Leeds students got a rare chance to visit the Roundhay Festival site during set-up and meet the team involved in staging the festival while learning about the events industry.
Transcript
00:00It's great being here in Leeds and in Roundhay and one thing that really is evident is how passionate the
00:06community is about the park.
00:08It's clearly the heart of the Roundhay community and it's a real honour to be here delivering an event for
00:13AEG within the park.
00:15So I'm the project director from LS Events, we're the event management company that are looking after that for AEG.
00:21We reached out to Leeds Becket, Leeds University and Roundhay School because we wanted that opportunity for their students to
00:28come along to the event,
00:29to see a build in progress so they could understand what's involved in delivering an event.
00:34All too often people think about working in events and festivals as being artist management or being a performer, being
00:39on stage.
00:40There's so much more to it and we wanted them to understand the breadth of those opportunities.
00:44I didn't expect it to be as big as it was. I hadn't really heard of it before at all
00:48or any idea this was even happening at the weekend.
00:51But to see it kind of planned and put together and kind of be able to vision it and see
00:56it was really cool.
00:57It was really interesting because I've never seen like behind the scenes of like a festival before.
01:00I've been to a few festivals and I'm actually going to this one, like I've booked it, so it was
01:03really interesting.
01:04Yeah, I think that I thought when I was told at the tour, I thought it'd be like a very
01:08traditional just walk around and have a conversation.
01:11But we really got to like be involved and see it like up close and personal, which is really cool.
01:16Yeah, it was really, really interesting because we got to see like underneath the stage and I've never seen like
01:20underneath the stage before, which is really interesting.
01:22Yeah, since October, I have been meeting with, speaking with lots of the residents, the businesses and the park stakeholders.
01:30And as a local myself, I'm very passionate about the event.
01:34My phone and my keyboard have been on fire with lots of questions and inquiries, which hopefully I've been able
01:41to answer.
01:42And it's building up to be very busy, sunny as the sun comes out and fun event.
01:49Who knows with the great British summer, but hopefully there'll be some sunshine.
01:52We've got the trees, so we've got the coverage for that.
01:54It's a beautiful undulating site with absolutely amazing views of the stage.
01:59The stage looks fantastic, I think, in the location that we've got it.
02:02We've got massive video wraps to go around that stage.
02:06We've got a grandstand for the sort of uplift of ticket seating.
02:09The beautiful Hill 60 as well, where people can sit and watch the concerts as well.
02:14I'm a big fan of music. I really do like it.
02:17And I think seeing behind the scenes of stuff is so interesting.
02:20So it was kind of a no brainer to kind of join this.
02:22Yeah, I'm the same. I did travel and tourism at college and then I decided to do it at uni
02:26as well.
02:27But I took a year out first and did some work.
02:29But, yeah, I wanted to come because I was interested. I wanted to see.
02:32I wanted to know what was happening.
02:33All of the locals have been coming up really curious about what's happening
02:37and asking lots of questions.
02:39My role really on the community side has been sort of to deal with any inquiries,
02:44any worries, any concerns, and just making sure that everyone feels reassured
02:48that, you know, they'll still be able to access their home, their business,
02:51you know, go about their daily life.
02:52As soon as I came here, I could just feel what a great place it was going to be for
02:57an event.
02:58It's got a good energy.
02:58Okay.
02:59All right.
