00:02Completely conflicting narratives basically by the University on one hand and the academics
00:06and their union on the other. Macquarie University said it was forced to pursue just over 60
00:12redundancies last year, most of them voluntary across its faculties of Arts and Engineering
00:17with nine of them forced. Basically it said that it was a really unpleasant thing to have
00:22to do but that the process was rigorous and fair and the academics were assessed against
00:27their colleagues to decide who would lose their jobs. On the other hand, two of those nine
00:32academics who lost their jobs as well as their union paint a more sinister portrait. They allege
00:37those two members were targeted for redundancy in what would be an illegal breach of their rights
00:42because of their union activity and related advocacy. Both academics sought internal reviews
00:49of the decision and it did find in their favour and it said that the University didn't run a fair
00:55and proper process and that there were concerns with the way in which they lost their jobs.
00:59In response the University told me that it did carefully consider those findings but ultimately
01:04disagreed with them and decided the redundancies would proceed as planned and both women had their
01:10last days earlier this month. They've decided they aren't going to give up the fight though and
01:14with the financial backing of their union they're launching Fair Work Commission action trying to have
01:19their jobs reinstated and ultimately this could end up all the way to the federal court.
01:23So we're on to go with the Dr. Dr. Weehn.
