00:15talk to our
00:16friend joe shasky host of the morning roast on 95.7 the fan 95.7 the game pardon me in
00:22san francisco
00:23joe what's up dude how you been what's up guys it's a beautiful san francisco day i'm just
00:28walking back to the car i love it man weirdly our two cities seem uh intertwined on a number of
00:36sports right now um you wanted to start football you want to start basketball i don't know which
00:41dumpster fire smells worse i think the ba one's worse yes so we'll start there um oh my gosh what
00:50the hell happened with brandon iuke and the organization that's the number one question
00:56i don't know i don't know i legitimately don't know so here's the thing from the day he got
01:02drafted it just felt like he felt like he was an outsider on the outside looking in of the team
01:09culture right and i don't know how accurate that is but that was always the feeling that i got they've
01:14had a click on the team but the core guys bebo print williams joined the team he became part of
01:20the click obviously at one time it was jimmy garoppolo um now it's brock purdy george kittle
01:25fred warner and for whatever reason all those guys got paid there wasn't any problems but when the
01:31iuke situation happened they had already paid bebo samuel and it just felt like they were trying to
01:37hold the line after essentially caving in on nick bosa and caving in on other contract extensions like
01:44christian mccaffrey and frent williams and for whatever reason they said no no no on this one
01:49brandon iuke we're going to hold the line we are not going to extend him um right away and we're
01:53going to fight this tooth and nail and it just felt like ever since that moment there's been
01:58some sort of frustration within the 49ers that they overpaid brandon iuke and it's like guys
02:04you were with them for four years you knew who he was before you signed them you offered him 78
02:10million in guarantees like why all of a sudden the change of mind it it doesn't make a lot of
02:16sense to
02:16me quite frankly but they did pay him right yes yes and two receivers that were going to be on
02:23the
02:23books for 65 million dollars a year on a run first team it doesn't make a lot of sense guys
02:28on a kyle
02:29shanahan run first team where you know who the number one wide out is do you know the number one
02:34like target is in the office the open man okay you know it's the open man it's it's it's well
02:40yes
02:40mccaffrey last year but i'm saying like it could be george kittle it could be juwan jenny
02:45it could be kendrick born on a thursday night against the rams like it really just depends on
02:50what the game plan is he's very belichickian in the way that he adjusts his scheme based on
02:55attacking what he thinks your weakness is it feels like everybody out here wants to go to one extreme
03:00or the other if you're team iuke you want to blame everything on the niners if you're you know
03:04team you don't want to sign him you're blaming everything on iuke but i'm curious out there
03:08what's the sense on who does i mean both sides are to blame that's what we were talking about
03:12earlier but from your sense out there what does it feel like the the blame ply is here how much
03:17is the niners how much is iuke so i have this whole theory called the high chart of probability right
03:22and there's a slice for iuke definitely it depends on how big of a slice you want to allocate and
03:28then
03:28there's clearly a slice on the 49ers i'm probably in the middle of this in the sense of i blame
03:34both
03:34parties they knew who each other were before they ended up getting married they were together a long
03:39time they had their own reservations on both ends of it and why they didn't execute a trade
03:44on draft night is beyond me why they didn't execute a trade in training camp is beyond me this is
03:51before
03:51he got his extension and why all of a sudden after he signs the deal they're questioning whether he
03:56really wanted to play football or not it's just wild to me they didn't ask the same questions when
04:02nick bosa signed four days before the season started or trent williams did the exact same thing and
04:07signed four days before the season started why are you like that tells me that you never really
04:12wanted to sign him in the first place but i also i'm not convinced right i never really wanted to
04:17stay here prior to signing that big extension i think he was so angry about how he got targeted in
04:24that super bowl and and just a lot of other things leading up to it he just never got over
04:29it and i just
04:30feel like the emotions of this entire thing have gotten in the way and now why are they holding on
04:34to
04:35them now i keep thinking about this the niners have been running business for a long time all right
04:39i think that the reason that they're doing this maybe there's some petty aspects to it i have to
04:44believe though that there are specifics with the cda the players union and things they can and can't do
04:52to be able to recruit certain money that's the only thing i can surmise based on all of this they're
04:58not just going to keep him because they're mad at him that's not what they're going to do like i
05:02just
05:02i i think too high a john lynch is a person to do that that's my personal opinion yeah i
05:08i think
05:08it's interesting especially with the mayoko report i'm sure you know matt he's a great reporter oh yeah
05:13great guy that yeah he's great that they're going after more cash like that's why you keep him and
05:18string him along um do you think i don't know that it's real i'm and i've said this repeatedly i've
05:26never met what part the desire to play football or was it just a desire to not play football for
05:32the niners here's what i'd say to you this i went to training camp not last year the uh yes
05:38it was
05:38last year before before um uh he ended up getting we got announced in like october november that the
05:45money been taken away we went to the joint practices against the denver broncos okay
05:51crail williams is yucking it up with the denver broncos and he's in street clothes on the sideline
05:56brandon iuk is in i don't know like a hoodie and a sweatpants he was chomping at the bit to
06:02get out
06:03on that field i'm watching a guy and i'm thinking man he looks like he is ready to play now
06:07he wasn't
06:08allowed to run routes and stuff he had the football in his hand and you could just tell he was
06:12so ready
06:13to get on that field no i think i've said it on your guys's airways before in prior training camps
06:18i came away thinking he was one of the best players on the field every single time i went
06:23there because he's such a competitor he would bark back at fred warner he was looking all of our dvs
06:29like he was a really great practice player not good great and i think you can make the argument he
06:33was
06:34the best training camp player in like at least two of the three or four training camps he was involved
06:38in but at that practice that i went to last year when he's recovering from the knee injury it looked
06:43like
06:43he was ready to play in terms of he was so locked in and engaged and that was the last
06:49i saw him
06:49i don't know what happened maybe he was informed later on that the money was getting taken away and
06:55i don't buy that he doesn't want to play football again like i i just i don't i don't know
07:00if i buy
07:01that i that to me is bizarre that's all i can say did he have many backers in the building
07:07it felt
07:07like kittle at least before had somewhat come to his defense and then we just saw the recent
07:12a clip from him on pardon my take basically telling pft commenter good luck with that when he
07:17uh it seems like inevitably comes to washington like did he even burn that bridge like is there
07:22anybody left over there that feels like any sympathy on his side i i don't know i i really don't
07:29know
07:29i i thought kyle shanahan was in his corner at one point i thought so why they paid him like
07:34i thought
07:35that he liked him he's the guy he can't selected in the draft i mean i i was under the
07:39assumption
07:39this was his guy even though in years past it was his second year in the league he was put
07:44in the
07:44doghouse and you know when they run these wide receiver drills he was like the eighth or ninth man
07:49in the line and he would go up against practice squad players and it felt like they were trying to
07:53send a message to him in year two but i thought that kyle had his back i i guess apparently
07:59not i i feel
08:01like this is one of the few contracts that the niners have signed where there was clear frustration
08:06and dissension in terms of some people wanted him some people didn't and the minute they signed it it
08:13was like immediate regret and my thing is like guys you were with him for four or five years prior
08:17like what how was their regret on this how are we not all aligned on this it's a lot of
08:22money he was
08:23going to be in terms of aav i mean he's going to be one of the highest paid players on
08:27the team
08:27outside of a quarterback so we better all be on the same page and wanting to give this guy a
08:31contract
08:32and then building an offense that you can actually value that money back meaning targeting him 12 to
08:3815 times the game if that's what you view him as a 30 million dollar a year wide receiver can
08:43i just
08:44yeah let me follow up one thing you said that you thought he looked like the best player on the
08:50field at training camp that was this past season right no 20 no he did not practice this past season
08:57okay i'm talking 2022 2023 okay um 2021 you know when they had trey lance and jimmy garoppolo
09:05thrown on the baby field um i mean he was an absolute dog and i mean that in the best
09:10of sense
09:11he was cooking everybody in these one-on-one seven-on-seven 11-on-11 drills i mean he's open
09:17all over the place jumping in the air catching passes going over the middle he's dude he's a great
09:23when he is locked in he's a great receiver immediate separation really good hands can can make
09:30contested catches he's not the greatest jump ball guy but he can make those plays he's very athletic
09:36he gets really good separation and in kyle's offense a yard or two of separation is wide open
09:42right i mean that's ultimately what you just described him as a receiver is why i think he
09:48ends up in washington yeah like if he can still play there's a spot for you somewhere in the nfl
09:52no matter how much craziness happens um it's the talent tolerance equation the pat riley you know
09:59if your talent outweighs your problems someone will have a spot for you the minute your problems outweigh
10:04your talent you're done right i bill parcells talking about coaching lt is like one of the things i
10:09always go back to like there were different rules for lt than there were for the rest of the team
10:13yeah um well i think i think you know let me stop you there i do think brandon feels that
10:18he had earned that level of respect meaning maybe i deserve different rules um and some of these other
10:26guys on this team get those and i don't that's just kind of like people that defend him you know
10:32my good buddy is grant cone who covers the 49ers and i know you guys have probably had him on
10:35the
10:35station yeah i think he's more in that camp and i don't know where i land down on it quite
10:39frankly
10:40because it's tough to know i'm not there every day it's so hard to know but i think that he
10:44thought
10:44that he could rehab away from the team because other guys on this team have done that and he
10:49thought he had earned that benefit of the doubt and clearly the niners disagreed with him on that
10:54one at least that's the argument others are presenting all right we are talking with joe shasky
10:59here host of the morning roast on 95 7 the game in san francisco really good insight into kind
11:05of the demise of the brandon iuke san francisco relationship um i want to switch to the other
11:11dc bay area sports story that's going nuts right now and that's the possibility you guys just
11:17you guys even want this guy like because i keep asking myself like if i was on the outside looking
11:22in like do it would i even want to invite this drama the older i get and when i was
11:26in my 20s
11:27i was like bring on team obliterators i don't care because i was a huge cl fan barry boss one
11:32of my
11:32players of all time i didn't care about chemistry and all those things i just wanted to see
11:36excellence the older i get now that i've got kids i've been coaching for 20 something years
11:41i'm like look man if you're talented you better be so freaking good for me to put up with you
11:46like and brandon was very good i'm not sure he's worth this headache i mean that's something that i
11:51think do you guys want it's interesting i mean obviously you know this gig hosting radio we open the
11:57phones and it's it's a big split there's a lot of people that want nothing to do with them there's
12:02a lot
12:02of people that absolutely want him i i maybe i'm in the minority here i think the videos from this
12:07past weekend actually explaining some of the issues with lynch with kyle with the union with the agent
12:13i feel like that maybe makes this make a little more sense you know what i mean like hearing kind
12:18of his side of the story for me if i was running this team and after they dealt with all
12:23the terry
12:24mclaurin nonsense last year and it was divisive and they had the training camp suffered because of it
12:28i'm not sure i would throw this wrench into a team that seems very cohesive being at minicamp
12:33and everything but talent right what'd you say talent talent i know like that i know if you if you
12:39think this dude can drop a thousand yards to catch seven touchdowns then that changes the equation i mean
12:44i feel like if he's healthy he's kind of the exact kind of receiver they need in this offense
12:48but yeah everybody can use a receiver like this yeah right like that's that's the thing like when he's
12:53healthy and he's right he's excellent he fits everyone's offense problem is is that you know
13:00how much you're gonna give them how many years how much is he gonna be happy you know like i
13:05who
13:06knows man yeah he's just was so good for us and it's just frustrating it's really frustrating i get
13:11that i'll tell you joe the the player i want from the bay area is yaxl lendenborg that's the player
13:18i want
13:19hell no that's my dog that's my dog he was my dog first i wanted i was calling for months
13:25leading
13:26up to the draft to trade ad to the warriors so you can take lendenborg now at least there seems
13:32like
13:32there is real discussion about anthony davis getting traded to the golden state warriors but what do you
13:38make of that how real does that seem to you and what would the comp be coming back to washington
13:44all right so i don't want to go surrender any picks straight up like i think warrior fans are
13:50in disagreement with me on this i've been a warrior fan before steph curry i'm gonna be a warrior fan
13:54after steph he's the greatest basketball player i've ever seen in my lifetime up close and personal
13:59okay that being said like you you can't exhaust every single draft pick for the future on a team that
14:07literally won the 9-10 play-in game and acted like they won a championship and got smoked by the
14:13phoenix suns in the very next game they didn't even make the playoffs steph played 37 games last
14:19year i love him he's an all-time player the time to trade everything for a player was three or
14:24four
14:25years ago not when he's 38 all right and so i don't want to surrender any future assets for brandon
14:31especially with the way the lottery set up now where you don't have to be the worst team in the
14:36league
14:36to actually get one of the top two ping pong balls you can be kind of in the middle of
14:40the bottom
14:41and have just as bit of a chance and so i don't want to sort of if it's jimmy butler
14:45for 80 straight
14:46up which i know washington will never do i would do that deal other than that like take a hike
14:51out
14:51it's like 20 games last year that's what he gives and he hates playing the five and our warriors what
14:58would he be playing the five why because draymond loves playing the four he doesn't want to play
15:03small ball five and so i mean like a strong dust of wind and anthony davis is on the ir
15:08i'm good off
15:09him so good off him i think warrior fans they're they're more out on the whole package which is
15:15lebron and anthony davis guys the only way i can explain this is that the warriors don't really have
15:21a true basketball team rival right you know celtics lakers giants dodgers you guys your washington
15:28team i almost said it uh versus the cowboys or the eagles right our number one enemy is lebron james
15:34it's lebron james we hate his guts more than anyone and so the thought of him joining the team
15:40and then bringing anthony davis is just it's too many steps for us we're like i'm i'm so out on
15:46that
15:46now you are clearly out on it and i understand why and i understand why not uh warriors fans would
15:52hate lebron especially from that one cleveland series but it seems what do you think the odds
15:58are of it happening is this ownership driven i don't know what i think it's steph curry driven
16:05and also the owner he loves big names i mean he loves big names and he wants to win the
16:11headlines
16:11um they want to have their cake and eat it too we love finishing second place for someone basically
16:17since durant came here they've been second place in terms of landing big time free agents
16:22whether it's paul george i mean just go right down the list they've tried to go for anyone now
16:27this would fit right into the hey go get cp3 after he's done kind of a deal where we did
16:33that with
16:33you guys with jordan pool is a horrible deal i don't know why they're doubling down on getting
16:37older the reality is and we're if they don't want to hear it it's over steph has been a generational
16:43player that generation is about at the end and i love him i don't want to see him get traded
16:48he should
16:48be a warrior for life you know but like the reality is you got to get younger
16:52okc and san antonio what do they got average lineups of 24 and a half years old they're not
16:58going anywhere and you're going to roll out al horford draymond green lebron james steph curry
17:04and like and anthony davis in this equation you're going to play what a combined 16 games together
17:09like that's that's delusional to me and then you're going to trade away future picks so that all these
17:14guys retire and i'm stuck left holding the bag and somebody else is executing my picks that's how
17:21like no i'm so out on that so yeah it's probably owner driven to sell tickets but
17:26like it's ridiculous i think it's a terrible decision anyway i found foolish if it's owner
17:31driven like how crazy could the package get like is there any chance that you know jimmy butler's
17:36coming back for the salary but then could it be two first round picks do you think there could
17:40be pick swaps is yaxl even on the table or is it something that there is still a tipping point
17:44where they wouldn't do it i have no idea i mean i really don't i think mike dunleavy is actually
17:50really smart he's the gm son of mike dunleavy senior who ran teams coached teams forever mike
17:55was a like a hated warrior player i mean we hated him we thought we were getting yao ming and
18:00instead
18:00we lost the lottery we got the number three pick we took mike dunleavy and he was literally booed as
18:04a player one of the most hated players ever he's a smart gm he makes some really screwed moves
18:10got us jimmy butler when no one else wanted him it worked out so he tore his acl so i
18:15like
18:16dunleavy i want to see him build the next team i don't know if he's going to be allowed to
18:21do so
18:22because of the owner if they trade away anything like i'm talking about any picks you would think
18:26washington would want to get back the two picks they surrendered right they gave up the 2026 and
18:31i believe a 2030 or 2033 pick and then they did some swaps you would think that's what they would
18:36want back we don't have any second round picks for a couple years not that anyone wants
18:40those so i don't know i here's the problem you acquire ad and you sign lebron at the mid-level
18:46you hard cap yourself at the first apron so any trade for ad where you're surrendering picks
18:52you can't move any picks and any assets for like four years in the new cba so you're like frozen
19:00in
19:00carbonite like han solo that's like the stupidest thing you can do in the modern nba the number one
19:05currency right now in the nba cap space and picks it's more valuable than even a max player it seems
19:11like look at these trades like everyone's attaching picks to get rid of bad contracts it's crazy
19:17all right so you clearly don't want it to happen but do you think it will happen
19:21no no not a chance in hell i think lebron is run by clutch graymon is run by clutch anthony
19:29davis is run
19:30by clutch they're all trying to leverage something so they could have a better situation for each of
19:35them lebron wants to go back to la i assume because i don't want any part of brawny i mean
19:39she's
19:39priming to get brawny james and then you got to have lebron wants to go back to la graymon wants
19:44more
19:45than 28 million he was set to make that he opted out so i think he's got 28 million or
19:50more over the
19:51next two or three years in his back pocket from someone um and i think anthony davis wants the hell
19:56out
19:57of washington you know anytime you can give trey young 220 million dollars you do it right i mean
20:02ridiculous it's just ridiculous but that's the way i would view anthony davis extension as well
20:08no one on the book yeah i hope anthony davis is wearing that i want yaxel and a first and
20:14we'll
20:15take i love that contract we had him on the station just last week the guy is an absolute
20:20stud i love everything about him i think he's going to be an excellent plug and play player
20:26we've had multiple four-year players obviously step was a three-year player we've had multiple
20:30four-year players they just come in more mature and ready to contribute um joe this has been great
20:35man thank you very much for the time brother thanks joe hey uh tj ushmanzada said that if adam
20:41peter signs brandon iuk he should be fired wow that's pretty wild that is you guys have a great day
20:47thank you buddy all right joe shasky give him a follow on twitter at butcher boy 415
