The Junkies look at the tight finish of the 2026 US Open, where Wyndham Clark hung on to become a two-time champ!
Transcript
00:00Wyndham Clark wins the U.S. Open for the second time.
00:04EB wins, right?
00:06That's right.
00:06EB wins a double pot.
00:08I'm salty.
00:08I have to ship him 20 bucks.
00:09EB, you've got to ship him 20?
00:1120.
00:11You escaped.
00:12You escaped.
00:13Oh, yeah, we should be 10?
00:14Yeah, we came to the conclusion that you owe 10 because it's from the Masters Bowl.
00:18I mean, you didn't get to pay.
00:19Yeah, you shouldn't have to pay 20.
00:21Yeah, we deemed you shouldn't have to pay 20.
00:23Okay, that's fair.
00:24That's fair.
00:25My Venmo's very skimpy.
00:26All right, let me Venmo you 10 bucks now before I forget.
00:31Why does everybody hate Wyndham Clark?
00:33Well, that's the locker room stuff from a year ago at Oakmont.
00:36I thought the fans were brutal.
00:38It's embarrassing.
00:39It's embarrassing in the Ryder Cup.
00:41They just got to get it together.
00:43We got to stop cheering guys when they hit a ball in the center of the green and it rolls
00:48off.
00:48Yeah, I heard that.
00:49I was listening as I was driving back from Outer Banks.
00:52A lot of anti-Rory sentiment, too.
00:53Man, they really hate Rory's guts.
00:56Yeah, I mean, what's Wyndham Clarkson?
00:59I knew he threw a club like 50 yards.
01:01Let me itemize why people kind of hate him.
01:06One is he destroyed the locker room at Oakmont and then didn't really take accountability for it
01:13until a year later, a couple years later, when he realized that what he did was wrong.
01:18What did he do?
01:19He smashed the locker?
01:20He smashed two lockers.
01:21He kicked two lockers in.
01:23And then the club basically removed him.
01:26He can't go back.
01:27I think he remedied the situation.
01:30He paid it off with anger management or whatever.
01:32But he's right.
01:33It's some passive apologies for a while.
01:36It wasn't his fault that he got mad and kicked a locker in.
01:39Yeah, but the fans shouldn't even really know about that, to be honest with you.
01:44Yeah, but it was a big deal.
01:45It made a big deal.
01:46It got out there.
01:46A member took a picture of it, sent it to a media member.
01:51Then they weeded it out there.
01:51There's no defending it.
01:52Yeah, he was out there.
01:54Yeah, he was out there.
01:54And he was mad.
01:55He was more mad that he got outed than realizing that he destroyed the property in the room.
02:02Secondly, I think it was the PGA Championship where he hit a bad drive and then hurled his club,
02:09which almost hit a volunteer and could have seriously injured him.
02:14And then didn't really apologize for that.
02:19But he kind of dabbled with going to live.
02:23He didn't end up going, but he dabbled with it.
02:26You can't get murdered for dabbling.
02:28No, but when he was talking about it afterwards, he doesn't want any of the live golfers back to the
02:35PGA Tour.
02:36He wants to shrink the PGA Tour and have less members and make it more exclusive.
02:43He's also kind of an elitist a little bit, has that attitude that people don't like.
02:52His name just sounds like he's a country clubber, like he was born in a country clubber.
02:57I don't know anything.
02:58He could have been born in the ghettos.
03:01I have no idea, but it just sounds like a poofy name.
03:04I don't know his full background.
03:07In his defense, a lot of elite golfers played at a very poofy country club as kids growing up.
03:13And also, I'm going to also defend him, too.
03:15A lot, like Scotty will toss his club.
03:18John Rahm was kicking his driver down the fairway.
03:21Joaquin Neiman got penalized two shots for throwing his club on Saturday or whatever day that was.
03:26So guys do act immature.
03:29It's not unique to Wendell.
03:30I just think it was unfair.
03:31And he's kind of a weird dude, too, and that helps.
03:36He had a big lead, too.
03:37So right off the bat, to have a big lead, I think a six-shot lead on Sunday, and once
03:45one shot goes away, the crowd starts rooting against him.
03:50Well, they were rooting against him the whole time.
03:51They were all rooting for Scotty to complete the career grand slam.
03:54It was like a perfect storm, and it happened to be in New York where those guys don't give a
03:57F.
03:58Well, think about how Patrick Reed's unlikable, Bryson's unlikable, like Colin Montgomery was unlikable back in the day.
04:05It's kind of the same thing that's happening to Wendell right now.
04:07Yeah, once they find a target, they're not going to let go of it.
04:09Well, I hope they turned it around because I thought he handled himself great all week.
04:15And it was pretty incredible to win the U.S. Open wire-to-wire in a course that looks just
04:21butt-un-fun.
04:22I don't know how those guys manage it.
04:24But three guys finished the tournament under par.
04:27You saw it.
04:29Guys are hitting what would look like perfectly great shots in the middle of the green.
04:34And if they don't have enough spin on it or whatever, it's going to roll off down the slope and
04:39into the rough.
04:40I mean, just a brutal, brutal golf course.
04:43And somehow he navigated it.
04:45One shot better than everybody else, even though he was three over on Sunday.
04:49It was getting a great run from Sam Burns, and Scotty was hanging in there, and Tom Kim was in
04:54there.
04:55And a bunch of guys kept him honest, and he escaped.
05:01He escaped shooting 73 and winning his second U.S. Open title, which, by the way, might put him in
05:08the Hall of Fame.
05:09Yeah, probably.
05:09It makes your Hall of Fame eligible.
05:11He may be unlikable, but he's probably going to go to the Hall of Fame.
05:13Because he's 32, and he's probably going to win at least one or two more majors.
05:17I mean, he's got the game for it.
05:18He's got the game for it.
05:20So I was riveted.
05:22I couldn't watch a lot of it because I was traveling, and you're at a guest person's house.
05:29You want to just own their TV.
05:31But I did do my part when I could to try to figure out how to turn on the TV.
05:35I'm sure you did.
05:35And try to watch as much of it as I could.
05:38Did the TV have a label?
05:39Yeah, did you get TV shame, too?
05:41From his fancy-ass TV?
05:43Well, it had one of those remotes that the whole house is connected to, and you've got
05:47to try to figure out how to turn it on.
05:49I didn't know.
05:49Yeah.
05:50And everyone's sleeping, and I want to get up early and see what's going on.
05:53I like to have one simple remote for each TV.
05:56I don't like to muck up my TV viewing.
05:59I like it nice and easy.
06:00Well, they do have one remote, but it handles...
06:04See, that's too much.
06:06You're just telling me it's handling everything in the house, like the blinds, the TV...
06:10Well, I don't know if it's handling the blinds.
06:11The thermostat.
06:12I'm not saying it did that.
06:13Everything from one remote, I'm not a big fan of.
06:15But it's a whole house system, and I had to figure out how to do it without waking anybody
06:20up, which I was able to do.
06:22But anyway, awesome tournament.
06:26I can't believe we're already three majors down.
06:28I still struggle that the British Open is the last major of the season.
06:33That's coming up in a month.
06:36I think it's kind of good that the British is last, that it's just not the PGA, because
06:41to me, and I know some people say, oh, the PGA is as prestigious as any of them.
06:45To me, that was the throwaway.
06:47Yeah.
06:47Like, the three sillies...
06:49You still want to win it if you're a poor golfer.
06:51But the three sillies, in my opinion, the Masters, the Open, the U.S. Open, and then the
06:57British.
06:58I think most people agree with you, except that the PGA Championship always claims to
07:03have the best field, because they'll have, like, the top 100 golfers, right?
07:06The way you qualify for it is different than some of the others.
07:10I get the sales job.
07:11I'm not necessarily somebody that's bought that.
07:14Yeah.
07:15So, I think it's kind of cool.
07:16You'll have the British at the end.
07:18Yeah, it's cool.
07:18It's just that my brain is just not wired that way.
07:21It's just...
07:23I always feel like golf is searching for somebody to galvanize everybody, like Tiger, so then
07:32when you have a run like Rory or Scheffler, I don't feel like Wyndham Clark's that guy.
07:38No, I don't think he's that guy.
07:39But he'll...
07:40I'm sure he's a great golfer.
07:42He'll be in the hunt for another one, too.
07:43Zero Q rating.
07:45That's what I'm talking about.
07:46If he walked down the street here in D.C. in his golf outfit, one person might recognize
07:50him.
07:51Maybe one.
07:51But that's not...
07:51Nobody's saying he's the next great thing.
07:53I'm just saying he's probably going to go to the Hall of Fame, and he's a great player.
07:58But, yeah, I mean, Scotty's proving that, you know, there is no next Tiger.
08:04Scotty's great.
08:05Scotty's playing, like, for him, like C-plus golf, and he's still in the hunt on Sundays.
08:12He's just not able to close it out.
08:13The fields are probably a lot better.
08:16I mean, just...
08:16Golfers nowadays, with the technology that they have, it's...
08:21The fields are probably a lot stronger.
08:23They might be, but the courses are brutal.
08:26I mean...
08:27I didn't think the course looked like it was playing that...
08:29I wanted more carnage.
08:31They widened the fairways.
08:33Yeah, but still.
08:33They got hooked.
08:34They got hooked.
08:35They got hooked for two hours on Thursday.
08:39Without the wind?
08:40Well, at 6 o'clock, people were looting the course for birdies on Thursday.
08:46Yeah.
08:46Because there was no wind.
08:47At the end of the day, Matt, three under par.
08:50Three guys under par.
08:51Yeah, but if you just look at a hole, at the hole, and see three under par, in your brain,
08:56you go, oh, okay, well, it wasn't that bad.
08:58The course didn't have that much teeth to it.
09:01I thought the greens had a ton of teeth to it.
09:04Yeah, to me, I would never play there.
09:06I wanted sharper teeth.
09:08I would never play there.
09:09Don't invite me to a course like that.
09:10What if it were free?
09:11You wouldn't play?
09:12No, no way.
09:13You could depend.
09:13Why would I go over there and just want to be miserable?
09:16You can't even hit the green.
09:18That's true.
09:18But these guys are incredible.
09:19I don't know how they manage it.
09:20I don't know how they manage their emotions.
09:23They're just incredible.
09:25So, you know, for those of you that love golf, it's basically almost over.
09:31We got one left, and then we get the contrived FedEx Cup stuff that we try to get excited for.
09:37And those of you that hate golf, well, good on you.
09:39There's only one left.
09:41There's only one major left.
09:42Yeah, but if you look at the last four years, I mean, Wyndham Clark deserves, I mean, major,
09:47major props because I'm looking at the major winners over the last just four years.
09:52So that's 16.
09:55He's won two out of 16.
09:56Uh, Scheffler's won three out of 16.
10:00Rory's won two out of 16.
10:01Everybody else, single winners.
10:03Yeah.
10:04J.J. Spahn, Brian Harmon, Aaron Rye.
10:11Yeah.
10:12It's tough to win two.
10:14He's a Hall of Famer, as you say.
10:16How many did Fred Couples win?
10:18One.
10:18Yeah, and he's a Hall of Famer.
10:19Tom Kite, whose name is like sort of synonymous with golf if you're an older guy.
10:23It won.
10:24It's but hard to win.
10:25Wyndham Clark has more, has one more major than Justin Rose.
10:31And you could say Justin Rose was, was a definite Hall of Fame golfer and his resume stacks up so
10:38much higher than Wyndham Clark's.
10:39Yeah.
10:39Yeah.
10:40Justin Rose is amazing.
10:41Yeah.
10:41It shows you.
10:42It's really hard to close it out on Sunday.
10:44I still held out hope that Justin could maybe squeak out one more in the next year or so, but
10:48he's running out of time.
10:50He finished T11.
10:52How about Joaquin Neiman, who we talked about?
10:54Did you see that, Valdez?
10:55You saw he had the penalty, but then he almost, he also finished tied for seventh and he had an
11:0111 on one hole.
11:02Yeah.
11:03Unbelievable.
11:04He posted an 11?
11:05He had an 11 on one hole.
11:07What did he do on that hole?
11:08I don't know what the odyssey was.
11:09Oh, you don't know.
11:10I'm not even sure.
11:11But he had an 11 on one hole.
11:12Must have hit at least one, maybe two in the water.
11:15I don't know, but I don't know how you could still finish tied for seventh.
11:18You know, imagine if he just, if he just pars that hole, he wins the tournament.
11:23Hey, Valdez, Noah Levin's with a purple heart today.
11:25Not allowed.
11:26Not on our watch.
11:27If he bogeys the hole, he probably, unless it was a par five, I don't even know what it
11:31was.
11:32Even if it was a par five, he wins the hole.
11:35It's crazy.
11:37So that, that's after the two stroke penalty for throwing his club.
11:42Yes.
11:43So I guess he had a nine plus two.
11:45Oh, is that what it is?
11:47That's what I'm seeing.
11:48Okay.
11:48So that when he threw the club, okay, it's a nine plus two.
11:51Okay.
11:51Yeah.
11:52No, it's at, it's absolutely insane.
11:54So props to Wyndham Clark.
11:56It was nice.
11:57The dad was brought out there.
11:58You know, he didn't know his dad was going to fly in and take the red eye.
12:01You saw that, was it Miles Russell that brought his dad out there to carry his bag on the
12:07last hole.
12:08Yeah, that was cool.
12:08That was a cool touch.
12:09That's very cool.
12:12Yeah.
12:12I don't know.
12:13It always gets you in the fields.
12:14Father's day, U.S.
12:15Open.
12:16I know for me, I always.
12:18You know, sentimental thing.
12:20Really, really enjoy it.
12:21So by the way, my son got me a Lowe's $25 gift card for father's day.
12:26Okay.
12:27It's a fine gift.
12:28Yeah.
12:28Lowe's.
12:28Sure.
12:29He goes, I think you go to Lowe's a lot.
12:32Like, that's fine.
12:34No card.
12:35What do you mean?
12:36Snubs.
12:37What do you mean?
12:37He was like, why?
12:38He goes, you're not going to keep the card.
12:39He just gave me the gift card.
12:41He was like, happy father's day.
12:43I don't think you need a card.
12:45I kind of respect the move.
12:46Really?
12:46Well, here's why.
12:48Because cards are just so expensive.
12:50Like, greeting cards.
12:51Like, you can't go into a store.
12:52They are pricey.
12:53You can't go into a store and get a half-decent greeting card these days for under, like,
12:56seven bucks.
12:57I mean, that's like a quarter of the amount of the gift card he's buying you.
13:02Yeah, yeah.
13:02They're outraged.
13:03He's a teenager.
13:04Boy, I've never bought my dad a card in my life.
13:06Yeah, he gets a pass.
13:07Really?
13:07Never.
13:08That would be so weird to me.
13:10Yeah, I don't really.
13:10I would just tell him how I feel.
13:12My mom, yes.
13:13My dad, I would never buy a card.
13:14Right.
13:14Hey, this, um...
13:15So you'll get your mom a Mother's Day card.
13:18You don't get your dad a Father's Day card.
13:20Wow.
13:21Okay.
13:21I don't really...
13:22I'm not really...
13:22I can't remember the last time I bought a Mother's Day card.
13:26That doesn't surprise me.
13:28Hey, you gotta hear this weird story.
13:30So I ended up giving my dad a box of cigars for Father's Day.
13:35But you gotta hear how I got these cigars.
13:37It's been puzzling my brain all weekend.
13:42So these box of cigars show up to my house, okay, like with a bunch of other packages.
13:50And I never ordered a box of Macanudo cigars.
13:53Very nice cigars.
13:54They're like $150 to $200 for this box.
13:57Oh, wow.
13:58And I go, I didn't order these.
14:00And my name's on it.
14:01And it's from...
14:02So a listener or somebody's on it?
14:03I don't know.
14:04It's from Nick Perry in Colorado.
14:07That's like the return address on it.
14:09And I'm going...
14:10And it's who?
14:10Does it say Matt Myers?
14:11And it says Matthew Myers.
14:12And it has my address and everything.
14:14And I'm going in my head.
14:15I go, all right, I didn't order these.
14:19And then I'm going through my messages on Instagram.
14:23Did a listener hit me up and say, hey, I want to send you something?
14:26I didn't see anything on there.
14:28And then I'm just going, how did this person, who I don't even know, know me and my address
14:35to send cigars?
14:37And then I just ended up...
14:38I felt bad just giving them to my dad for Father's Day.
14:40Because, I mean, I'm not going to smoke 20 Macanudos.
14:43My dad will.
14:44So, it's just weird.
14:46Did you ask your fiancee?
14:48Maybe she told somebody?
14:49She didn't know anything.
14:52So, the name is Nick Perry?
14:54Yeah.
14:55And I saw his LinkedIn.
14:57He works for or owns a cigar shop in Colorado.
15:02Oh.
15:03So, maybe it's just a listener.
15:06How do you get my address?
15:07I have no idea.
15:09I actually don't think there's an MMA fighter named Nick Perry.
15:12Probably not that guy.
15:13Probably not.
15:13I'm going to guess a different guy.
15:14Yeah, probably not that guy.
15:16Just showed up at my house.
15:17That is strange.
15:19I'd love gifts.
15:20I'd love freebies.
15:22I'll let you send in my address if you're going to give me free stuff.
15:26I don't think it's hard to find people's addresses nowadays.
15:29I don't think it's hard either.
15:30I think it's pretty easy, actually.
15:30You type in your name and you're so ubiquitous on the internet now.
15:33I mean, I think at one point people worried about their addresses being available.
15:39You can find anybody's address.
15:41I think it's pretty available.
15:42Pretty much.
15:43Then I'm going through my head.
15:44I was like, he come to an appearance or did he come to Dewey?
15:47And I had so many crushes, I don't even remember talking to this guy.
15:51Hey, you've got a great box of cigars.
15:53I wouldn't be asking too many questions.
15:55Hey, Nick Perry, if you're listening, give us a call.
15:561-800-636-1067.
16:00Hit it up on Twitter or something.
16:01Yeah, I just punched up Cakes' address.
16:04Boom.
16:04Right there.
16:07It just says right next to the big tree.
16:09Yep, that's it.
16:10That's Cakes' house.
16:12All right, coming up next, you've got the draft tomorrow.
16:15NBA draft.
16:16So a lot of Wizards buzz.
16:18What does this mean for Anthony Davis?
16:20Might he return and stay long-term?
16:22We'll tackle that next here on The Junkies.
16:24We'll tackle that next.
