00:00The Supreme Court seems likely to expand the power of the president over independent federal
00:04agencies. Monday's oral arguments stemming from President Trump's attempt to fire Federal Trade
00:10Commission member Rebecca Slaughter could result in overturning a 90-year-old precedent.
00:15The original ruling placed limitations around when presidents can fire independent agency board
00:20members, and the court's conservative majority seem to suggest that they're ready to get rid of
00:25it. In fact, Chief Justice John Roberts called the older ruling a, quote, dry husk, apparently meaning
00:32it wasn't relevant anymore. This would seem like great news for the president, but even if they
00:36decide this case in his favor, the impact may not be as sweeping as he'd like. The justices signaled
00:43that they will look at the Federal Reserve differently. You see, this isn't just about the
00:47FTC. Overturning this ruling could pave the way for Trump or any president after him to make some big
00:53changes. Specifically, in the case of President Trump, he also wants to fire Federal Reserve
00:58Governor Lisa Cook. The thing is, that move could have negative economic impacts, and the court seemed
01:04to be a little more cautious when it came to that. Now, SCOTUS will hear separate arguments about that
01:09Federal Reserve case in January, and a ruling on this case is expected in June.
