00:02Tarrago and the surrounding areas are home to tranquil rolling hills, but its residents are angry.
00:09Regional communities like ours have been treated as second-class citizens to Sydney.
00:14For decades, Tarrago's bioreactor and landfill facility has dealt with 40% of Sydney's rubbish and the stench that comes
00:22with it.
00:23Now they face a proposal for a waste-to-energy facility, or what locals describe as a rubbish incinerator.
00:30There's a real worry that testing both now and in the future may reveal contamination of land.
00:37And that's our primary concern, is the health and wellbeing of the community and the viability of our agriculture.
00:43They found support in Sydney, with the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry recommending the facility should not receive approval.
00:50In the absence of numerous critical elements, but most significantly social licence.
00:56The inquiry raised issues with the impact on agriculture and significant environmental concerns.
01:02The potential health impacts with no long-term data, because of course infrastructure of this scale doesn't exist on the
01:10eastern seaboard in NSW.
01:12It's called for a moratorium on such facilities across the state, and a review into why only regional sites have
01:18been picked to house them.
01:19The NSW Government now has 90 days to consider the inquiry's recommendations.
01:25Locals are encouraged by the findings, but are well aware their battle isn't over.
01:30We don't expect that this is the end of the matter at all, but be assured that we will be
01:36fighting this for as long as it takes.
01:40For such a peaceful area, it remains a burning issue.
