00:01Former Indonesian education minister and Gojek founder Nadia Makarem was sentenced on Tuesday to 10 years in prison over a
00:10school laptop procurement program during the COVID-19 pandemic, ending one of the country's most high-profile corruption trials.
00:17He was also fined 1 billion rupiah and ordered to pay 809.6 billion rupiah in restitution. Failure to pay
00:27will result in an additional five-year prison term. The ruling marks a dramatic fall for the Harvard-educated tech
00:33entrepreneur once seen as part of a new generation of Indonesian political leaders.
00:38Delivering the verdict, Chief Judge Perwanto said the Jakarta Corruption Court found Nadiem guilty because the policy constituted abuse of
00:47authority intended to unlawfully benefit certain parties.
00:51The court said he had consciously and intentionally directed the Chromebook procurement policy and acted to strengthen strategic business relations
01:00between Google and the corporation he founded.
01:02Judges also described the motive as highly reprehensible and contrary to the oath of office.
01:09Nadiem maintained his innocence throughout the trial and sought a full acquittal in his closing submission in June 2026.
01:16I believe I will continue to fight for my children, for my family, for my family, for all countries of
01:29Indonesia that I still love.
01:32I will fight. I will fight. I will immediately follow the high-tech resistance for the jury.
01:42Prosecutors had sought an 18-year sentence, a 1 billion rupiah fine and 5.6 trillion rupiah
01:48in restitution, alleging state losses of about 2.18 trillion rupiah and personal gains of around
01:55809 billion rupiah through P.T. Applicasi Karia Anakbangsa, Gojek's parent company.
02:02They also alleged Google's investment influenced the procurement decision,
02:06a claim Nadiem denied. Google was not charged. The case drew widespread attention,
02:13with dozens of Gojek drivers attending court hearings in a show of solidarity.
