House hunting?? Rumors swirling that Christian Gonzalez may have just bought a home in the Greater Foxborough area- What does that mean? Indication that Gonzo/Patriots could be close to deal? Can Pats pay Gonzalez/Maye/Brown?
Could Drake Maye be the next contract discussion? How much could Maye get? Mahomes money? Allen money?

00:00I was a bit taken aback yesterday when Mike Giardi reported that or suggested that he was dubious about the
00:11New England Patriots paying Christian Gonzalez what the man deserves.
00:17Because the guy has got some some pretty good sourcing there.
00:21And however, on this show, from time to time, we read very deeply into the real estate transactions.
00:31And so I know Jalen Brown doesn't like when people do that.
00:35But so I was somewhat comforted by the news later on in the afternoon yesterday that apparently Gonzo has purchased
00:45a home.
00:46There's no house in Connecticut.
00:47In the greater Foxborough area.
00:50Okay.
00:50So I wanted to ask what those two statements say to you.
00:56I understand the argument that the Patriots have never really paid three high value players at the same time.
01:09And that is what the future holds when it comes to A.J. Brown and Drake May and Christian Gonzalez.
01:15However, just because, you know, and Curtis brings this up all the time, the organization could afford not to pay
01:23people because they had Tom Brady.
01:25Just because they haven't done something doesn't mean that they aren't going to do it and they don't understand how
01:31business is done in the NFL.
01:33Now, I do think that if he were not confident about getting some kind of a deal done, if he
01:40hadn't been getting some sort of indication that they're close or something, he wouldn't buy a home here.
01:46I would agree with that.
01:47You would agree with that, right?
01:48I would agree that he probably, you know, has a spot wherever his offseason where he's going to spend the
01:55majority of his time in some warm climate place.
01:58And he's probably looking at it like, OK, I got this new deal done.
02:02I know I'm going to be here for the next, you know, four years, five years, whatever, you know, whatever
02:07that is.
02:08And he's probably like, I might as well buy a home out here where if I'm going to be here,
02:13you know, 40 percent of the time, at least I know I got a home out here.
02:17So I would feel pretty confident about that, especially with one year left on his contract.
02:23Like if I'm his agent, I would be like I wouldn't tell him to buy nothing.
02:26And how much can we look at the past of how the Patriots have dealt with this stuff based on
02:32where ownership is?
02:34Like, what do you mean?
02:36How? OK, I'll put it plainly.
02:38How much do you think Jonathan has say in things right now?
02:40I think he has a lot of say in it.
02:42Do you think he's increasingly having say?
02:44Yeah. Yes.
02:45OK.
02:45But I also think depending on what you had to tell him to get him here, that Mike Rabel may
02:52have a lot of say in the matter.
02:53Also, I think that's very true point.
02:55Right. Even though he acts like he's totally hands off in the press conferences.
02:59Right. He's like, I'm just basically coaching the football team.
03:02Does anyone believe that he doesn't have a say in that?
03:05No, we believe that he has.
03:06He's like, that's Elliott's thing.
03:08He has. I believe he has the loudest voice in the room that is not named, has the last name
03:13Kraft.
03:14But I'm very curious about, is Jonathan Kraft, if he's starting to really take more and more of the reins?
03:20And I don't know that, but I would assume that it's moving in that direction.
03:24OK.
03:25Is he going to operate a little differently than Robert did?
03:27Maybe he is a little looser with the purse strings.
03:30Maybe he does look at it and say, you know, it was horrible for business that stretch we had when
03:35we couldn't draft players.
03:36And then we had nobody to pay and we had to bring in a bunch of free agents in twenty
03:40twenty one.
03:41And that only worked for a season.
03:43Or it might be like, well, this is the price of doing business when you have a good football team.
03:47You want this. You have to pay your guys like, all right, we know.
03:50And I think it's pretty simple.
03:52So it's just dependent on where the numbers are, like they know where the number is.
03:57Right. We talked to Tyler about this and we all know from the Trent McDuffie deal because it was done,
04:01you know, several months ago.
04:03So he kind of laid the foundation.
04:04So both camps know the Patriots and Christian Gonzalez, where kind of the money is.
04:10You now I think the harder part is going to be next year for Drake May.
04:16Right. Where that money might be and what he could potentially be looking at.
04:21But you want to look and go, OK, we are willing and we are a team that wants to keep
04:28our guys.
04:28I will say I hear this argument from time to time.
04:31This is on the Subaru of New England text line.
04:34Six one seven text.
04:36Christian Gonzalez has missed 16 football games in three seasons and you want to write him a blank check.
04:42Yeah. Yes, I do.
04:43You're an idiot.
04:44How many of those games happened a couple of years ago when he got injured against the Cowboys?
04:48Yeah. When he missed the shoulder, I believe it was a shoulder, right?
04:50Wasn't that week four?
04:52Yes.
04:53I do think it's good.
04:55It would be good business to just write the check and get it done so he can be there for
05:00training camp.
05:00Right.
05:01Because otherwise you do have the issue that he's had where he holds, you know, quietly holds in or whatever
05:07it is.
05:08Really impacted their performance.
05:10Well, but he missed a bunch of games last year, Curtis.
05:14And he was.
05:14He was the only player that actually played to their ability in the Super Bowl.
05:17True.
05:18He is a guy that played through stuff throughout the playoffs.
05:21Unlike your quarterback who was dinged, your cornerback who was dinged played better than anybody on the field.
05:26And so for me, if you believe in the cap and if you do, I'm sorry.
05:31But if you do, every year it's 20% less.
05:35So if you spend $100 million this year and revenue goes up 20%, it's 80%, 80 cents on the dollar
05:42next year.
05:43So the sooner you do it, Greg, the more beneficial it is to the organization and to the way in
05:49which you can spend money.
05:50And your players on that team, right?
05:52So if you get it done quickly, don't you think Drake May and his agent look at it and go,
05:57okay, we're not going to have to deal with these, you know, massive uphill battle to get you a deal?
06:02So it's a good look for your team.
06:04It's a good look for players in that locker room, especially guys that you drafted.
06:09And I know, Meg, you brought this point up.
06:11Guys that you kind of drafted and came up and developed.
06:14It's just a great way to get things done.
06:16Wiggy, I thought your conversation with Ty last Friday was so interesting.
06:20Because Brady is such a hero around here about how he always took less.
06:24Right.
06:25So they could spend more on the rest of the team and bring in the best talent.
06:28And it was fascinating to me that from your guys' perspective, it was like, bro, like now how are we
06:34going to go in and negotiate?
06:36Right.
06:36Well, it'd be like living in a neighborhood and somebody selling their house for way less than what everybody else
06:42is.
06:43And you just go, what the hell are you doing?
06:45I just think a lot of people don't think about it from that perspective.
06:48Yeah.
06:48And it makes sense.
06:49Well, because a lot of people go, you know, you're making so much money.
06:55And why wouldn't you give the team, you love it here, where it's like you're trying to, what you're always
07:01trying to do is set the market for the next guy at your position.
07:05But also drive the money up, you know, everywhere else.
07:08And so guys did not like that.
07:10I mean, you brought up Drake May.
07:13Isn't he going to, he's going to want $70 million a year.
07:16But remember, it's not so much the...
07:19I know, it's the guaranteed money, but he's going to want a lot of that to be guaranteed.
07:22No, but that's what he's earned.
07:24Yes, he has.
07:25And he does, I can't, Wiggy said, well, they're going to, you know, they're more likely going to think about
07:29it with Drake May.
07:30How can you, you know, as long as things go as I would expect them to go this season for
07:36Drake May, how can you blink an eye at $70 million?
07:40Like, write the check.
07:41Can I ask you a question?
07:42When has a member of the Kraft family taken less?
07:46Never.
07:47So why should the player?
07:49No, the player should never.
07:50I guess the question becomes, when you start to look and you start to figure it out, would, because here's
07:59going to be the thing.
08:00Does he want more than Josh Allen got total guarantee?
08:05Josh Allen got $250 million.
08:08Absolutely.
08:09Yeah.
08:09Okay.
08:10Would you, and I'm just...
08:11Did Sean Watson get over $250 million?
08:13No, no.
08:14Hey, he's in a battle with Shador Sanders right now.
08:17Take that.
08:17Both guys look great.
08:18Sean Watson got $230 million.
08:20Yeah.
08:20Oh, okay.
08:21Sorry.
08:22No.
08:23Right.
08:23But I guess the organization is going to look at it, and like they always do, they're going to go,
08:28all right, are you worth more than Josh Allen?
08:34He's younger.
08:35I agree with that.
08:36He got to MVP candidacy way faster than Josh Allen did.
08:40The contract conversation is very simple if I'm Drake May.
08:43I look at it and go, I'm worth more than Dak Prescott.
08:46Dak Prescott's getting $60 million a year.
08:48Right.
08:48I've already been to a Super Bowl.
08:49I was second in the MVP voting.
08:52Probably should have been the MVP.
08:53And then the team will come back, well, you're not worth more than Patrick Mahomes, who's getting $64 million a
08:58year.
08:59So you put him squarely in the middle.
09:00It's $62 million a year.
09:01Boom.
09:02Done.
09:02But it's not about the – it's about – so how much of that guarantee are you giving them?
09:07That's the money that matters.
09:09It depends how many years they want to put on the contract.
09:11Regardless, it's going to be –
09:12Josh Allen got six years.
09:13He got six years, $330 million.
09:16Right?
09:16That's what you have to look at.
09:17That's what Robert Kraft needs to look at.
09:19Robert Kraft needs to look at, all right, we're going to have to give this kid six years, call it
09:24$400 million.
09:26So he's going to get, yeah, like six years, $400 million.
09:30$270 million guaranteed.
09:33That's wild.
09:34Yep.
09:35That's where – I mean, if I'm Drake May's agent and he has another really good year, that's kind of
09:43where I'm starting.
09:45I'm looking at Josh Allen and he's – because he's kind of – and to me, it's all about the
09:50total guaranteed money.
09:52Josh Allen got $250 million, so we're going, all right, we want more than that.
09:55But do you think organizationally they're unable to grasp that they're going to have three high-paid guys on the
10:00football team?
10:01But A.J. Brown's not that high-paid, though, Grant.
10:04A.J. Brown's not that high-paid.
10:06Right.
10:06Like, this year he's $7 million.
10:08Next year it's $10 million.
10:09The year after, $17 million.
10:10And then he maxes out at $23 million.
10:12It's not even like you're paying $30 million a year for a receiver like a guy like Jamar Chase is
10:16getting or Jackson Smith and Jigba or Puka Nakula will get.
10:19But I also do say, to your point, Greg, is you would think, but look what they're doing with Gonzalez,
10:26right?
10:27When you start to factor that in, it's like, you should know if you believe this guy's one of the
10:33best corners in the league.
10:34He is.
10:36Why haven't you done this deal?
10:38Right.
10:38And that's why I'm asking the Patriots that, like, Elliott Wolfe said it.
10:42He's probably the best corner in the league.
10:44So why isn't the deal done?
10:46Maybe they feel like to get it done right now, they would have to really overextend themselves to make sure
10:51that he's the highest paid even above Witherspoon.
10:55You know, like, be proactive the way they were with the A.J. Brown capital offer.
10:59But why are they-
