00:00It was the first time the USA had ever hosted the World Cup, and it seemed like a pretty dumb
00:05idea. In 1994, USA didn't even have a professional league at the time, so their ragtag team made up
00:12of mostly college and indoor soccer players was hardly world class. However, the US women's team
00:18had won the first ever women's World Cup only three years earlier, so the USA were hopeful they
00:23could ride on the back of the women's success and tackle the world game on the men's side too.
00:28However, they did get off to a bit of a rough start when Diana Ross lip-synced to a hit

00:33I'm Coming Out and then proceeded to completely shank a penalty shot, but the US team actually
00:38did surprisingly well despite the flack they got. They defeated Colombia during their group stage
00:43after Andreas Escobar scored an accidental own goal, which had its own unsettling repercussions.
00:49In the knockouts, USA put up a respectable 1-0 loss against the eventual champions Brazil,
00:54and at the time, the 1994 World Cup became the most watched sporting event in history.
