Japan isn’t what you think… especially when it comes to convenience store food.
We spent the day trying some of the most viral and popular foods from Japan’s biggest convenience stores — including 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, and Lawson — and honestly… we were blown away.
From fluffy egg sandwiches and crispy fried chicken, to curry bread, onigiri, and even crème brûlée desserts… this is nothing like convenience store food back home.
And the craziest part? It’s all incredibly cheap.
If you’re planning a trip to Japan (or just curious what it’s really like), this is something you HAVE to try.
What we tried:
Egg Sando (Egg Sandwich)
Pork Cutlet Sandwich
Strawberry Cream Sandwich
Karaage Chicken + Cheese
Japanese Curry Bread
Tuna Mayo Onigiri
7-Eleven Smoothie Machine
Fried Chicken (Famichiki style)
Crème Brûlée Dessert
Ice Cream Sandwich

00:00All right, we're here in Japan. We've got 7-Eleven behind us and in today's video
00:03we're going to be trying 10 of Japan's best convenience store foods. Let's go.
00:27We've got a bit of a rainy day today here in Japan so we thought this would be the perfect
00:32day for us to get to try all the amazing things that the convenience stores have to offer here.
00:37If you've never been to Japan you may not know this but you do not have to go out to
00:41eat to eat
00:42really nice food here in Japan. In fact, I was blown away the first time we came here. We stayed
00:47overnight in Tokyo and we ate only from a convenience store for 24 hours and it's really cheap. The food
00:54quality is surprisingly high. Almost like it's probably as good as what you'd get in like a
01:00fast food Japanese restaurant at home. It's not like a 7-Eleven in Australia or America or Canada
01:05like this is actually like semi gourmet food for very cheap. So we're going to be eating all of
01:11the most popular sort of viral stuff. This morning we're starting out with and this isn't our first
01:16time trying this. Mandy's literally eating this every single day since we're eating. It took so me out.
01:21It's seriously so good. I'm a big egg salad fan and this is the best egg sandwich I have ever
01:28had in my
01:28life. Okay, so it's called the egg sando. That's what we call it. So there's three major convenience store
01:33chains here. Obviously 7-Eleven. There's literally hundreds of thousands of 7-Elevens.
01:45Family Mart, probably my favorite. I think they have the best selection of stuff.
01:49There's usually the most meals in Family Mart we've found. And then Lawson which is where we
01:53went this morning. We're in Hakuba here and the Lawson here is insane. There is at any point in time
02:0020 to 30 Aussie ski bums just crowding Lawson's. They must go through hundreds of these sandwiches
02:07a day. I literally saw like a pallet full of them when I went in there. Yeah, crazy. But so
02:12Lawson,
02:13Family Mart and 7-Eleven. Today we started off with Lawson. Okay, one of the reasons that this egg
02:18sandwich is so good is it's just so fluffy. Like it's like eating a pillow. It's incredible.
02:26Didn't Anthony, I read, this might have been AI, but I read that Anthony Bourdain called these sandwiches
02:33a fluffy pillow of deliciousness. And I concur. This is why I've eaten it every morning. It's
02:41seriously just so soft and like it's filling too for how small it is. I believe it's only 200 calories
02:48and like it's good enough for the morning. I don't 100% know what's all mixed into it. I'm sure
02:54it's
02:54not 100% healthy, but wow does it taste good. It's just so whipped, the egg. And yeah, huge fan.
03:01And it's 275 yen, which is like less than two bucks I think. It's almost like cheesy almost. Like
03:08it tastes like has like a cheesy taste to it. It's unbelievable. It's really good. One spin on it
03:14you can do, which I've seen people do is, um, there's the fried chicken, which we'll show you
03:18later. They put the fried chicken in the egg salad sandwich. I might have to try it.
03:22We're gonna try it later too. I'm not complaining if I have to get another one of these later.
03:27Okay, next. This has been my go to actually. Pork cutlet sandwich. It is literally just a big chunk
03:33of pork cutlet with like breading, fried, a little bit of, it kind of tastes like barbecue sauce.
03:40That's it. Super simple, but it's amazing. I haven't yet. I haven't tried this one.
03:45You haven't tried it? No. I've had it every day. Yeah, I know. And you haven't really tried mine either.
03:50We have our go to. It's all right. That's not my favorite. No, it's not. No way.
03:58The egg's better. Let us know down in the comments if you've had either of these
04:01and which one you would prefer. Next is like the prettiest little sandwich I've ever seen in my life.
04:08It's so cute. It's a strawberry cream sandwich. At first I was like, oh, I don't really like love
04:13whipped cream. Like neither of us are big whipped cream fans. It's really good. Like I think what I
04:18like about this, we love it. You can have it for breakfast. You can have it for lunch. You can
04:23have
04:23it for dessert. You can have it any time of day. We didn't discover this until probably a week into
04:28our
04:29trip. I don't know how I missed it. I saw them in there, but I wasn't sure. I was kind
04:33of like, oh,
04:33like strawberries and cream on bread, but it it's worth the hype. Cheers. Cheers.
04:42It's like, it's kind of like strawberry angel food cake. I guess that'd be like the closest
04:47thing that I could compare it to. What is that? We never had that. Angel food cake? I'll have to
04:52make
04:53it for you one time. I don't know what that is. It's very good. Okay. This one we haven't tried
04:57yet.
04:57It comes high on the list of things to try. You tried it? Yeah, I tried it with my sister.
05:02When
05:02we walked to the Lawson's, we had a few beers and you didn't come. How dare you. But I don't
05:08really
05:08remember it. So this is just like, that's what I told you. It's just karagi chicken with cheese.
05:17Simple. Doesn't sound bad. Actually, you can't even really see the cheese in it, but there is.
05:54It's actually good, buddy. It is.
06:17Epic. Okay. Second stop of the day for lunch. Uh, we came to 7-Eleven. Neither of us have tried.
06:24I've seen this. Actually, for some reason, never even thought about trying it. Um, this is the curry
06:29bread. So it's basically, it's like a fried bread, like donut sort of thing on the outside.
06:35And I believe the inside is... Curry.
06:47Wow, that smells so good. Yeah, it's so good. I'm happy we didn't find this until now. It's like
06:53the katsu curry on the inside. Really? Yeah, with like crispy... Smells amazing.
06:59...around the outside, like sweet donut.
07:05Oh wow. Yeah, it's probably good. We only were finding this at the end of our trip.
07:10I'm not going to share much of that one. Oh, it's a little spicy. Yeah, 10 out of 10 on
07:15that. Seems
07:15like kind of like a Japanese version of a meat pie. A servo pie. Okay, next we've got onigiri. I
07:22believe that's how you pronounce it. Correct me in the comments if I'm wrong. I've never had this one
07:27either. So this is a tuna and mayonnaise onigiri. So it's like a rice ball with tuna and mayo inside
07:37of it wrapped in seaweed. It's like sticky rice, like sushi rice, right? Yeah, but like the seaweed comes
07:43separated. So you kind of like wrap it yourself afterwards. I assume that's just to keep it
07:49fresh. So you wrap it back up. I guess so. If we're doing this wrong, let us know in the
07:55comments.
07:56Just stick in between the seaweed? Yeah, like when you buy it, it looks like it's like wrapped,
08:01but it looks like... So why? I wonder why? Because like, yeah, that just wraps like that.
08:09And then you ate it together? Yeah. Really? I'm pretty sure. If I'm doing it wrong,
08:14let me know down in the comments. I'm just sort of guessing here, but yeah, I think I have seen
08:19other people eat it, but I'm not sure. Maybe they were doing it wrong too.
08:24Yeah, it's like a massive sushi roll. It's so good, actually. The tuna and mayo is awesome. Yeah.
08:32You know what's funny? I haven't seen much sushi in Japan. No, I think it's because so we aren't on
08:46the
08:46coastline. We're like in the Japanese Alps. So I think sushi is more obviously common on the coast.
08:54It's been all ramen. Fresh fish and stuff. So many ramen. And also soba is the thing that you're
08:59supposed to eat when you come to Nagano. So lots of noodles and soups and stuff. But yeah,
09:03not much sushi. We've seen like one actual sushi restaurant that we've noticed. Otherwise it's
09:08maybe even written in Japanese when we missed it. But yeah. So washing all of this down with
09:13a 7-eleven ready-made smoothie. So this is in the freezer section. I haven't tried this yet either.
09:19You just grab it, pay for it. And then you go to this machine, you scan the barcode. It reads
09:26what sort
09:26of smoothie it is and everything. And you just pop it in. And in I think 60 seconds, you've got
09:31a smoothie.
09:32And it's like less than two bucks. Does it taste like actual like fresh fruit? Yeah. It's got like
09:40frozen fruit in it. And yogurt. That's exactly like something I would make at home, right? Yeah.
09:47116 calories. That's pretty, that's a good breakfast. Pretty epic. All right. This is probably my
09:53absolute favorite. Just fried chicken. They sell this at Family Mart, Lawson's and 7-eleven.
10:02I think Family might do the best one. They're honestly all good. I've probably eaten almost one
10:07every day. Yeah. It's like incredibly like perfectly crispy on the outside and then super juicy on the,
10:14on the inside. There's like proper like crackling on the outside. It's so good. Don't eat too much
10:20because this is a little bonus, this one. This is like a hack, a traveler's hack or something, I guess.
10:28So we showed you the egg sandwich earlier. What a lot of people do is they put the fried chicken
10:35in the egg sandwich and that gives you like this mega mega chicken egg
10:42sandow, which is going to be epic. We haven't done this yet.
10:47How's the mix? Amazing. I could eat that every morning, but I wouldn't want to. Get pretty fat.
10:57Yeah. Dang it. I wanted that bite. The egg sandwich could make anything taste good.
11:10No, it's the chicken that makes it taste good.
11:13The chicken's the hero. I don't know about that.
11:21Okay. Got us.
11:26Creme brulee frozen. Oh, that looks good. It looks like a waffle with vanilla ice cream and a layer of
11:35like caramel sauce or something. Lila wants something.
11:46All right. Can I have the first bite?
11:50It looks so good. We're starting with the creme brulee.
11:55Creme brulee is usually not frozen, right? It's like a...
11:58It's like a custard, right?
12:00Creme brulee. Yeah. This one's an ice cream version, I suppose.
12:05It's like $200. It was like...
12:06I can't believe that this is from a convenience...
12:08200 Japanese. Yeah, from a convenience store, like...
12:12It's that good.
12:14Is it?
12:15Yeah. Here, sorry. I'll share it now.
12:24That might be my all-time favorite dessert now.
12:29It's so yummy. What was your favorite?
12:34Cheesecake. I think this just went to number one.
12:38Wow. It's big. It's a very big shift. Let's try the...
12:43The dandy milk. The waffle. It looks like caramel, maybe?
12:48Mm-hmm.
12:55All right. Sorry, Creme brulee. What are you doing?
12:57Yeah, that one. It's very light.
13:01Like, it's not... It's like wafer, I guess, on top.
13:04Yeah. I thought it was going to be like more waffly, but yeah.
13:10Very soft.
13:12Mmm. The caramel's like a crunchy caramel.
13:14That's like an excellent ice cream sandwich. Doesn't get stuck to the roof of your mouth like
13:18a traditional one does.
13:20It reminds me of, um, back in the day in Australia, I think they still have a Maxi Bond.
13:26Do you have that one?
13:27I don't think so. Is it good?
13:28That's my favorite.
13:29If any Aussies are watching and they had Maxi Bonds.
13:32That or Golden Gate Time is probably the best two ice creams.
13:34I don't think so.
13:37Well, so that's our list that we think is probably the best things to get from the convenience store
13:43here in Japan. If you have any suggestions, fire them down in the comments. Let us know
13:49because we want to try everything. Even the combos. If you've got something that you're like,
13:53hey, this is a must try together, we want to know it. Let us know down in the comments.
13:57If you enjoyed the video, give it a thumbs up. Subscribe to our channel. Hit the hype button.
