This is the absurd true story of Barbados' deliberate own goal against Grenada at the 1994 Caribbean Cup.
Transcript
00:00There were only three minutes left in the game and they were winning 2-1, so they kicked the
00:04ball into their own goal. See, to advance to the finals, Barbados needed to win this game by two
00:10goals. Winning would give them the points they needed and two goals would put them ahead of
00:15Grenada on goal difference. So in the final minutes, as Barbados still needed another goal
00:20to advance, they remembered a strange new rule that had been added by the 1994 Caribbean Cups
00:25organizers. A goal scored in extra time counts as two goals and ends the game immediately.
00:32It was supposed to be a rule that made the qualification stages more exciting and unpredictable.
00:36Barbados knew that if they could tie the game and force extra time, they'd have another 30 minutes
00:42to score. Grenada quickly realized what Barbados were doing and so for three minutes of utter chaos,
00:48they tried desperately to score in either net to prevent extra time. However, Barbados successfully
00:54defended both goals, scored the golden double goal in extra time and they qualified for the finals.
