00:00It was one of the most consequential days of the year at the Supreme Court, with the justices handing down
00:04a series of decisions, some good, some not so good for President Trump.
00:08The president scored a significant victory when the court ruled 6-3 that states can bar transgender athletes from competing
00:14in girls' and women's sports, finding that both the Constitution and Title IX allow states to separate athletic teams based
00:20on biological sex.
00:21Trump celebrated the ruling, calling it a big win and saying it takes the issue of, quote, men playing in
00:26women's sports off the table.
00:28He didn't get to run a full victory lap, though, because just minutes later, in a 6-3 decision not
00:33split along ideological lines, the court struck down Trump's executive order ending birthright citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants.
00:40Five of the justices ruled that the 14th Amendment protects those children and that changing it would require more than
00:47a presidential order.
00:48And the sixth, Justice Brett Kavanaugh, didn't agree with that opinion but ruled that the executive order violated federal law.
00:55Justices Alito, Thomas, and Gorsuch dissented.
00:57Trump blasted that decision as, quote, bad for our country and urged Congress to take up legislation addressing birthright citizenship.
01:04And those were just two of the headline-making opinions.
01:07There was another pivotal ruling that will impact the midterms, likely in the GOP's favor.
01:11And I'll have more on that with The Post's political reporter, Ryan King, a little later.
01:15Sticking with D.C., after nearly four months AWOL from Capitol Hill, New Jersey Congressman Tom Kane Jr. is finally
01:22explaining where he's been.
01:24The Republican lawmaker returned to the House floor Tuesday and revealed that he'd been hospitalized and treated for depression.
01:30I entered the hospital for some testing.
01:33I did not believe that this would result in a long-term stay.
01:37I was given the diagnosis of depression.
01:40And until you experience it yourself, it is difficult to fully understand how powerful this illness can be.
01:48The doctors recommended that I remain in the hospital to address my illness.
01:53They explained to me that this would be the fastest way to recovery.
01:57The 57-year-old later realized there is no set timeline for recovery.
02:01He told colleagues that he is grateful that he followed his doctor's advice and accepted help, saying he now returns
02:06to Congress, quote,
02:07healthier, stronger, and excited to return to the work that I love.
02:10Kane hadn't cast a vote since early March, missing more than 140 roll call votes as questions swirled about his
02:16absence.
02:17President Trump says the Republican Party is about to make history.
02:20For the first time ever, the GOP will hold a national convention for the midterms.
02:24Dallas, Texas, will have the honor of hosting the two-day event on September 9th and 10th.
02:28The unusual gathering is designed to build momentum heading into November's midterm elections and comes as Republicans look to expand
02:35their majorities in Congress.
02:36On Truth Social, Trump called the event a truly historic celebration of what he described as the great American comeback.
02:42The president said the convention will highlight his America First agenda, including no tax on tips, no tax on overtime,
02:48stronger borders, lower costs, American energy dominance, and what he called the country's golden age.
02:53Trump also promised appearances by entrepreneurs, manufacturers, first responders, and he said lots of great entertainment, calling it a rally
03:00like none other.
03:01And Texas is an interesting choice, given the importance of the midterms in the Lone Star State.
03:05State Attorney General Ken Paxton is locked in a high-stakes Senate race against James Tallarico, and the state is
03:11also expected to gain additional Republican-leaning House seats through redistricting.
