The national tertiary education union has said the details of a secret draft audit report of the Australian National University - aired by four corners - vindicated its calls for a clear out of the ANU's appointed council members. And while the university insisted it's committed to transparency and involuntary redundancies were at an end - staff and students argued the effects of the controversial renew ANU cost-cutting program were still being felt.

00:02Unions claim the back down on dismantling the School of Music and an end to involuntary
00:07redundancies as wins, but students are still feeling the effects.
00:11I still have some pretty large tutorial sizes and some of my conveners complaining about
00:17the lack of tutors available.
00:19We've had these classes that have been shortened. We have 60 people in tutorials, even 90 instead
00:24of 30 or the regular class sizes.
00:27Students are seeing the impacts of renew ANU in person, they're seeing smaller class options,
00:34they're seeing courses being cut, they're seeing course conveners that they once had
00:37being gone from the university.
00:39Last night the ABC's Four Corners program revealed a draft report by the Australian National Audit
00:45Office found the ANU's $250 million cost cutting program was approved without clear evidence
00:52it was needed.
00:53They're claiming to be running a deficit, they're claiming to have a financial crisis, the
00:57audited accounts show that's not the case.
00:59We welcome the vindication that is apparently there in the draft report from the ANAO, but
01:04what would have been nicer than vindication is not having hundreds of people go through
01:08the process of having their careers destroyed.
01:10In a statement an ANU spokesperson said the university can't comment on the report until
01:15it's tabled in parliament, but that the ANU would approach the findings openly and respond
01:20in a decisive, transparent and accountable way.
01:23That's cold comfort for the staff union.
01:26They should put a broom through all of the members, the appointed members of ANU council,
01:31there needs to be change in that body.
01:33Some students want more funding for the sector.
01:36There is governance and there is funding and those two things are combining together to create
01:40the crisis that we are seeing at ANU, UTS, University of Wollongong.
01:43I think that's something that governments need to play a real role in addressing.
01:47The ANU will launch its new strategy in August.
01:50p.m., they also want to implement an exam.
