00:15what's good everybody it's your boy Dexter Henry alongside Brian Fonseca we are into the offseason
00:23for the New York Knicks the NBA draft is over Brian and I just did two live draft shows this
00:29week which were very interesting this is true I will say that they they're into I had fun they
00:35were fun interesting depending on who you are what you believe who you ask some people a little
00:41bit too mad we had fun we had fun I think most of y'all had fun most people had
00:46fun I hope most of
00:47you guys have fun uh one week removed from the parade I would think I would think fun is still
00:52being had but you know I'm still by the way I'm still seeing Knicks jerseys Brunson jerseys I'm
00:57still seeing them yo not as many but I'm still seeing them today at the time of us recording
01:02this I got a chance in Brooklyn to go to the Jay-Z pop-up and when I got there
01:07the line was a little
01:08longer than I expected despite having these timed entries they were behind schedule but they did a
01:12good job the pop-up was dope check it out if you can there's one in Brooklyn one in Manhattan
01:15but I'm walking down the line and I had to say I could say I passed there's probably 50 people
01:23ahead
01:23of me 20 of them had on like Knicks gear it's 40 percent that's still good about yo you're seeing
01:32it out in these streets like 20 of them had on Knicks gear yeah and it's some form there's a
01:37hat
01:38I'm still seeing Knicks hats I'm seeing people wear Knicks hats that don't match with anything
01:42else they have on you know I mean they have like a green top or whatever else and just a
01:46blue and
01:47orange Knick hat I'm trying to remember where I was the other day and we'll get into what we're gonna
01:51do but there was somebody who was I don't know what place I was at but it was like this
01:56person
01:56clearly didn't have the memo right now wherever I was there was a bunch of people wasn't a parade
02:01or anything but there was people wearing Knicks gear because this is the season of summer everybody's
02:05got their Knicks gear on now and this person was like Brooklyn Nets hat with a Brooklyn Nets shirt
02:09and I was like that's a that is a choice I mean the person's probably like yo I'm 10 toes
02:15down
02:15don't no matter what you know it's draft season draft season's a good time for the Nets all right
02:20this is not a nutshell I'm gonna leave it there I'm not dismissing Brian used to be both teams
02:24and the Knicks went here the Nets went here it was like you know what yeah that games the Knicks
02:29show now I'm just saying that's that's a all right you want to be 10 toes down I guess that's
02:34cool but
02:34we're here to talk a little bit a little bit post the draft we are going to look at the
02:39picks that
02:39the Knicks made some people some of us thought Knicks might not pick anybody but they did they took
02:44Jack Kyle at 39 and then Tyler Nickel at 47 out of Vanderbilt Kale out of Germany so a lot
02:54of interesting
02:55stuff and we said we'll do a film breakdown look at these players and the real purpose of this is
02:59to
02:59look at how can these players work if they pan out if they even make the team if they even
03:06make the team
03:07right in Mike Brown system right what are their strengths what are their weaknesses so we're going
03:12to look at three things here right what's the NBA ready skill that both of these gentlemen have here
03:18how could they fit into Mike Brown's offense and what he likes out of his players and then because
03:25it's not just one side of the ball defense matters too how will they be tested defensively and will they
03:31be able to hold up defensively in the NBA those are those are a couple things so Brian as we
03:38get to
03:38the film I think the question you always have to ask when it comes to players that are drafted I
03:45don't
03:45care where they're drafted I don't care if you drafted one I don't care if you drafted 60 what's
03:51the bankable NBA skill that you have now this matters more for guys in the second round because
03:57you really look at them and being like what's the skill or thing that they can hang their hat on
04:00that is going to keep them in the league right so they can stay in the league and some guys
04:04second
04:04round can have fruitful careers Jalen Brunson obviously a product of that but what's that
04:10bankable skill that gives Jack Hale or Tyler Nickel a chance to just I'm not even forget about the
04:16career just stay on the floor stay on the floor if you have a shot I mean really get on
04:20the floor
04:20yeah that's true yeah to get on the floor and a lot of NBA teams what they look for is
04:24do you have
04:25an elite skill that they can develop like just one for Nickel it appears to be his shooting we'll see
04:33and then with Kyle it appears to be his shot creation potentially you know it's just overall
04:39just shot creation not not shot selection which we'll get into a little bit yeah but it appears
04:44to be the shot creation could also be the passing it depends but a lot of teams they'll look at
04:48and
04:48they'll do this with undrafted rookies too they'll look at okay what's the skill that you have that
04:55can be developed so that you can get in the rotation and you've seen teams just develop like
05:01shooters like a Duncan Robinson for example who was like at one point one of the highest paid undrafted
05:05guys ever he found that he's a great shooter so they develop him he ends up playing the Knicks have
05:11obviously had some success with undrafted rookies as well for similar reasons it's like is it defense is
05:15it shooting is it you know just your defensive versatility not just on the ball but like so we
05:21have to see and it could be hey they're effective enough on both ends of the floor Mike Brown will
05:26reward that if that's the case yeah he absolutely will and I think you hit the nail on the head
05:30we'll
05:30kind of get into this with the film I think for Kale when I looked at the tape on him
05:35the thing for me
05:36is that look he's a guy I don't know if he's a pure point guard he's more of that combo
05:42guard but he
05:43can't handle pretty well can he be another ball handler for you in a way that you'd like for
05:48Mike Brown that helps we anytime you can have another ball handler another shot creator the
05:51Knicks were kind of lacking in shot creation off the bench this is the area I think he can help
05:56in
05:56when you look at his stuff so does he have that combo guard versatility is basically what I'm talking
06:02about and then the passing feel um which from we'll look into this when we get to the tape I
06:07feel like
06:08he has a pretty good passing feel and there's some interesting things that I saw from him in
06:12transition now you mentioned with nickel the shooting yeah which obviously is what jumps out
06:18off the charts for for everybody but I I will take it a little just a step further I think
06:24he's really
06:25good at moving without the ball he's a guy who doesn't need the ball in his hands and that's going
06:29to be really interesting so let's go let's go to the film and show you some of what we're talking
06:33about um and we're going to start with Jack Hale um and just look at a couple things just that
06:40combo
06:40guard versatility that would that we're talking about right does he have that and and I just want
06:46to know for people who don't follow Europe as much Alba Berlin won the Basketball Bundesliga this year
06:53won Germany uh Germany's top league domestically they also competed in Basketball Champions League
06:59which is prestigious although not as prestigious as Champions League and say European soccer you know
07:05if you follow like Champions League that that's the competition in basketball it's EuroLeague then
07:12EuroCup and Champions League is right there but Berlin Alba Berlin has played in EuroLeague before in many
07:19years so like he's seen good competition uh even with Champions League this year but he went to a
07:26story program is the point yep um and they again they won the league and he stood out stood out
07:31enough to be in the draft and he he was originally a Gonzaga commit we talked about this a little
07:35bit
07:35he committed to Gonzaga decided to go in the draft stay in the draft now he's a Knicks so uh
07:40let's run
07:40some film here on Jack Kyle yeah Jack Kyle who you know he's been described as moving the offense at
07:48his
07:48own tempo and he'll look to get out so you see him right here with the ball
07:53nice pass that is a great dime in transition right look at the awareness and look at the slow he
07:58slowed
07:58down is able to make the bounce pass I love what you see from there guys who can make good
08:04decisions
08:04in transition doesn't look sped up I know we're looking at the slow down he does not look sped up
08:09at all whatsoever I mean that's just great recognition of the type of pass you need right there
08:15gets the defense to commit and then drops off the bounce pass you just like his pace here that's
08:21something in watching him that became very apparent to me plays with really good pace yeah his head is
08:26up the entire time he also like he's he looks at his man too he he actually looks right here
08:31he's like
08:31okay I have a runner with me also have somebody here so they have numbers here in transition this
08:36is against Bamberg this might be from the semi-finals uh but we're not sure about that but they did
08:41play
08:41in the semi-finals in the BBL playoffs so just a great bounce pass like these are the things that
08:47you're going to want him to showcase in the summer league it's just basically can you just operate in
08:51transition can you hit your teammates can you run the floor and be a legitimate floor general like
08:58that's going to be one of the things that keeps him on the floor yeah that absolutely is going to
09:01be one of the things that keeps him on the on the floor so you like that there you saw
09:04a little bit
09:04of the pace you see that he can add addition transition I know sometimes we look for the scoring but
09:09if you're going to we'll get to this more about how he can impact and have an impact possibly in
09:14Mike Brown's offense one of the things you're going to want to see is can you create for others
09:18can you be a playmaker that's going to be important to see with this young man as he develops you
09:24got
09:24to remember you're only 20 years old um so important to see this as he as he develops all right
09:29let's
09:29look at the next play with Jack Hale here um and this here just watch him again tough finish that's
09:37a
09:37tough finish you'll see on the replay um as it comes you'll be able to see again we'll look at
09:42that
09:42one more time so he has the ball yep head is up again and right here look he's gonna that's
09:48a
09:48little bit of contact right there even off that so that shows me a little bit of strength to be
09:52able to take it but this is not the only contact he's gonna have as he now gathers and goes
09:57up
09:57contact again here great touch great touch to finish through the contact so you're seeing him able to
10:03attack the basket something you mentioned and you talked about the level of basketball he played
10:08brian can you see the contact there we play shows you right there and then takes it again a nice
10:12and
10:12one finish there and you want to see that from a dude who's listed 6'3 174 yeah you know
10:18to be able
10:18to hit that shot also has a good touch uh great on that play what i do think matters when
10:24you look
10:24at the level that he's playing at and i say this all the time about young men that are playing
10:28professionally in europe they're playing with other grown men they're playing with other grown men right
10:34so to that point you're learning the professionalism and how to get stronger one of the dudes on this
10:37team in his backcourt martin hermanson who actually will come up later on in one of the clips that we
10:42saw we covered him at saint francis when he was playing at for liu and and uh but he's my
10:50age
10:50basically so i was in college covering him and he's still he's been in euro league he's been you know
10:55basically everywhere around the world played in spain professionally so shout out to him
10:58iceland's finest he's over here with jack kyle on the same team yeah so there we go
11:03now we're gonna look over at tyler nickel and we talked about his his nba ready skill is that he's
11:11a movement shooter and he's a floor spacer um he's up here he's up here i really want people when
11:17we
11:18watch these clips with tyler nickel who tyler nickel does not sound how he looks um i heard him speak
11:27and
11:27i was like tyler nickel i have to talk that's a compliment it's a compliment tyler nickel i have to
11:31talk to you i hope we can get you on the show or because there's a lot i feel somebody
11:36say he
11:36sounds like paul wall he does sound like paul wall that's the first thing i thought he kind of
11:40first i thought is paul wall without doesn't necessarily have the houston draw on it but he
11:44sounds like paul a little bit that's the first thing i thought and i want to know if you listen
11:48to some paul wall well tyler nickel we got to get you on the show fact it has to happen
11:53um but
11:53please watch the movement of this young man because he moves really well right here without
11:59the ball but you know this man can shoot okay he averaged 30 13 and a half points at vanderbilt
12:04shot 44 over 44 percent from downtown on pretty good volume pretty good volume that's the thing
12:11that's the thing too shot 85 from the line yeah so this guy can shoot right he can absolutely shoot
12:16but it's the movement that's impressive to me so actually we should actually look at this right here
12:23because this is good this is a good read if you haven't if you have a really good passer there's
12:27a tough pass to make but if you have a really good passer here you could maybe just get a
12:31shot at the
12:31rim but he continues he doesn't give up on a play there sets a screen for his teammate peels around
12:36another screen that's just very good very good movement without the ball there it's elite it's elite
12:42movement here's the other thing about that when you move as well as he does without the ball
12:46and you see you see how tight he is too like coaches will tell you yo brush off your teammate's
12:50shoulder
12:50yep like brush off your teammate here he's almost it's like you call him football running an excellent
12:55route and he did that's also a good screen set by his teammate there but to hit these kind of
13:01shots
13:01where you move that well and you don't need the ball you know what you have to be well conditioned
13:05very very well conditioned any any of these guys that you know we talk about steph curry ray allen
13:10reggie miller back in the day very well conditioned guys to be able to run off screens and then get
13:16their
13:16own shot that's impressive that's a really impressive movement from him without the ball
13:21and look movement is not just in the half court you want to see guys move in transition as well
13:25too
13:25and we're going to see a little bit of that from mr nickel as as well too 40 40 from
13:32three for three
13:32straight college seasons you know and doing it on four and a half six and seven and a half attempts
13:38per game this is some good volume this is his nba ready skill right right i just think we should
13:45also
13:45focus on the movement with him too yeah and the size helps also size helps and when you can move
13:50and you don't have to give someone the ball you know this is a sort of a role landry sham
13:55it kind
13:56of could be in now he can put the ball on the floor a little bit he can dribble if
14:01he needs to get
14:01into the mid-range he can do that a little bit you don't want him doing too much right but
14:05he can do
14:06that a little bit and that's also something that he could develop a little bit more that he could get
14:10better at so we'll move on to the next clip with tyler nickel and now here watch him he's at
14:15the top
14:15of the screen uh here so you see him there watch him and how he moves to the spot that
14:22he needs to
14:22get to ready too late and look at that look at the space between see that's recognition too he
14:28recognizes the space right here because everybody was bunched up yeah if you're if you were trying to
14:33guard him here and there's no poor communication there by arkansas um because now the defender at
14:40the top of the screen has is in a two-on-one situation because number seven on arkansas not
14:45sure exactly who that is uh he did not communicate properly and nickel realizes this and just range
14:54that's good range okay look at look at his range he's a couple feet beyond the college three-point
14:59line and calmly walked into that clearly an nba three by the way clearly an nba three and drains
15:06that easily nothing but net so this guy's got range i know some of you guys already saying the
15:12nicks got themselves a sniper we will see how he shoots at the nba level but he can shoot that's
15:17his
15:17nba ready skill he can shoot there's a lot of comps to him you and i were talking about this
15:22after the
15:23show uh last night you're seeing comps obviously the lazy stereotypes duncan robinson sam merrill sam
15:30merrill um who's the other one this is all all the all the white six seven six shooters that you
15:36could think of now here's the thing i'm saying this if he is even close to any of those guys
15:41where you got him at four oh if he's duncan robinson or even sam merrill like yeah that's yeah
15:45that's a win it's a huge win sam hauser's another one house another one yeah yeah i saw i saw
15:50all of
15:50them but like the shoe kind of fits except he doesn't sound like sam merrill he can work
15:58duncan robinson his get down's a little bit different is all i'm saying yeah it's a little
16:04it's a little different tyler nickel his get down's a little different yeah uh again he might be
16:10listening to the paul wall uh we don't know shout out shout out to virginia now he might he might
16:16love
16:16the clips more than me uh now here's the thing that is the number two question and what we're
16:23going to look at here is can they play both of these guys in the knicks offensive ecosystem and
16:30this is a change for us because last year in offseason we were trying to talk about okay what
16:34do players look like in mike brown system we were projecting what could players look like in this
16:38system because it was going to be so different from tips and it was it was a whole lot different
16:43the offense was a lot more modern it was full of more movement shooters getting to the corner yeah
16:48something that could really impact nickel here right it's it's it's that we're going to talk about ko
16:56first because the thing to function in a championship level offense as a rookie is you kind of got to
17:05know
17:06your role and you can't be out here hijacking possessions so you almost got to play the role that
17:12the coaches are looking to play and defending which we'll get to last but not the least important
17:18probably the most important actually is probably going to keep you on the floor now for kale the and
17:25you see people who have analyzed him and looking at him in the draft process people believe in his
17:32passing creativity shout out to rafael barlow a draft guru who had a video on kale who he's very
17:39very very very high on um and said this with weight days before the knicks picked him
17:45he likes his passing creativity can be a little bit turnover prone right which he's still young little
17:52bit of a gun offensively also with the shot selection shot selection i see i saw some stuff where i
17:56was like
17:56oh that's that might ambitious shot take ambitious that's very nice that might get you uh that might put you
18:02on the bench um i did like the passing diversity i saw from him yeah i agree he's he can
18:09do a lot
18:10whether it's bounce passes whether it's lobs he's going to look for guys but for me one of the things
18:16is okay how's he gonna look in pick and roll situations can he be a secondary creator can he be
18:24that kind of connective guard that you need right like that's that's really the thing for me is he is
18:31he
18:32truly able to do that um and how is he in transition and so the four of the first clips
18:38we're gonna look
18:38at here this is a pick and roll situation because if you're going to be in some spots where you
18:43are
18:44the lead guard we'll say because he's profiles as a combo guard but if he's going to be a lead
18:47guard
18:49the coaches are going to see how you're going to do his pick and roll situations or when are you
18:52going to know when to take your shot are you going to know when to hit the roller or the
18:57guy who's
18:58slipping what how are you going to handle that and that's something when watching him at this level
19:03it was okay he had some moments with that um sometimes a little vicious as you said with the
19:09shot taking yes but sometimes also making the right play when taking the shot as we'll see here in this
19:14clip um which i liked here here he is he gets the screen now look that's an ambitious shot it
19:23very
19:23much is now there's space his defender also did not play this well no got a fake there i mean
19:32listen
19:32it is open and to be fair to him four seconds left on the shot clock right which i want
19:41to pick i want
19:41to make a quick note about something because one of the things people are going to look at is your
19:46shooting percentages which were not that high all the time and rafael barlow said this who's watched
19:51him in germany more than you and i have recently said yo there's a lot of times he got the
19:58ball
19:58grenades late in the shot clock i had to put it up this is an example of that but why
20:03to chose his
20:04play is yeah but he also recognized the space between them and the defender who did not play
20:08well which you were right brian he's worried about probably getting beat off the dribble why he's
20:13playing back so much now he rolls he fires and he's able to hit the shot but i still got
20:20to give him
20:20credit it's good recognition late in the shot clock where he had to do something it's a shot jaylen
20:25brunson would take i'll tell you that it is against a pretty good team like unicaja's pretty good team
20:29in spain yeah so you so you this this is what he can do in a pick and roll he
20:34can hit shots people
20:36think he's a better shooter than what you saw overall from the numbers of him in germany did get some
20:42grenades but if that but if that's the case combined with the playmaking like i don't want to overstate it
20:47because ultimately we're talking about somebody who we we don't there we don't know the extent of
20:51what this is going to look like but like are there tools here for him to potentially crack the rotation
20:56sure now the the other thing that's up against him obviously is assuming you keep jose alvarado
21:01and you still have tyler kolak in your system and you obviously have jaylen brunson it's like okay where
21:06are these minutes actually going to come from but that's not something you really worry about with the
21:09second round pick right away we don't even know the nature of the deal we don't know uh what type
21:14of
21:14guarantee non-guarantee as of when we're recording this we don't know if he's even going to get a
21:18two-way although at 39 i don't think that's going to be the case that might be more of a
21:23tyler nickel
21:24conversation yeah but we'll see but i mean this is good recognition here given that like this is the
21:32best shot you're going to get in this situation with less than five seconds on the shot that's that's
21:36the point and the recognition is key here and you recognize it obviously drains the shot
21:40but it shows that he can make some good decisions whether for himself or others
21:44in pick and roll situations on to the next play yep uh here there's hermanson there's there's
21:50hermanson there we we see and i'll allow you this is another situation of of look please watch
21:56watch him uh kale who's at the top of the screen here by himself and just look at his decision
22:04making
22:04and patience on this play good fake draw two there's a pass open shooter good shooter also
22:11yep knock it down yeah love it loved loved loved the decision making there um patient this is a
22:19situation where you can say oh wow he got him on the head fake he could have went up for
22:23the shot
22:23but he immediately recognized the other defender was coming over to help got two and he made the
22:29absolute right pass and so this is someone you want to see this is good shock creation too right
22:34off the head fake yes he's able to do that and so the recognition to me tells me that's a
22:38player
22:39with a pretty high iq that can recognize what's going on the floor and how to create for others so
22:44again things that could be developed with him but you like this if he can be that kind of secondary
22:50creator that connector guard the other thing about kale kale is that he's got good size he's six five
22:58yeah he's 175 173 about there to put on some more weight but height wise he's got good size and
23:04and
23:05good length which will be interesting when we get to the defense now for nickel here we go okay top
23:12of
23:12the screen again here's the thing i want people to watch it's so much this guy he knows how to
23:19move
23:19but if he's going to get on the floor it's going because it is shooting
23:24hopefully you can hold up defensively which we'll get to but also you need a shooting to be
23:29a floor spacer particularly in minutes when cat or brunson are not on the floor can you get a role
23:35you come in and be a shooter when neither of those guys on the floor that's what landry sham has
23:38been
23:38able to was able to provide for the dicks last year can he is he somebody that could fit into
23:44that
23:44role if sham it doesn't come back don't know if sham it's coming back or not but is he a
23:47guy that could
23:48grow into that role watch what he also how he's going to help grow in a role is what you
23:53do also
23:53when you don't have the ball and it's a good point because think about who he'll be sharing minutes
23:57with if he does end up cracking any rotation jose alvarado yep possibly tyler kolek yep so guys who
24:06will look to pass often dribble with their head up he's got to be ready to shoot right so here
24:11we go
24:15so the thing there like that different kind of movement you saw ghost screen yeah right he pops
24:21out here and it's a ghost fake like he was calling for a screen here too here too and i
24:26love this right
24:27because people then have to respect that more with him look and they committed it's a wrap this is the
24:32now here oklahoma this is this is already a beat too late too late now you're letting a 40 percent
24:38three-point shooter set his set his feet and rise and comfortably and drain the shot and what if he's
24:47able to do that in the league where you're gonna have to worry on that play because he's gonna do
24:53something like set a ghost screen and know he can then cut left or right and get himself an open
24:58shot
24:58and drain those that's a little thing setting a ghost screen i know it's he's not actually setting
25:03a screen but we've seen the movement without the ball but now we're seeing detail in the movement
25:07act like he's calling for it gets it and is ready to rise and fire and one of the ways
25:13you can beat
25:14quickness is what iq with the subtleties and things like that again this is just a beat this is this
25:20is
25:21good because like in the nba it's all about the margins and this is already too late for the defense
25:26you have two here on the ball where you don't need it and you have a 40 percent three-point
25:31shooter
25:31just flaring out to the wing and he's good of a shooter yeah and look he already has a look
25:36here
25:37there's not a hand up defensively nope then the hand is up too late at this point like this is
25:41too
25:41late quick release rise and fire boom yeah loved it when i saw that play i was like oh man
25:48i love
25:48i love the movement i love that you said the ghost screen that shows me you can pay attention to
25:52the
25:53details possibly and that can get him on the floor that's an nba play that's an nba play that's what
25:57i saw
25:58on that all right next play for our guy nickel here um and this again the movement man please watch
26:08watch the movement on this play and this to me is also what you'd like to see in the nba
26:12now go back can you go back a second first of all that's very good point guard play also
26:16like that's a great point guard play great point guard play but here's the thing here's the thing
26:21this is what i say all the time what look at this right here he's gonna get his man
26:25and he could go to go all the way but watch nickel because nickel never stops moving he could stop
26:33right here he's like oh man i didn't get i could stay there and get the pass but let me
26:37move so that
26:39i can make the pass even easier right for my guy and get a better shot for me what's the
26:44most valuable
26:45shot in basketball corner three corner three and shout out to the point guard for not turning this ball
26:51over right here because he's late to hit the man in the center and it's like oh you might want
26:57to
26:57fit that pass in but nope keeps his head up nickel great movement without the ball great movement
27:04gonna go to the corner and this is a great every point guard needs to be able to make this
27:08pass right
27:08here yep but it's the movement is just so great because nickel all the time nickel could have stayed at
27:17the
27:17top of the arc didn't moved it's it's it's great beautiful basketball there but it doesn't happen
27:22if he stays complacent and he gets the most valuable shot you can get the corner three shortest three
27:27pointer and is able to get it in the movement this is a great pass it's a great job by
27:32the point
27:32guard still putting pressure to attack the rim yeah even though he wasn't going to shoot sec
27:36championship game that there is acoff i believe that is i actually try to close out on him yep
27:41and there you go rise fire and hits i mean it's it's beautiful we even have a nice replay
27:47of this here so you can see how good of a pass that was um from the from the baseline
27:52this is great
27:53great point guard play i love that it is and it's a great relocation to hit there so you love
27:59that
27:59see that is that's nba play that'll keep you on the floor that it's a small detail but he could
28:06have
28:06just stayed at the arc but recognizing to move and be able to move catch and shoot yeah that'll
28:12that'll keep you on the floor so we saw some things from these guys shout out shout out to shout
28:16out to
28:16duke miles who made that excellent excellent pass by the way it was good now last thing we said
28:22defensive trust defense defense defense sometimes we have a tendency to talk about offense i want to
28:28talk about defense the question for me with these guys is can either of these players defend well enough
28:33to earn mike brown's trust why does this matter why does this matter for second round picks we saw
28:39this with mohammed diawara last season his defense which we all thought was and was ahead of his
28:46offense even though he played well offensively his defense and mike brown trusting this defense got him
28:51on the floor and among other things but it did help getting on the floor so let's look here
28:58at jack kale defense and my thing for him is can he defend guards and can he navigate screens
29:05that's going to be the thing for me so if you're watching this right here he's at the top of
29:09the
29:09screen right he's now going to be coming to this action no switch stays with his man right and he's
29:16gonna he's gonna get attacked but a good job moves his feet stays with him and gets his hand in
29:21there
29:22knock away the steel those are the kind of things especially where he's not strong yet he still is
29:28developing but he did a good job right didn't reach until the dribbler put the ball out in front of
29:34him and then was able to knock it away he's gonna get tested as a rookie if he does get
29:38minutes and
29:39people are gonna go right at him just like the ball handler did here he's gonna have to be ready
29:43to
29:44keep his hands ready move his feet he did that there that's a good job of him defending now it's
29:48gonna get harder in the nba because faster and bigger stronger yes they will mismatch hunt both
29:54of these dudes really yep not not even just because they're rookies but also because of their size like
29:58he just he he's listed sub 180 and then tyler nickel i mean obviously they're just gonna profile him
30:07they're just gonna we had the dude from vanderbill who uh showed up to the stream uh for round two
30:13uh who
30:14gave us a little bit of a scouting report said that he actually thinks he's underrated defensively so
30:18that will obviously get put to the i kind of believe him based on some of the stuff i watched
30:22when you said that we'll see we'll see how he's tested i it's hard to gauge sec versus even the
30:28summer league so yeah it's i agree with that all right next next play we'll look at with kyle um
30:34here and this is you're not gonna see anything fancy on this play but you're gonna see how he's
30:39gonna get tested yeah because of his size or lack of strength perceived strength that we've seen
30:45we've seen with him so far so just watch this he's he's right there guarding the ball okay but
30:51there's a pretty good job moving his feet thought about reaching for a second and then he didn't
30:56and then is able to harass his man and force a turnover right and a lot of that helped because
31:04he didn't he was disciplined this is what you're gonna need to see from him to stay on the floor
31:09yes
31:10he didn't get the steal but he helped force that turnover it was absolutely important in that
31:15situation he didn't get hunted in the same way he did in the previous play but he stayed disciplined
31:21that was it he almost reached he was very close to he caught himself didn't get his hand in the
31:26cookie jar but i like that he stayed disciplined there and didn't foul those are going to be the
31:30things that matters as he plays faster bigger stronger competition yeah now onto your boy nickel
31:38look this play right here this is all the stereotyping okay they were gonna hunt him
31:47oklahoma's up big in this game right vandy's losing this game at home which ended up being a not good
31:53loss for them but he's getting hunted on his possession they were getting their ass whooped in
31:57this one they're gonna throw bigger stronger players at him more athletic players at him and and
32:01here you go how's he gonna hold even though he's six eight in the post mm-hmm how's how's he
32:07gonna
32:07hold and i i didn't think he had it he was getting moved a little bit there's a little bit
32:18of moving
32:19of the furniture here but uh mr nickel rose to the occasion so you want to see can he hold
32:27his ground
32:28against bigger stronger players he's gonna get match up against some threes some fours
32:34that are gonna be tough this is a good spin move it's good recovery by him never jumps until the
32:39ball's up in the air probably should have probably should have went straight up also definitely
32:44overthought this one a little bit i agree but you got to give credit you got to give credit he's
32:49in
32:49good position here good position yes it doesn't bite on the first pump fake and then is able to get
32:54the block so look there's gonna be guys that go straight up in the league but you gotta like what
33:02you saw from him here in terms of defensive recovery now look for a guy that runs as much as
33:06he does on
33:07the offensive end he's gonna get tested um on the on the defensive end for sure this is uh terry
33:14on
33:14reed who's apparently a five-star was a five-star recruit uh coming out although he's already moved
33:19from alabama to oklahoma but more or less a pretty solid role player in college yeah but you like you
33:27like here that he held his own so can he do that in the nba i don't know because they
33:32will test him
33:32they will test him and you he'll probably get tested more on the perimeter on the perimeter yes and with
33:37guys who also can move that want to make him work you're like oh you like to run a lot
33:42and navigate
33:43screens and stuff on offense we're gonna make you work it's gonna be speed he's gonna be met with a
33:48lot
33:48of guards who were who were quick you're gonna see this on the next play yes guards who probably
33:52quicker than who he's guarding here but watch the bottom of your screen right under the basket
33:57keep right under the basket yeah yeah you it's actually what you did there you did a little bit
34:01of a profiling yourself uh and watch he now is the chaser off the screen so now he's chasing
34:10pretty good job he's beat but look at this the separation that's caused right there but he's
34:16gonna get attacked like that and he's gonna have to either be more connected to his man
34:21quicker around the screen not allow for that space to be created right it's gonna this is where strength
34:29is gonna matter for him too you gotta get stronger strength iq i mean and and ultimately this is why
34:36we talk about margins because he's actually okay here and then at the very end what do we always talk
34:42about during these live streams it's like don't allow players to get to their spots and really
34:47don't allow these players to get to the center of the floor because you see it if you watch a
34:51lot of
34:51jalen brunson as i know a lot of y'all do he loves getting to the center of the floor
34:55when he's making
34:56these moves and getting into the into the paint when you're coming off screens you want to do the same
35:02thing too because look at the shot that he's going to get here this is just enough separation
35:07at the top of the key this is the easiest one of the easiest spots in that area to just
35:14know
35:15exactly how to shoot this ball and once the offensive player feels that they have that space
35:19they can rise and fire and do that when they feel you're connected to them hands up without fouling
35:23they know there's going to be a much more difficult shot and that's somewhere an area where nickel can
35:29get better than that so in the nba they're going to stretch him out more because you're going to see
35:33more of this in the nba at the three-point line yep so you might go around a double screen
35:38multiple
35:38screens whatever it could be the elevator doors play like they're going to put him in all of
35:43these different actions to try to create that space so instead of just peeling off and getting
35:48to that mid-range area oftentimes he might go off here and then for the wing and by the time
35:54by the
35:55time his man uh has a ball in his hands he might be like a couple spots away because of
36:00all the
36:00screening that they could do like they're gonna they're gonna make him work more around the
36:04perimeter than they did in college yeah no they absolutely are it's good it's gonna be work listen
36:08it's gonna be adjustment for both these guys uh coming into the league we will see we don't know
36:13how they can project but this was just some film so you can look at their nba ready skill you
36:18know
36:19how they possibly could fit into mike brown's offense and then will you be able to trust him defensively
36:25these are questions that have to be answered but it's a first look at them to see what they can
36:30do
36:30now hopefully we'll see both these guys in summer league and we will have more time to evaluate
36:34them but just a quick evaluation for them now draft season is over we are on to the rest of
36:40the off
