00:02En route to a marine reserve, to use new artificial intelligence technology similar to facial recognition or fingerprint technology, but
00:13for lobsters.
00:14We've used AI machine learning to look at the features on the shell of the lobster and amazingly we've been
00:21able to show that this technology can pick up those features and they're individual for a lobster.
00:26In time the idea is consumers will be able to take a photo of their dinner and know exactly where
00:33it came from.
00:35This lobster won in a database of thousands from across Australia and New Zealand.
00:41We've got a recapture.
00:43The team has reeled in 30 pots here today. Of the 108 lobsters only 6 were AI recaptures and the
00:50technology recognised all of them.
00:52The scientists have taken photos of the new lobsters which will feed into their database.
00:58That means next time they're out here on the waters, the AI will be able to recognise those lobsters too.
01:04Physical tags can be removed or forged and there's money to be made from branding a foreign lobster as prized
01:11southern rock lobster.
01:13This exporter hopes the AI could help break into new markets like the European Union and strengthen trust in existing
01:20ones.
01:21I think giving some of those restauranteurs overseas the confidence that this is guaranteed to come from here will put
01:29the lobster on plates that it's currently not on.
01:31Eventually if commercial and recreational fishers and even citizen scientists adopt the technology it could mean much more data to
01:39inform management decisions.
01:41It may not necessarily change the catch limits but it will give us more assurance that our recommendations to government
01:48are accurate and the catch is sustainable.
01:51It will be under the любNoble.
