Directed by veteran filmmaker Edward Dmytryk, this explosive feature centers on the Allied amphibious landings at Anzio in 1944. Robert Dickenson (Robert Mitchum) is a cynical, world-weary war correspondent who accompanies American and British forces as they storm the Italian beachhead. Expecting fierce German resistance, the troops are shocked to find the landing zone completely unfortified. However, instead of immediately advancing inland to capture Rome, the overly cautious Allied commander, General Lesley (Arthur Kennedy), orders the troops to dig in and consolidate the beachhead. Realizing the strategic blunder, Dickenson drives a jeep all the way to the outskirts of Rome without encountering a single enemy soldier, proving the road is wide open. By the time he returns with news, German Field Marshal Kesselring has seized the delay to surround the Allied forces with heavy artillery and panzer divisions. Trapped in a deadly stalemate, Dickenson joins a Ranger reconnaissance squad led by Corporal Rabinoff (Peter Falk) on a dangerous patrol behind enemy lines, fighting for survival across snipers-infested hills and treacherous farmland.
