stand on
24:57a Grand Prix podium,
24:58hear your national
24:59anthem,
25:00go around the
25:01whole circuit,
25:02the whole paddock.
25:03I think that's
25:04going to be a moment
25:05he remembers
25:06for a very long time.
25:08Arvid Lindblad
25:08still talks about
25:09doing the double
25:11here at Silverstone
25:12and you could argue
25:13that was one
25:14of the real
25:15moments in his
25:16career that
25:17elevated him
25:18towards his seat
25:19now in Formula
25:20One as he gets
25:21ready to race
25:22here on a
25:23British Grand Prix
25:24weekend.
25:24These moments
25:25for the drivers
25:26can be huge
25:27in their careers.
25:28Yeah, absolutely.
25:28If you have a
25:29standout weekend,
25:31it can put yourself
25:32very much in the
25:33window to a lot
25:34of the teams
25:34and also the fans,
25:35but also then give
25:36yourself a lot of
25:37confidence.
25:37But actually
25:38looking back,
25:38I misremembered,
25:39I thought Sharp
25:40had taken wins here.
25:41He's actually never
25:41won at this circuit
25:42before.
25:43He's had podiums
25:44in both British
25:44F4 and in GB3,
25:48but never won
25:49a round here.
25:50So, I mean,
25:52he may well take
25:53his first this weekend.
25:53I think it will be
25:54hard for the
25:54Premiers at the
25:55moment, based on
25:56form at the
25:57moment, to take it
25:58to both the
25:59Tridents and the
26:00Campos, who I think
26:01are going to
26:01dominate this weekend.
26:02An example of the
26:03domination of
26:03Trident and Campos
26:05in this iteration of
26:06car to last year
26:07in this season.
26:08Only three teams
26:09have taken pole
26:10position at all.
26:11Campos, Trident
26:12and AIX.
26:14And only, I think
26:14it's, how many
26:15drivers, I don't
26:16know on this.
26:16Only three teams
26:17have ever taken
26:18pole in this
26:18generation of car
26:19and only four
26:20drivers.
26:21Solov, Niall,
26:22Kamara and
26:22Benavidez are the
26:23only four drivers
26:24to have ever taken
26:24pole in over a
26:26season and a half.
26:27Yeah, which is,
26:28I mean, it was,
26:29as you said, it
26:30was Kamara, Solov
26:32who were really
26:33dominating it last
26:34season.
26:34Benavidez joined
26:35in as well.
26:36Three pole sitters
26:37and then this
26:38season, he, Yamakashi,
26:39is the only one
26:40who's beaten
26:40Oh, and Yamakashi,
26:42of course.
26:42Niall, which is
26:45absolutely crazy.
26:46I mean, the form
26:46from Tearfield Niall
26:47has been unbelievable.
26:48Here's Freddie
26:49Slater, though,
26:50currently fastest.
26:52This will be the one
26:53he wants to win
26:54this weekend.
26:55He's going to have
26:55a new crash helmet,
26:57I believe, for this
26:57weekend as well.
26:59Freddie Slater.
27:00For all the drivers,
27:01when they get in front
27:02of their home crowd,
27:03it's going to be a
27:03special moment,
27:04and for Irishman
27:05Finn McLaughlin,
27:05there'll be plenty
27:06of support around
27:07the circuit,
27:08I'm sure as well.
27:09Yeah, he was saying
27:09in the Frehley preview
27:11that he's looking
27:12forward to seeing
27:13a lot of the Irish
27:13flags around us,
27:14effectively his home
27:16race, the closest
27:16we get to Ireland.
27:17Yeah, some of the Irish
27:19fans don't like him
27:20when I say that,
27:21but it's as close
27:24as he's going to get.
27:26As close as he's
27:26going to get for now.
27:27For now.
27:28Irish Grand Prix
27:292057, who knows?
27:30Yeah, exactly that.
27:32Well, with Alex Dunn
27:33and Finn McLaughlin
27:34doing so well,
27:35the Irish fans have a lot
27:37to be excited about,
27:39don't they, right now?
27:40Noah Stromstead,
27:42just waiting for him
27:43to come across
27:44and set some times.
27:45We're seeing some
27:46track limits being
27:47deleted, Piers.
27:48That has played a part
27:49in these qualifying
27:50sessions in the past.
27:52They are long qualifying,
27:54they're 30-minute
27:55qualifying sessions,
27:56but if you get things
27:58like red flags
27:58and you haven't got
27:59a lap on the board,
28:01then that can make
28:03things difficult
28:04very quickly towards
28:05the end.
28:05I think Dino Beganovich,
28:07who was a driver
28:07who struggled with it
28:08in the past,
28:08when then everyone
28:09was queuing up
28:10whilst he was trying
28:11to set his lap.
28:12So, yeah,
28:13it's definitely one
28:15that you have to be aware
28:16of.
28:16You've got to get
28:16that banker lap in.
28:18Yeah, we've seen,
28:19haven't we,
28:19the drivers that
28:20don't get a good
28:21first run in
28:21tend not to then
28:24feature in the
28:25fight for pole.
28:26The exceptions with
28:27that we've seen
28:28maybe in F2
28:28is camera,
28:30and I think we've
28:31had that once last
28:31year with the camera
28:32as well.
28:32But other than that,
28:33you know,
28:33with the driver
28:33that's been dominant
28:34in pole positions,
28:35even this season,
28:37we've had Tearfield Nile
28:38taking the first
28:38three pole positions,
28:39didn't get a banker
28:40lap in,
28:40and then had an issue
28:41in his last run.
28:42It was 23rd,
28:4322nd,
28:44I think,
28:44wasn't it,
28:44in qualifying last
28:45time out.
28:46So, yeah,
28:47although Silverstone,
28:49because it's got such
28:49an expanse of space
28:51and such a lot of
28:53runoff at the corners,
28:54they'd likely have a red
28:55flag at the end of
28:56qualifying is slimmer
28:57than a lot of circuits,
28:59especially than the
29:00street circuit.
29:00However,
29:01you just need to make
29:03sure that you've got
29:04a decent lap on the
29:05board to give yourself
29:06the best chance at the
29:06top 12.
29:07I expect to see three
29:08runs in qualifying,
29:09in all honesty,
29:10because we've got three
29:12sets of the Ferrelli
29:12hard tyres they can use
29:13after this session.
29:14They've had one new set
29:15for use in this session
29:17alone,
29:17which will then be
29:17basically put to one
29:19side.
29:19I expect most teams
29:21and drivers to be out
29:22straight away in
29:22qualifying,
29:23getting three runs in,
29:24because the circuit
29:25will change.
29:26Even though it's nearly
29:27six kilometres,
29:285.89 kilometres
29:29around here,
29:29there will probably
29:30be queuing up in
29:31the last sector.
29:32The chance of you
29:32getting held up by
29:33a driver making
29:34mistake is also not
29:35zero as well.
29:36So, you know,
29:37it just gives you
29:39mentally and logistically
29:40a better opportunity
29:41to be higher up in
29:42the order.
29:42Will we see teams
29:44going out in the gap
29:45again?
29:45I mean,
29:46Van Amersfoort
29:46played it perfectly
29:47with Hiyu Yamakoshi
29:48in F3.
29:49Then Campos did
29:50exactly the same
29:51with Noleon in
29:52Formula 2.
29:53Will we see things
29:54like this happening?
29:56Because MP have got
29:57they had Giusti out
29:59there,
29:59Stromstead have
30:00sent their drivers
30:01out there now.
30:02Do you think that
30:03could happen again?
30:04It could,
30:04but there's less
30:05opportunity for that
30:06in qualifying here
30:07because at Austria
30:09just one week ago,
30:10the lap time was in
30:10the low one minutes.
30:12Whereas here,
30:12we're looking at
30:13a one minute 45,
30:15probably maybe
30:15nudging a 44 for pole.
30:17So an out lap
30:17is two and a half minutes,
30:19then your warm-up
30:19lap's two minutes.
30:20So you've got two and a half
30:21minutes plus two minutes.
30:22You're looking at five
30:22minutes just to get
30:23to start your lap.
30:24Then you do one,
30:25maybe two flying laps,
30:26so that's then another
30:27two minutes of that.
30:27So you get towards eight
30:28minutes and you do that
30:29three times.
30:30There's not a lot of
30:30wiggle room in there,
30:31whereas at Austria,
30:32we had a lot more
30:33wiggle room because,
30:34you know,
30:35it's less laps to get
30:36the tyres in position.
30:37So I think we may see
30:40a slight,
30:40maybe some teams
30:42when everyone queues
30:42up in the pit lane,
30:43they might wait a minute
30:44or so just to go on
30:45the other half of the
30:45circuit.
30:46But I don't expect to
30:47see many drivers out
30:48and qualifying completely
30:49on their own.
30:50Although you never know,
30:51they might take a risk
30:52and maybe try and go out
30:53in that about sort of
30:54eight minutes to go
30:56situation when everyone
30:57is in the pits changing.
30:58Maybe one team will gamble
30:59and you're only using
31:00two sets of tyres and
31:01then maybe saving a full
31:02fresh set of hard tyres
31:04for the feature.
31:05But that would be a
31:06high-risk strategy in my
31:07opinion.
31:07You can see the DRS is
31:10just one of two zones,
31:11as Pierre said earlier
31:12in this session.
31:13Strongstead yet to put a
31:15real time on the board.
31:16Good to see Matteo Di Paolo
31:17up there in third.
31:18He's had a difficult season
31:19at times so far.
31:22And likewise,
31:23Yevon David,
31:24this is one of the few
31:25circuits he does know.
31:26And he's showing his
31:28experience already up
31:29there in the top ten.
31:31As Noah Strongstead now
31:32goes up to P6.
31:34You may see sometimes
31:36drop down that timing
31:37tower.
31:38It happened to Pedro
31:38Claro just a minute or
31:39so ago.
31:40That would mean their lap
31:40has been deleted due to
31:43track limits.
31:44But good to see Matteo
31:45Di Paolo.
31:46And this is him on screen
31:47now, Piers.
31:48Up to P2.
31:49He's had a really
31:50difficult run of things
31:51so far.
31:52Formula Regional vice
31:53champion of Freddie
31:54Slater last year.
31:55McLaren Junior as well.
31:57The only McLaren Junior
31:58in F2 or F3.
32:00But didn't really have a
32:02pre-season.
32:02And that seemed to be
32:03affecting him at
32:05pre-season testing.
32:06That's exactly what I was
32:07about to say.
32:08One of the few drivers
32:08especially towards the
32:09front of the grid that
32:10didn't do any sort of
32:11Formula Regional in
32:13Middle East or
32:14Formula Regional Oceania.
32:17And we heard at the
32:18pre-season test when we
32:18went there, didn't we,
32:19Chris?
32:19We spoke to Matteo and
32:20he said him and his team
32:21have been working really
32:22hard.
32:22He's been in the sim
32:23relentlessly, potentially
32:24more so even than his
32:25teammates.
32:26But unfortunately, nothing
32:27like the real thing,
32:28Chris, unfortunately.
32:29So it's been a little bit
32:31on the back foot, but we
32:32know the quality of
32:33Di Paolo took the fight
32:35to Slater last year,
32:37didn't he?
32:37He's moved up as well
32:38because Di Paolo raced
32:39with Trident last year.
32:41So he knows the team.
32:42He knows how to work
32:43behind the scenes.
32:43I'm sure he'll get there,
32:44but it's just taken him a
32:45little bit longer to get
32:46up to speed with his
32:47Formula 3 car and get on
32:49terms with his two
32:49teammates who are, you
32:51know, regularly inside the
32:52top 12.
32:52And I reckon if we see
32:53Di Paolo get one weekend
32:55where he qualifies in the
32:56top 12, has a couple of
32:57solid results, it will
32:58steady the ship.
32:59And then he'll be able
32:59to push on from there
33:00because we know how
33:00consistent he can be over
33:02a season.
33:02He just needs to find the
33:03ultimate pace, which we
33:04know is in there somewhere.
33:05Is it a case of when
33:06things are not quite
33:08clicking, the bad luck
33:09almost can follow you
33:10around a bit until you
33:11get that really good
33:12qualifying performance in
33:13two solid results, like
33:14you said.
33:15And then, similar to what
33:16we're seeing with drivers
33:17towards the front, you
33:18just start to put the
33:19results in.
33:20I mean, Brando Badouer
33:21was a great example of
33:22that at the start of the
33:23season.
33:23100% completely agree.
33:25When you're racing in a
33:27category such as this with
33:2829, I don't think
33:29other extremely talented
33:30drivers.
33:31I mean, all of these
33:32drivers on this grid will
33:33have won races, most of
33:34which have won
33:34championships, as we've
33:35seen.
33:36An issue in the pit lane
33:37looks like a battery is
33:39not decided, doesn't want
33:40to be a battery anymore.
33:41So hopefully there's no
33:43lasting issue because of
33:44that.
33:44But, yeah, yeah, if you get on
33:48what is going on here.
33:51Yeah, some sort of technical
33:52issue, isn't it, for Tapanen?
33:54Yeah, a lot of the cars and
33:56teams use external batteries
34:00to start the cars.
34:02But it's actually the one that was
34:03apparently underneath, may well
34:05have been underneath the pod of
34:05the car.
34:06So that's unfortunate for Tapanen.
34:09Colton is running, but they'll
34:09plug a new battery in and away
34:11he'll go for the end of this
34:11session, I would imagine.
34:13Yamakoshi pushing the absolute
34:14limits.
34:15Just a reminder that, you know,
34:16I did say there was only three
34:18teams.
34:18It was Trident, Campos and AIX.
34:21But, of course, my research
34:22didn't include last weekend.
34:24Well, it was just a few days
34:26ago, wasn't it?
34:26It's right.
34:27It's not like it was only four
34:28days ago.
34:29So four teams and five drivers.
34:33Sorry, I didn't forget.
34:35No, we didn't forget.
34:37Historic, historic hole, isn't
34:38it, for him as well.
34:40But, yes, like we were talking
34:43about, things can then just start
34:44to fall into place, can't they?
34:46In terms of getting that
34:48momentum, if you like, in a
34:49season go.
34:50It's strange as a driver and a
34:53young athlete in any sport, but
34:54in sports where margins are so
34:56fine, such as FIA Formula 3 with
34:58so many competitors, one good
35:00result can set off a trend that
35:02then keeps you trending in the
35:03right direction.
35:04And one bad result, bad weekend,
35:06can sort of start a downward
35:07spiral.
35:08So you just need to kind of
35:09maximise every session.
35:11I mean, we don't get any points
35:12or anything for practice.
35:13It's purely setting yourself up
35:14for qualifying.
35:14But a good run in practice, a
35:16good lap at the end of the
35:17session can give you a good
35:19confidence.
35:19Go, I just need to repeat that
35:20for qualifying, which then gives
35:22you a bit more confidence in
35:23qualifying so you ever get a
35:24better first run in, which
35:25means there's less pressure on
35:26the final run in qualifying,
35:27which means you have better
35:28qualifying, which blah, blah, blah.
35:29And then a good race weekend
35:30leads into a two or three.
35:31And it's really is a momentum
35:33sport.
35:33And a challenge for these drivers
35:35is also if things are not going
35:37your way.
35:37How do you stop bad momentum and
35:38flip the switch?
35:40Yevon David, no doubt someone
35:42who would be looking at this as a
35:43season to develop.
35:44This could be a thing one of the
35:46weekends he would have highlighted
35:48on his calendar.
35:49You will know him yourself,
35:50Piers, racing here in the GB3
35:52championship last season.
35:54So this one for him, he'll want to
35:57get the pace out of that AIX that
36:00we have seen come through from the
36:02likes of Brad Benavidez who used
36:04his experience and Yevon David
36:06raced here in GB3 top 10 finish
36:09he took last season as well.
36:11So no doubt this would have been
36:13one of the ones he was looking
36:15forward to, the Sri Lankan driver
36:17who I have to say has remained
36:18very positive throughout the season
36:21really seems to be enjoying
36:23putting that flag in the F1 Panic.
36:25Yeah, no doubt.
36:26Yevon David, a driver that's,
36:29you know, he's racing Euro
36:30Formula Open isn't he in the second
36:31in that last season.
36:32So he knows the cars with high
36:33downforce.
36:34Euro Formula Open is a Formula
36:35regional level championship
36:37where they race cars with a lot
36:38of downforce, not as much power
36:39as these FIA Formula 3 cars.
36:41And Silverstone really suits that
36:44sort of driving style, carrying
36:46the speed and relying on the
36:48downforce.
36:49It's Ugachuku, we've seen him a
36:50couple of times, absolutely on the
36:51ragged edge.
36:52So not exactly the fastest way
36:54to go through the corners, but
36:55certainly a driver that's high on
36:57confidence because he trusts
36:58himself to be able to absolutely
37:00throw that Campos car at the
37:01corner.
37:02But at the moment, not able to
37:05best the times we've seen at the
37:06front of the field with Slater.
37:07As we see Tappen out of the car,
37:09so we'll see no more from
37:10Tuukka in this one.
37:11Wow, was that a bit of air time
37:13there from Claro coming out of
37:15Stowe.
37:16Makes his way now through the
37:19final corner, really stole the
37:20show at times last weekend.
37:23The Brazilian driver will be
37:25excited for his first performance
37:26here, currently down in 23rd, but
37:28looked like a big moment coming out
37:30of Stowe corner there.
37:31Yeah, he came out of Stowe and got
37:33two wheels a bit wider over the exit
37:35curb and the plank, the resin board
37:38that runs underneath the middle of the
37:39car, as we'll see from Tuukka as well.
37:42If you go over the car a bit too
37:43wide, the plank hits the ground and
37:45if it hits the front, it raises the
37:47front of the ground and if the rear
37:48of the plank hits the curb, then it
37:50gives you oversteer.
37:51So let's have a look at this.
37:52Yeah, so wide in the middle of the
37:53corner, there's that understeer, the
37:55characteristic understeer we see on
37:56the exit of Stowe.
37:58Stowe goes up onto a crest at this
37:59stage and it flattens out of the
38:01apex and starts to drop away now,
38:02which basically accentuates any
38:04attitude you have in the car.
38:05If you've got oversteer, the car will
38:07oversteer more.
38:08Understeer in the middle of the
38:09corner, it will push on wide.
38:11And unfortunately, in that instance,
38:13Claro a bit too much speed to the
38:14middle of the corner, didn't hold the
38:15brake to keep the weight on the nose
38:16enough and therefore just a little
38:18bit of understeer, ran wide and
38:21uncomfortable ride, but I don't think
38:22any lasting damage at this stage.
38:24But Claro, Roden not looking the most
38:26comfortable in this session, are they,
38:29at the moment?
38:29Currently sitting Badawer 22nd, 26th for
38:32Claro and 29th for Christian Ho.
38:34And the time's a bit more strung out
38:35this weekend we'll see than Austria a week
38:38ago because, I mean, the lap's longer and
38:41there's more corners.
38:41So that kind of, any differences are
38:43multiplied.
38:44Yeah.
38:45As to the challenges, Christian Ho had a
38:47good weekend here last season.
38:50We'll be hoping to kickstart his season.
38:54But so far, very impressive update from
38:56Matteo Di Paolo and also Yevon David,
38:59two of the standout performers in this session.
39:01If Yevon David could get a top 12 and be on
39:03the front row for the sprint race, he'd be
39:06incredibly pleased with that.
39:07And Di Paolo showing us the challenges of
39:10Maggots and Beckets there.
39:11Yeah, that was a car right on the ragged
39:13edge and we'll see a bit more of that, I
39:14reckon, at the start of qualifying at the
39:16very least.
39:17Drivers in this, half an hour granted,
39:19sounds like a long time, but they'll only
39:20get four or five flying laps in this
39:22session and therefore they need to go out
39:24and absolutely find the limit of grip.
39:27Because if you go out there and take three
39:28or four laps to get up to the limit of grip,
39:30you've missed the session and then therefore
39:32you're going to be left wondering how much
39:34grip there is and what the car balance is
39:35like in qualifying.
39:36You need to go out there and absolutely
39:37push straight away to see what the car is
39:40doing, to be able to feedback that to the
39:41engineer, to make changes for qualifying.
39:43And then also, you know that you've found a
39:45limit in practice and you can try to push
39:47basically the same level of hardness to the
39:49corners because once the grip comes up for
39:52qualifying, the car will probably, probably
39:55grip up.
39:55And this is the planned virtual safety car at the
39:57end of this session.
39:58And this virtual safety car out and Teofield
40:02Nile we are on board with.
40:04How does he put that one behind him last
40:06weekend?
40:07I mean, as you said, is it just a case that
40:09didn't get a banker lap in and the rest is
40:12history, if you like?
40:13Because trying to come through from where he
40:15was, row 12 on the grid, incredibly difficult,
40:18as you've already highlighted, in such a
40:20competitive field.
40:21So is that a case of just put that one
40:24behind, I'm still in the championship fight?
40:26Yeah, yeah.
40:27Just, just catch everyone up.
40:28Normally we have the virtual safety car at the
40:30start of the practice session.
40:31This weekend we've got it at the end and then
40:33we'll have practice starts because there's no
40:34start box at the end of the pit lane.
40:35But yes, Teofield will look back on last weekend.
40:38There's a poor weekend, a poor performance in
40:39qualifying.
40:40But that was all.
40:41He was fast in practice.
40:43He looked comfortable.
40:44He just didn't execute that one qualifying session.
40:47And we know Teofield, he's a confident young driver.
40:51He knows his ability.
40:53He's got three poles this year.
40:54He knows if he executes, he can get up there in
40:56terms of the order and qualifying, which will give
40:58him a good weekend.
40:59So I don't think it will have down to his confidence
41:01a huge amount.
41:02He'll be frustrated that he's lost out points in a
41:04championship.
41:04But I think he'll come back and be certainly challenging
41:08for the top ten, almost certainly as well for pole
41:10position later on today.
41:12Riding on board with Freddie Slater on this virtual
41:14safety car, will this, will they be doing anything at
41:17this point, Piers?
41:18Because we saw at times virtual safety cars this
41:20season, there's been big swings in the races, haven't
41:23they, where drivers have got a restart to it very well and
41:26caught out others who haven't.
41:27Virtual safety cars and safety car restarts are things
41:33that seem boring, seem un-racing driver glamorous, but
41:37are ultimately things that can decide your weekends.
41:39Virtual safety cars is a bit, slightly more of a lottery in
41:42terms of the restart because it often depends.
41:44Where you are on the circuit when the virtual safety car
41:47comes out as to how much time you lose and you brake and
41:49slow down.
41:50And then when it comes, goes green again, do you just see the
41:53light at the right time?
41:54Are you in the right gear?
41:54Are you accelerating already?
41:56Are you just braking to warm your tyres?
41:57So that's a bit of a lottery, but a full safety car
42:00restart.
42:00We saw James Wharton doing so well two seasons ago and last
42:04year and this year as well at Austria with the virtual
42:06safety car restarts as an example.
42:09But you can also lose out in a full safety car restart.
42:12If you have a poor start, you're going to be
42:13vulnerable straight away.
42:14Yeah.
42:15And as you said, it can be a bit of a lottery, but it's not a
42:19moment for a driver to switch off.
42:21Oh, no, no.
42:22They're very much on because as soon as a safety car, virtual
42:25safety car or safety car boards come out, it's not like, right,
42:28chill out for a bit.
42:29You just, your brain switches job.
42:31You know, you multitask.
42:32You're right.
42:33My job was drive as fast as I can.
42:34I'll keep the Pirelli tyres in order.
42:35Now it's, right, keep the Pirelli tyres at exactly the temperature
42:39that I need them at for when we go green.
42:41So whether that's, they need cooling.
42:43So the fronts around here take an absolute beating, especially
42:45that front left tyre with so many high speed, high loaded,
42:48high downforce corners such as Cops, this one.
42:50So then generally the virtual safety car will come out.
42:53The drivers will take a few corners, let that front tyre cool
42:56down, take a breather, and then they'll keep all four tyres and
43:00the brakes up to temperature.
43:01So when they go green, they can hit it straight away.
43:04Absolutely.
43:05That is going to be some great racing this weekend.
43:08No doubt about that.
43:10One driver who's been very good this season so far, Taito Kato,
43:15really enjoying big within the F1 paddock, having been a lifelong fan.
43:19Let's see what he had to say about it coming into the weekend.
43:24It's an amazing track.
43:25For sure.
43:27When I was a kid, I watched it on the TV, just in front,
43:30every time watching the Silverstone, the Formula One.
43:34That was kind of a dream coming too.
43:36So I'm an amazing feeling now.
43:39So I can't wait for a race weekend.
43:42It must be a surreal feeling for him as a driver,
43:46and all of them, to be on a Grand Prix weekend.
43:50I mean, from the start when they went to Australia where the fans,
43:54absolutely, you know, they get so much support.
43:56At that circuit, when they get in for the first time,
43:59and when you speak to drivers, they do say it's quite overwhelming
44:02to be within, one, within an F1 paddock,
44:06and two, to then go from, say, racing in Formula Regional
44:10to then racing in front of hundreds of thousands of fans.
44:13Yes.
44:14What the young drivers dream of.
44:15Let's not forget that all of these young drivers
44:18are fans of the sport.
44:19They've been in kart, and they've been watching this level,
44:21Formula Two, Formula One, since they were kids
44:23because they've aspired to it for so long.
44:25And drivers who have come from a completely different part of the world,
44:28like Taito Kato, Japanese driver,
44:30will have been looking at the Silverstone Grand Prix
44:32and Silverstone Circuit, being like, wow,
44:34wouldn't it be amazing to race there one day?
44:35As drivers from Europe and the UK, for example,
44:38will look over at Suzuka and be like, wow,
44:40wouldn't it be incredible to race over there?
44:41So, you know, it's my opinion that historic circuits
44:44and amazing race circuits like this and Suzuka and Spa,
44:47you know, should stay on the calendar for as long as possible
44:49because it really does infuse drivers and the future of the sport
44:53and has a certain je ne sais quoi about what it is to go racing,
44:58what it is to be a racing driver.
44:59And also, it's just amazing to see these cars
45:02at the absolute limit at some of the best circuits in the world.
45:04Yeah, it's one, like you said, that's been always on the calendar.
45:09Drivers would have watched their heroes,
45:12whoever they may be, racing around this circuit.
45:14Now they're getting to do that themselves.
45:16This is their only practice session,
45:18and then they go qualifying to set the grid for both races.
45:21If you need to Formula 3, welcome to you.
45:24In four rounds, we've had eight different winners so far.
45:28We had nine different winners at the start of 2024,
45:30so not unusual for a Formula 3 championship
45:34to provide such competitiveness.
45:36But we really have seen, up and down the field,
45:40a huge number of drivers showing the ability
45:43to be able to win races and take podiums.
45:46Yeah, no doubt.
45:47All drivers, apart from Tappanen on circuit at the moment,
45:49we saw that battery issue for Tappanen,
45:51meaning he won't be out on track.
45:52The reason all the drivers stayed out for this virtual safety car
45:56is not to practice their virtual safety car,
45:57so they need to be on circuit when the checker flag comes out
45:59to do their practice start,
46:00which they will all be heading round to the start-finish rate
46:03and the Hamilton straight to do that,
46:05because that practice start is an opportunity again for the drivers
46:08to gauge the grip of the circuit.
46:10Don't forget, last weekend we were on the Pirelli soft tyre,
46:12this weekend the Pirelli hard tyre,
46:13so in theory slightly less static grip,
46:16so they'll have to adjust their clutch release
46:18and their throttle application to make sure
46:20that they get the most out of the car and away,
46:23because qualifying well is one thing,
46:25but then if you absolutely mess up the start,
46:28then you're going to be falling backwards
46:31and undo all that hard work and vice versa.
46:34If you can nail the start,
46:35you can jump a row and gain a few places
46:37and get yourself in a position to continue to push forward
46:39in both races.
46:41Let's talk about the start around here,
46:43because it is two very quick corners, isn't it,
46:45and then into a heavy braking zone.
46:47Yeah, absolutely, and also the start here
46:49is slightly less critical in terms of the pull away.
46:51It's more about positioning through turns
46:53two, three, four, and five.
46:55Well, good news for the home fans
46:57is Freddie Slater is quick out of the blocks
46:59and has gone fastest with a 146.161,
47:03and Nesta Rivera continuing to show his good pace in second,
47:06Matteo Di Paolo will be very pleased with third,
47:09Van Amersfoor quick once again,
47:11Yamakoshi, De Ligny, fourth and fifth,
47:13and Niall, Finn McLaughlin,
47:14and that's a really great performance for him in seventh.
47:17Hugo Gachukui, Noah Strongstead Knight,
47:19Louis Sharp in the top 10.
47:21Top 12, Jin Nakamura,
47:22Yevon David will hope to repeat that,
47:25get himself a sprint race pole.
47:26Giusti, third team,
47:28then Kornagi, Wharton,
47:29Lakorte, Del Pino,
47:31Gwadish, Biron Bhakti,
47:33and Jose Garfias.
47:35Definitely Yevon David,
47:36one of the standout performers there for AIX Racing,
47:40filling himself right up there.
47:41Jin Nakamura could be one to watch
47:43for home team high-tech as well.
47:45Podium last time out.
47:47Taito Kato,
47:48great pace for him this season.
47:50He is ahead of Gerard Shee.
47:52Rodin's Brando Badouer
47:53will be looking to get his season back on form.
47:55Tapanen didn't complete all the session.
47:58Then Lee,
47:58Shin,
47:59Klero,
47:59Escoto,
48:00Barrichello,
48:01Christian Ho,
48:02round out your field.
48:04That is all for the one and only practice session as ever.
48:08As drivers get ready to do their practice starts,
48:10they will set the order for how they will line up on that very grid
48:14in qualifying at two o'clock local time here at Silverstone.
48:19And make sure you join us for all the action for now.
48:22For myself,
48:23Chris McCarthy,
48:23Piers Briar.
48:24It's goodbye.
48:26Good bye.
