00:00Today, I'm going to explain how three socialist victories in congressional primaries in New York
00:05City could affect politics in California. By now, you've seen the news that New York City
00:09Mayor Zoran Mamdani, who is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, endorsed
00:13three challengers to establishment Democratic incumbents, and all three of them won. They're
00:19all socialists, and they all support far-left policies like defunding the police, abolishing
00:24ICE, things like that. But the most passionate issue in these races was hostility toward the
00:29state of Israel, something that Mamdani shares himself. That does not necessarily translate
00:33to politics in California, which tends to avoid foreign policy. However, socialist ideas and
00:39socialist candidates are very active in the 2026 midterm elections. That's less true in San
00:44Francisco, where voters have been moving in a slightly rightward direction. Voters replaced
00:49London Breed with Mayor Daniel Lurie, for example, about 18 months ago. Interestingly, Lurie is the
00:55cousin of Dan Goldman, one of the three Democrat incumbents who lost his seat in New York. They are
01:00both heirs to the Levi Strauss fortune. And Lurie has been moving the city in a more pragmatic
01:04direction. But in Southern California, and particularly in Los Angeles, things have been
01:08moving leftward, most notoriously in the race for mayor, where socialist candidate Nitya Raman made it
01:14into the general election to face off against incumbent Mayor Karen Bass. There are also several
01:19socialist policy questions on the November ballot, including the billionaire tax, a 5% wealth tax,
01:24on the richest Californians. And California voters, again, especially in Southern California,
01:29have been asked to approve several tax increases, and some of them have been passing, particularly
01:34in LA County. What the New York City result means for California is a general sense of momentum.
01:39The socialists are more organized within the Democratic Party, and they are pushing the party
01:43further and further to the left, even though there are some regional counter-movements.
