00:00I'm happy about that scene because, you know, I never drink.
00:03Like, I don't tolerate alcohol, drugs, nothing.
00:05I don't. I can't.
00:07Me neither.
00:07For some reason, I can't.
00:09Hi, I'm Seth Rogen.
00:12Hello, I'm Penelope Cruz.
00:13We have both filmed in some pretty amazing places.
00:16We'll see who remembers these places the best.
00:18Let's see.
00:23Is that...
00:24Is that super bad?
00:26Yes, it is. Maybe?
00:27There you go.
00:28And that's...
00:31Is that a restaurant that was by the airport?
00:34It's a restaurant. It's called the Buggy...
00:36Yeah, the Buggy Whip or something like that.
00:40Correct.
00:41Which was kind of a staple restaurant by the airport on La Tierra, I think, maybe?
00:48La Tierra!
00:50Yeah, it was on La Tierra.
00:51It was like a big Western-themed bar that was sort of near LAX.
00:56And for a long time after we shot there, there was a big, huge sign on the front of it
01:02that said,
01:02this is where they shot super bad, and it was in huge letters.
01:06Clearly, that didn't help because it's gone now.
01:13We might have doomed it.
01:16The bullets start flying, hit the deck.
01:18It was me and Bill Hader and an actor named Clem.
01:22Excuse me, sir! Stop what you were doing at once!
01:25It was very funny, who I also worked with on Freaks and Geeks, actually, and Crispin Floss.
01:31And then we shot a big scene in the bar where we're improvising and drinking with McLovin and telling him
01:36stories.
01:37I remember Bill improvising about being like a divorced guy.
01:40My first wife, who is a whore, by the way, where do you think I met her?
01:45A bar.
01:46A bar.
01:48What's this bar?
01:49What's this bar?
01:50What's funny is we filmed super bad in LA, but the movie's not set in LA.
01:54It's set in sort of a nondescript place, like, and it was very much meant to be sort of like
01:59any town USA.
02:01And, you know, when there's cop cars and stuff like that, you have to, and bus, you have to, like,
02:04put something on the side of them, like what city it is.
02:07So, I remember we put Clark County on it.
02:12Oh.
02:14Is that a hotel in LA where we shot Blow?
02:17That's exactly what it is.
02:20I remember.
02:21That was the place where Johnny and I found each other after meeting in the party.
02:26Just saying, hi, how are you? Nice to meet you.
02:29And then we would meet there and kiss.
02:31That's the place, right?
02:32That is the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
02:36What do you remember about shooting this scene?
02:37What I just told you?
02:39Breaking up a Colombian marriage was a serious thing.
02:42A lot of people are pissed off.
02:44I saw Ted Demme at a hotel and he told me,
02:47I was just about to send you a script of a movie that I'm doing with Johnny Depp.
02:51And I remember when I spoke no English and I would go to some of those talk shows for my
02:57first couple of films
02:58and they would ask me anything, any question I would answer.
03:01Like the only lines that I knew were like, I want to work with Johnny Depp and something else.
03:06So I told Teddy that story because I really, really wanted to work with him and I loved making that
03:12movie.
03:13The set of that movie was crazy.
03:15Oh, yeah.
03:15Crazy, crazy, crazy to a point where I could never share the stories that went on through that process.
03:24That sounds fun.
03:25Incredible.
03:26It's like, I cannot talk about it in an interview.
03:29No, that says a lot though.
03:31But I can tell you later.
03:32Yeah, please do.
03:34Take it easy.
03:35Martha, take it easy.
03:36Why?
03:36Everything felt like a party.
03:38Like from seven in the morning, all day, everything felt like the energy was so high.
03:42The adrenaline.
03:43And the movie needed that.
03:45What I remember is that I was completely exhausted by the end of the shooting,
03:48after two months of that adrenaline.
03:52I was completely exhausted, but I was also very happy to be part of that film.
03:57And I miss Teddy so much.
03:59Great film.
04:00He's not going to lose with this one.
04:02No, I know.
04:02I know this one.
04:04It's not losing.
04:05Look, it's so easy.
04:06That's the studio.
04:08And that's a house in Los Angeles designed by John Lautner, who's a very brilliant architect,
04:12and a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, who is also kind of a part of the show narratively.
04:17We got very lucky this day.
04:19That was me and Catherine O'Hara in the scene.
04:22You'll make a great studio hit.
04:25I knew it was an incredible episode.
04:27It was great, and it's obviously very sad now to think about it in a lot of ways,
04:31but this was actually her first day of shooting on the show, and we were all very nervous,
04:35honestly, and excited, and just kind of make the show, like, good enough for her to be on it.
04:42Zero margin for error on this shot.
04:43Meet her standards that we kind of were projecting onto her just as being fans of hers.
04:48And it was a great day, and she was so nice.
04:50And it was raining pretty much all day, and we shoot the show in these long continuous takes,
04:55which is a real nightmare often, but what it gives you is every once in a while something like that
04:59happens,
04:59which is like the sky kind of opened up, and there was a real rainbow that formed kind of over
05:03downtown,
05:04and this spectacular view, and the house is very graphic.
05:08And what's funny is that palm trees actually, like, in the backyard of the house below this house.
05:13And it really looks like a UFO.
05:15It sort of looks like a spaceship.
05:16Yeah, it has like a weird kind of curved roof.
05:18And on the inside, it's one of the most spectacular houses I've ever been in.
05:21And we really knew we wanted to try to shoot in John Lautner homes if possible.
05:25He designed the house that's in Lethal Weapon 2.
05:28It's called the Garcia House.
05:30It's very famous semi, like, it kind of has a giant arch over it, and it's on stilts.
05:34And in the end of Lethal Weapon 2, Mel Gibson ties a rope to the bottom with his chalk and
05:39yanks the stilts out.
05:41And it looks like it's collapsed down the hillside.
05:43And then I kind of became really obsessed with John Lautner's architecture.
05:47You've been to this place, or at least your character that you have played in a thing has been to
05:52this place.
05:53Oh!
05:55So, Pirates?
05:58Pirates 4.
05:59Pirates of the Caribbean on Stranger Tides.
06:02Well, that's, that's, that's Hawaii.
06:04Hawaii!
06:06Was it, what was it like shooting in Hawaii?
06:08Did you shoot in Hawaii?
06:09Yeah, we shot there, like, three months.
06:11Oh, wow.
06:12Was that fun?
06:12And most of the time we were in Kauai.
06:14So beautiful.
06:15I was pregnant.
06:16Wait.
06:19I am with child.
06:22Yours.
06:23First, I told Johnny, because we were already friends.
06:26And he said, do you want to do the movie?
06:28And I said, yes.
06:29When we started, it was like a month and a half, two months.
06:32And by the end of the movie, my belly was day to day.
06:35And the costume designer, Penny, who is a lovely woman, had so much patience with me.
06:41But every week she had to redo the whole corset and the, like some, the pants, like so many things
06:48kept changing every single week.
06:50Six months of shooting while you are pregnant.
06:53Hold here to that side.
06:54And Rob would tell me, you have to jump, like a step this high.
06:57And I would say, no, that's too scary.
07:01I can't do it.
07:01Call the double.
07:04Except for one of the fights on the boat, I did it myself because I had trained so much for
07:09that, that I felt completely safe to do it.
07:12Yeah.
07:12But everything else with a double.
07:14We are at a disadvantage.
07:16And they were amazing with me and I love them so much because they proved to me, I already know,
07:22but they really showed what kind of people they are.
07:25Keep the pregnant working.
07:30Whoa.
07:30Do you remember?
07:31Do I remember? Oh, it's Freaks and Geeks.
07:34It is from Freaks and Geeks.
07:38And I remember shooting that in the valley somewhere, I think.
07:42And that was my romantic interest, which was a girl who played the tuba.
07:46And we called her tuba girl on the show.
07:47Yeah.
07:48It was, I was, I was 16 or 17 years old.
07:52It was a very long time ago.
07:54The location?
07:55The location.
07:56We shot it deep in, I believe we would shoot these scenes in Santa Clarita.
08:01Santa Clarita.
08:03The lovely Santa Clarita.
08:05It's beautiful there.
08:06It's in the valley.
08:08There was a high school in Santa Clarita that we would shoot a lot of the exterior scenes of Freaks
08:13and Geeks at.
08:15It has sort of a northeastern look to it, I guess.
08:18And it was weird shooting at a real high school when we were shooting fake high school stuff.
08:23And the high school kids always looked at us.
08:24They would always ask, what's the show called?
08:26And I'd say Freaks and Geeks.
08:27And they'd say, that sounds stupid.
08:30I know what this is.
08:31Oh.
08:33That's me.
08:35The invite.
08:36This is the invite.
08:36San Francisco.
08:37San Francisco.
08:38My friend here.
08:40It me.
08:41I look best in this size in the frame, I think.
08:46It's so beautiful.
08:47I remember the whole crew, we were just standing on the street just being like, this is one of the
08:51most amazing things that you get to do in your life is take over the streets of San Francisco and
08:56hang out and shoot.
08:58It was so lovely out.
08:59And we shot on the subway with real commuters who were very confused by what was happening, but ultimately very
09:05accommodating.
09:06Yeah.
09:06She's so pretty.
09:08She's so pretty.
09:10The scene where both characters are high.
09:12Yeah.
09:12And I actually don't understand.
09:14When I watch it, I feel like I'm happy about that scene because, you know, I never drink.
09:18Like, I don't tolerate alcohol, drugs, nothing.
09:21I don't.
09:21I can't.
09:22Me neither.
09:22I can't.
09:25Sorry that I'm laughing.
09:26I don't know why I'm laughing.
09:28So I managed to really, really feel that high, but drinking water because I never drink anything else.
09:37I could not stop.
09:39Like, it took me hours to get out of that state that we just created by looking at each other.
09:45I just could not stop.
09:47And I have so many great memories from that room.
09:49And then we had the dance.
09:51John, put on some music.
09:52What kind of music are you into, Hawk?
09:54What is Sade?
09:55Sade.
09:57Of Sade's song.
09:58The dance of Sade.
09:59Where I'm, like, singing to him and dancing together and he's terrified.
10:03It was really fun to do those scenes.
10:05Join us.
10:07Us.
10:08Me too.
10:11That is Pittsburgh, Monroeville, maybe?
10:14Pennsylvania?
10:15For Zack and Miri Make a Porno.
10:17Exactly.
10:18Yep.
10:18So nobody's losing.
10:19No one's losing.
10:20We know our own work.
10:21What's that thing?
10:22It's a handball.
10:25I don't know if that's good or bad that we're so familiar with our own work that we can identify
10:30anything we've done by a mere frame of a setting.
10:34Have you ever shot in Pittsburgh?
10:35No.
10:36It was cool.
10:37I liked it there.
10:38It was really cold.
10:39Really cold.
10:43You'd go to craft service and all the liquids would be frozen.
10:46I remember that.
10:47I remember you would try to pour milk in your coffee and the milk was frozen.
10:50You'd open a kind of Coke and the Coke was frozen and just every single thing was frozen.
10:55Um, and it was, it was very, it was very cold, but, but Pittsburgh's a fun city.
11:01There's this place, Pramani Brothers, which is good.
11:03And they make sandwiches with French fries.
11:05And then they put French fries in everything in Pittsburgh.
11:07A Pittsburgh salad is a salad with French fries in it.
11:10I lived right near there.
11:11And they have like a big like Polish community, I think in Pittsburgh.
11:14So there's a lot of like pierogi restaurants and stuff, which were good.
11:18Really good.
11:19I know what that is.
11:20You know what it is.
11:21Yeah.
11:22That is from Jamon Jamon.
11:24Jamon Jamon.
11:24And that is Los Monegros.
11:27That's what it say.
11:28Eragon.
11:29Spain.
11:29Negros.
11:29Yes.
11:30It's an amazing desert.
11:32Like the colors are very intriguing, very cinematographic.
11:37I remember being there and thinking like, why they don't shoot here more often?
11:40Because it's a very mysterious place.
11:43That is the car that has the big jamon.
11:47There is a scene where Javier is driving a motorcycle.
11:54I'm walking with the red dress and I pretend to be angry with him.
12:01My first movie ever.
12:03I've done other like small things here and there.
12:05We all really connected and we were laughing all the time, but we also were very intense.
12:11Like we wanted to take everything seriously.
12:14Really acting.
12:15And I remember like, yeah.
12:16Like method.
12:17I was 17, 18.
12:19And he was 21.
12:21We were like, like make to the crew.
12:26I was like, we want them to be sure that we are serious actors.
12:30You know?
12:30And that we were kids.
12:32Oh God.
12:32Eres un guarro.
12:37I think we both did pretty good.
12:38Okay.
12:39We both nailed it.
12:40Like you said, like maybe we have to worry.
12:42Yeah, exactly.
12:42We're very aware of our own filmographies.
12:45We'll see you next time.
12:46Bye.
12:47Bye.
