00:00It's being called the Mamdani Effect as New York City Mayor Zohron Mamdani helped propel a slate
00:06of candidates in Tuesday's primary elections. But how widespread is the impact? The results
00:11have the chance to double the number of Democratic Socialists in Congress as voters in New York's
00:177th and 13th congressional districts nominated members from the organization. In a predominantly
00:22blue city, the winners of these primaries are heavily favored in the general election.
00:27One of the Mamdani-backed candidates ousted five-term incumbent Adriano Espiat, the current
00:32chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and he wasn't the only incumbent to fall.
00:37Congressman Dan Goldman, who has one of the most liberal voting records in the House,
00:41lost his bid for re-election in New York's 10th congressional district to former mayoral
00:46candidate Brad Lander, who had Mamdani's backing. The contest exposed both the ideological and
00:51generational rifts within the Democratic Party, as House leaders such as New York's
00:56Hakeem Jeffries saw some of their preferred candidates lose. The results will no doubt
01:00add fuel to the conversation here in Washington about a shift to left-wing populism. Still,
01:06strategists say these winners could be more outliers than the norm, as Democrats seek to flip the
01:11chamber come November. Other contests, such as in New York's 12th district, saw a candidate with
01:15links across establishment politics, Michael Lasher, emerge from a crowded field and beat back more
01:21progressive challengers. Lasher is a former aide to Michael Bloomberg and was endorsed by the
01:26former mayor and owner of Bloomberg LP.
