Angkor Wat is unlike anything we’ve ever seen.

We woke up before sunrise to explore Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world, before continuing on to Bayon Temple and Ta Prohm — famous for its massive trees woven into ancient stone.

Built nearly a thousand years ago (or maybe much earlier…), Angkor Wat is more than just a temple — it’s an ancient city filled with incredible architecture, astronomical alignments, and mysteries that still don’t fully make sense today.

We explored the Angkor complex at our own pace using a tuk tuk, which we highly recommend. Having your own transport makes it so much easier to move between temples like Angkor Wat, Bayon, and Ta Prohm — especially if you’re travelling with a family.

Watching the sun rise over Angkor Wat, seeing the carved stone faces of Bayon glowing in the morning light, and walking through the jungle paths of Ta Prohm felt truly magical.

00:00This is just such a magical place.
00:05This is what it's for. Look at this backdrop.
00:54A nomad is not a vacation. It's freedom, but it's also discipline.
00:58It's an exchange of security for enhanced experiences.
01:02It's a way of life.
01:50All right, it's about 5AM here in Sam Reap
01:55And we are about to head off to Anchor Watt, which is something we've been really excited about for, well,
02:02since we got here, actually.
02:03It's probably the main reason most people come to Sam Reap.
02:08There is thousands and thousands and thousands of years of history here in Anchor Watt, which I'll get into along
02:17the way.
02:17But we've got to leave because Anchor Watt opens at 5.
02:22The sunrise is around 6, 6.30.
02:24It's about a 20-minute drive by car, so probably a bit longer for us.
02:29And we want to try and beat the crowds a little bit.
02:31We've already bought our tickets, but I've heard the crowds can get pretty crazy.
02:36So we're going to jump in and tuk-tuk and go.
03:13Let's start with this.
03:17Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
03:19C'est à te sonner
03:23C'est à te sonner
03:25Oh, oh, oh, oh
03:51All right, we made it, the drive out here is pretty cool actually, very easy
03:56It is 5.30ish, the moon's still up
04:04Lila's up
04:07Barely
04:08We were told all this stuff about like needing to bring your passport and stuff for the tickets
04:14Because they're really strict, they weren't strict at all, they just looked at our tickets that we bought online
04:18Scanned them and let us straight in
04:20But we don't really know where we're going
04:22Just kind of following the crowd, which there is already a lot of people
04:26Okay, in case you've never heard of Angkor Wat
04:28It is the largest religious temple or religious monument in the world
04:36It covers more area than the Vatican
04:40There's just some incredible facts about it
04:43But I've actually been interested in it for a couple of years
04:47I've been really getting into like ancient architecture
04:52Like the pyramids, Angkor Wat, the Mayan temples
04:58And everything about it is just kind of impossible, honestly
05:04Everything aligns with the sun
05:06There's a moat that goes around Angkor Wat, which you'll see here
05:11Which is like eight kilometres long
05:14And this was supposedly built by hand nearly a thousand years ago
05:21It just seems impossible
05:23And the carving of everything
05:27Like apparently it took 30 years to build
05:30The entire complex is perfectly aligned with the sun
05:34So during the spring equinox, the sun rises directly over the central tower
05:39Something that like even modern architects these days wouldn't be able to pull off
05:45Which is what's so insane about it
05:46It was originally a Hindu temple
05:50But since was converted into a Buddhist temple
05:55I guess because Cambodia is a Buddhist country now
05:58Even just little things that you might not think about
06:00Like so let's say this was built a thousand years ago
06:03Which I have my doubts and so do a lot of other people
06:08Look at these pavers here
06:12Look at the size of them
06:24Each one of these pavers probably weighs, I don't know, a ton each or something
06:30Look how the sun rises right over the entrance
06:32It's so beautiful
06:34Look at all the people
06:41I really didn't think that many people would get up this early for this
06:46But yeah, it's very busy
06:50I was actually wondering why it opened so early
06:53And why everybody decides to come so early
06:56But it makes perfect sense now
06:57Because it's all, this is what it's for
07:00Look at this backdrop
07:01Yeah
07:28Look at this
07:49Holy shit.
08:01Holy shit.
08:33Okay, everyone else has veered or just gone straight.
08:37We're veering to the left here to see if we can beat the crowds.
08:42I cannot believe how many people are here.
08:44It's crazy.
08:45Thousands, right?
08:46Thousands of people.
08:48I was like, ah.
08:50Every other time we go to a tourist place, it doesn't get busy maybe till about like
08:55eight or nine or something like that.
08:57There's not as many people dedicated to getting up first thing in the morning.
09:02Do you reckon we just go straight up here?
09:04Yeah.
09:04There's nobody here.
09:06Cool.
09:06Wow.
09:07Wow.
09:07This is incredible.
09:19You can still see the moon up there?
09:21A little sliver of it.
09:22It's a new moon.
09:23It's a new moon.
09:33Wow.
09:40Look at all the details.
09:41lines, and carved into the walls.
09:51Wow.
09:53That would've taken so much work to do every little thing.
10:15Let's go.
10:33Let's go.
11:09I mean, this place just never ends.
11:12Wow, look at this.
11:12Let's go.
11:49Let's go.
12:13Let's go.
12:42Let's go.
12:47Let's go.
12:49Let's go.
12:51Let's go.
13:23Let's go.
13:24Let's go.
13:25Let's go.
13:32Let's go.
13:41Let's go.
13:44Let's go.
13:48Let's go.
13:53Let's go.
13:59Let's go.
14:02Let's go.
14:08Let's go.
14:19Let's go.
14:20Let's go.
14:57Let's go.
14:58Let's go.
15:11Let's go.
15:16Let's go.
15:19Let's go.
15:22Let's go.
15:23Let's go.
15:31Let's go.
15:35Let's go.
16:00all right we're pretty much done with anchor watts about 7am been here for about an hour an hour and
16:06half we're gonna drive the tuk-tuk to bayon temple which is about a 10 to 15 minute drive and
16:11then
16:11we're going to go to this iconic tree bayon taprom is that what it's called taprom this iconic tree
16:19named taprom so we recommend if you're going to come to anchor watt hiring a tuk-tuk for the day
16:25like you could hire your own driver to drive you around i don't think you need a tour guide honestly
16:30but you can do that if you want it's probably like i think it's like 12 dollars for a tour
16:35guide
16:35we had a lot of people offering but we like to do things at our own pace so a couple
16:40of other things
16:40there's like sculptures and drawings of animals that they just shouldn't have known existed a
16:48thousand years ago like a stegosaurus like how did they know that that existed a thousand years ago
16:54before archaeology discovered that sort of stuff and they've actually done like lidar scans recently
17:00flying over the top of it using satellites i don't know how they do it i'm gonna sound like a
17:05dummy here
17:06but um they do believe now that anchor watt was actually built on top of an entirely different
17:17structure bigger larger city and it could date back thousands and thousands and thousands of years
17:24also some of the chambers in anchor watt um produce like a very unique sound frequency
17:32and they believe that it could have been built as an energy source through sound and vibration which
17:39i know sounds crazy but i've heard this said about the great pyramids as well
