00:14Welcome back to From the South. We continue with more information.
00:17Intense colors and faces marked by history of scenes of everyday Brazilian life arrived in Asia for the first time.
00:25In the Chinese capital, the work of Candido Portinari serves as a bridge between two worlds.
00:32Our correspondent Bruno Falci brings us the following report.
00:37In the heart of Beijing, the National Museum of China is hosting one of the most important exhibitions ever dedicated
00:45to Brazilian artist Candido Portinari.
00:48For the first time in Asia, the painter's work arrives at one of the world's leading cultural institutions, marking a
00:56meeting between art, history and dialogue between Brazil and China.
01:04Here, we have a historic milestone. A meeting between two cultures, a dialogue of the Global South built through art,
01:13art serves as a tool to bring people closer together.
01:17We are seeing China deepen its understanding of Brazil through the great artist Portinari.
01:24He remarkably portrays the historical moments experienced by Brazil between the 1930s and the 1950s, a fundamental period in the
01:33construction of Brazilian identity.
01:35The exhibition brings together 56 works selected from a collection of more than 5,400 pieces by Candido Portinari, one
01:45of the leading figures of 20th century Brazilian art.
01:49The works are organized into four thematic sections that explore different dimensions of his production, from everyday life to expressions
01:59of Brazil's social and cultural realities.
02:02The exhibition is curated by his son, João Candido Portinari.
02:08The idea of bringing a painter who dedicated his life to solidarity, fraternity, world peace and social justice is to
02:15present Brazil to China through the front door.
02:17The real Brazil, the deep Brazil. The Brazil combines both its joys and its sorrows and which appears with great
02:24strength in Portinari's work.
02:25In the immigrants, we see the most tragic side, the harshness of social life. In the country waiting, we see
02:32his most lyrical side, with children playing and scenes of everyday life.
02:36Ultimately, it is a complete portrait of Brazil.
02:39The exhibition has generated significant interest among Chinese audiences. Around 30,000 visitors per day are expected, and the exhibition
02:49could attract up to 4 million people over its four-month run.
02:54For many visitors, this is their first encounter with Portinari's work.
03:02I really enjoy this exhibition and these artworks because I can feel the emotions the art is wanted to express.
03:08In his work, he portrays the powerful and the oppressors in a very critical way.
03:13His strange broad stories convey a sense of hardship and oppression.
03:16There are also paintings with very intense color depicting children who suffer exploitation and oppression.
03:22Some of the images are shocking and even painful, but after learning the stories behind them, I realized that these
03:28events truly happened.
03:29This helps me better understand the past and appreciate the value of the piece we enjoy today.
03:34Candido Portinari's exhibition is part of the Brazil-China Cultural Year, an initiative that promotes cultural exchange between the two
03:43countries across different artistic fields.
03:46The program, launched by President Lula and Xi Jinping, seeks to strengthen ties between the peoples of the global south
03:53and deepen the relationship between Brazil and China as strategic partners in the construction of a fairer and more multipolar
04:02international order.
