00:00Firing of Rob Thompson today was really not unexpected.
00:03The Phillies are off to a horrendous start, 9-19.
00:06They have the worst run differential in baseball.
00:09I'm not there, so I don't see them daily like I see the Mets,
00:12but you could see on the highlights so many mistakes.
00:15It just did not look like a Phillies team that we are used to seeing.
00:18Rob Thompson had a terrific tenure there, started in 2022.
00:22They were 22-29 when he was hired to replace Joe Girardi.
00:27He did a terrific job that year getting them to the World Series,
00:31getting them to the playoffs in subsequent years.
00:33This year it just wasn't working for whatever reason,
00:35and they had an obvious answer as an interim manager in Don Mattingly,
00:39who'd managed previously in L.A., managed previously in Miami,
00:44and at this point it didn't feel that wrong.
00:48I'd never like to see anybody lose their job.
00:50I love Rob Thompson.
00:51I think overall he did a terrific job, but I think at this point
00:55it probably made sense for the Phillies to make a change.
00:58Does that mean it makes sense for the Mets to make a change?
01:01No, not necessarily.
01:02They're a different situation.
01:04The Mets right now look like a terrible team because they cannot hit.
01:08That is on the general manager, not on the manager.
01:12They are last in OPS, last in slugging, last in on-base, last in runs.
01:17They are just not hitting.
01:18So they are not a good team because they don't have the talent to do it.
01:22I mean, I do think they're a little better than this.
01:24I do think they're underachieving to some degree,
01:26and you could say that's on the manager to a degree,
01:29but this is not Carlos Mendoza's fault,
01:32and he should be able to keep his job for the foreseeable future.
01:35That's my opinion anyway.
