00:00This can't be the band that you want representing Scotland, right?
00:03Why would you come out with this?
00:04You'd rather have some Snow Patrol or, um, Frightened Rabbit or something like that?
00:10Everywhere we go, we have this.
00:12Before we enter a building, a party, a pub, you name it, we have the Proclaimers blasting 500 miles.
00:19Is there a song other than this? Like, in Scotland, did they have a backup hit?
00:23There's many, but, like, the words are very simple to remember when you've had a beer, so it works, it's
00:28universal.
00:30Well, it is Rich Ken, Ted Johnson, 93.7 WEI, and that is the voice of Kat Harvey, and she
00:36is from Scotland STV Radio,
00:37and she is here in America covering the Tartan Army, something I am learning all about right now, Ken.
00:44And by the way, our insider is presented by Fanatic Sportsbook.

00:56All right. So, okay. The Tartan Army.
00:59Kat, I have to tell you, until yesterday, I was saying, I don't feel like the World Cup is here,
01:05and I went walking down,
01:07I had to go to the Prudential yesterday, and it was Scottish accents everywhere I went.
01:10Yes.
01:11You guys roll deep.
01:12We do, and we party hard, and we're loud, and we're musical, and just for context, so at the Euros
01:18in 2024,
01:21Scottish fans were voted on German television as the best supporters of the Euros.
01:25Wow.
01:26The last time we were at a World Cup, and by the way, this is why we're going big and
01:29we're going hard,
01:30we haven't been at a World Cup for 28 years.
01:32Oh, yeah.
01:32That's true. Wow.
01:33Okay? 28 years.
01:34So, this is massive for us.
01:36So, there's, like, for, I mean, if you were 35 and under, you probably would never remember Scotland being at
01:41a World Cup.
01:42Sure.
01:42So, that's why everyone has sold their houses, they've left their families, they've basically done everything,
01:48they're skiving off work, they're here, and, yeah, we're in Boston for two games, which is incredible.
01:54Which is wild, and I think that hasn't, haven't you guys declared a bank holiday in Scotland for the first
01:59game?
02:00Yeah, we have, but it's two days after the game, which says it all.
02:04So, it's the hangover.
02:05Yeah, the game in our time, so it's Saturday night, your time, and it's 2 o'clock in the morning,
02:10our time.
02:10Oh, wow, so the game starts at 2 a.m., Scotland?
02:12Yeah, so it's a five-hour time difference, it's a big difference.
02:15So, you can imagine, everyone has to go to the pub at 2 in the morning.
02:19Oh, God.
02:19So, they're not getting home until 5 in the morning.
02:22But then the bank holiday's not that day, it's the next day.
02:24Oh, that's so great.
02:25So, yeah, that just shows you, it's a big, big thing for us, it really, really is.
02:29Alright, so, paint a picture for me of the Tartan Army.
02:31The Tartan Army, I mean, we're very colourful.
02:33Tartan, it's in the word, right?
02:35So, everyone in Scotland has a clan.
02:38Like, your name, your past, is linked to a clan, and each clan has its own Tartan.
02:44So, you'll see loads of men in kilts, which, if you're not familiar, is a kind of plaid skirt.
02:50Sure.
02:51But don't ever say that because it's for big Highlanders, do you know?
02:54Yeah.
02:54Have you seen Highlander or Braveheart?
02:57Oh, sure, of course.
02:58So, don't tell anyone that they're wearing a skirt.
03:00So, everyone has their own clan.
03:02So, most people will be wearing the Tartan that belongs to their family.
03:06And the thing is, the best thing about, you know, coming to America is, everybody has a Scottish grandpa, or
03:11a granny, or their auntie.
03:14Anywhere in the East Coast of America has a really strong connection to either Scotland or Ireland.
03:18Yeah.
03:19So, yes, the Tartan bit is that.
03:20The army is just because there's loads of us.
03:22Yeah.
03:22And there's, like, literally no trouble ever.
03:24We are very self-policing.
03:26We just like to have fun.
03:27Did I hear that they ran out of, like, liquor on one of the planes that everyone was coming on?
03:32No, no, no, no.
03:32They've run out of that on all the planes.
03:36Yeah, yeah.
03:37Oh, man.
03:38So, where are you staying?
03:39Is everybody congregated downtown, or just wherever you can find a place?
03:41No, to be honest, it's the whole East Coast of America.
03:44I mean, I have pals that flew into Chicago because it was, like, $100 cheaper.
03:48Now, like, you do know you have to get to Boston.
03:50So, I'm in a little Airbnb near Fenway Park.
03:54Oh, oh, that's nice.
03:55Which is cool.
03:56Yeah.
03:57And everybody else is just all over, scattered all over the place.
04:00But you'll find us.
04:01Yeah.
04:01We'll find you.
04:02Was it affordable, your Airbnb?
04:03No.
04:04Literally, I won't be able to put my heating on for the next 10 years when I go home.
04:09I've never, ever, and that's been the big thing, you know, looking at Siri's side of it.
04:13Yeah.
04:14We have never been to a tournament that's so expensive.
04:17Yeah.
04:17It's insane how expensive it is.
04:20From the, I guess, the cost of living here is really, really high.
04:23It is.
04:23For context, we can get, like, a pint of beer for under $5 at home.
04:28Yeah.
04:29And you're not getting that here.
04:30Oh, hell no, you're not.
04:31And also, like, in Scotland, we don't tip the way you tip.
04:34So, we're all getting, you know, like, tipping your server.
04:37Yeah, yeah.
04:38So, you guys don't.
04:39Well, you do.
04:40A general thing is, you would say 10% of the bill.
04:44Yeah.
04:44But over here, like, they chase after you and ask what's wrong if you don't leave that.
04:49It's 20% or you're just.
04:51Rich does $2 a drink, right?
04:53Two, three.
04:53I think if you're doing a drink, it's like $2 a drink.
04:56That's kind of the standard.
04:57That's what I'm trying.
04:58We all now know that.
04:59So, it's just trying to learn that.
05:01So, we're not being.
05:02We've just never done it before.
05:03Well, that was one of the things that there was complaints about because they filed something
05:08to have the bar stay open later.
05:10I think they usually close at 2, but now they're open until 3.
05:13Yeah.
05:13And a lot of the people are just like, hang on.
05:14A lot of people from, like, international travelers don't tip because it's in other countries.
05:19They don't tip as much.
05:20They don't tip as well.
05:21It's just not a thing.
05:22It's just not a thing.
05:23Yeah.
05:23I mean, we'll always leave 10% and stuff like that, but now we know, right?
05:26Okay.
05:27Because we now worked out.
05:28If you give them more, you get served faster.
05:30Oh, sure.
05:30Absolutely.
05:31I learn fast.
05:31You tip them big at the beginning.
05:33That's a Boston trick.
05:35You tip them big at the beginning and that way we remember you at the bar when you go
05:37back up there.
05:38Yeah, but what a city though.
05:38The welcome we've had so far.
05:40I've only been here a couple of days.
05:41Yeah.
05:41Everybody just wants to talk.
05:43Oh, good.
05:43I'm astonished though that not that many people know why we're here.
05:46Okay.
05:47So, that's what I wanted to ask you about.
05:48Yeah.
05:48Because we just played part of a report.
05:50Um, and I was saying this on the air yesterday is that I couldn't feel any kind of presence
05:56for the world cup.
05:57As a matter of fact, I went and picked up my son at the airport the other day and you
06:01know, we've had the super bowls are big thing here with football.
06:04And so, um, when you go to a super bowl city, when you land in the airport, I mean, you
06:09feel like it's, you're engulfed in ads and super bowl, this super bowl, that.
06:14And I went to the airport.
06:15There's like a sign or two, like nothing too crazy.
06:17And around town, I couldn't feel really anything.
06:21And it wasn't until I heard all the accents and the huge crowd in front of the hotel where
06:25Mbappe is, you know, and then I, I realized, oh yeah, I forgot the world cup is here.
06:30I need to point out.
06:31We are only just warming up.
06:33If you thought you heard singing yesterday, we're just, we're just warming up.
06:36All right.
06:37So how do you guys celebrate?
06:38Like, like, like, give me a, give me an example.
06:39Like if I was to stumble into, let's say they win, let's say Scotland wins their first
06:44game.
06:45Stumble was a good choice of words.
06:48Um, no, we, we do like to party.
06:50We do like a drink every now and again.
06:52Um, we don't win that often, but I mean, we've got, we've got a good team at the moment.
06:56You're the favorite on Saturday, right?
06:57I mean, um, yes, yes, but it's a difficult group because we're the only group in the whole world cup
07:02that's got two teams that are in the top 10, both of which are not us.
07:08So, but when we win, we go, we, I mean, we go for it.
07:11We really need to go for it.
07:12But, um, Scottish people are, you know, it's, it's the kind of Celtic way.
07:16We like storytelling.
07:17We love live music.
07:18Yeah.
07:18Um, so you'll find us anywhere that there's somebody with a guitar singing and we all join
07:22in.
07:22Okay.
07:23We love to sing.
07:24Excellent.
07:24Excellent.
07:25We don't have to be good at it.
07:26Yeah.
07:26Um, but also like to embrace, um, the local cultures and like, we'd like to go where you
07:31guys go.
07:32And we all want pictures with you.
07:34He's my new best friend from Boston.
07:37Well, you're going to be over towards, um, Fenway park tomorrow night.
07:40You know, the red Sox are back.
07:41So you'll get to see a decent amount of what they call a mass holes, which is people from
07:45mass holes.
07:46Yeah.
07:46From Massachusetts.
07:47They're mass holes.
07:48That's the people.
07:49Yeah.
07:50So make sure you go down there and you'll see like a decent amount of.
07:53Will I get into trouble if I call them a mass holes?
07:55No.
07:56It's a term of endearment.
07:57Yeah.
07:58Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:58Oh wow.
07:58Don't try that in Scotland.
08:01Well, we're actually, do you know about the big march on Sunday then?
08:03No, no, no.
08:04What is that?
08:04Okay.
08:05So there's a big march.
08:06So, um, the Boston Red Sox, um, there was so many Tartan army in town and obviously
08:10cause you've got us for 10 days.
08:12What do we do?
08:12We can't drink for, well, we could, but no, it's not very good for you.
08:16So for 10 days, we need to try and do something.
08:18And somebody in the Tartan army come up with the idea.
08:20Well, there's a baseball series on.
08:22Why don't we go and we'll go and take in a baseball game.
08:25Yeah, yeah.
08:25You're going to see some bad baseball.
08:27Oh, really?
08:27Sox stink.
08:28Well, listen, we know nothing about it.
08:30So we don't care.
08:32So you're going to go there just having no idea what's going on?
08:34We're going for the match experience.
08:34I went for a walk around the Fenway Park this morning and I just got goosebumps.
08:38I love old stadiums.
08:40Oh, it's great.
08:40You know that way?
08:41The stadium's great.
08:42I saw it and I just thought, oh my goodness, the memories and like sport is different,
08:46right?
08:47So like Scotland is a football country.
08:50It is.
08:50But it's family.
08:51It's friends.
08:52It's the memories to make.
08:53It's the people that you go with.
08:54It's like taking your kids and the fact that your dad took you and stuff like that.
08:58And I just got goosebumps outside that stadium.
09:00So you're now telling me it's going to be rubbish.
09:01No, the stadium is great.
09:03The team playing inside of it sticks.
09:05Oh, yeah.
09:05No, no, no.
09:05Fenway Park is unbelievable.
09:07It really is a great place to go see a game.
09:10But this is an all-time bad team.
09:12So on Sunday then, there's 5,000 Scottish people going to the Boston Red Sox game.
09:18That's great.
09:18That's awesome.
09:19And we have a march from, is it the Bays in Boston?
09:23The home plate?
09:24No.
09:25The Bays?
09:26Bay.
09:26Boston Bay.
09:27Oh, Back Bay?
09:28Back Bay.
09:28That's it.
09:29That's the general area.
09:30Which is like where I heard all the Scottish people yesterday.
09:33Or by the Prudential Mall.
09:34Yeah.
09:34So we have an official march that's been approved.
09:36Like with just basically lots of Scottish people walking along our street.
09:39Wow, that's great.
09:40Going to the baseball to watch the team that you're now telling me are rubbish.
09:45To have a night out.
09:47And I think it's the Texas Rangers thing.
09:48It is.
09:48Exactly.
09:49Very good.
09:49You're very well informed.
09:50So thank you.
09:51I googled.
09:51Are you worried about getting to the actual stadium Saturday night?
09:55Do you have plans like to how to get...
09:56You know it's not in the...
09:57Oh, for the football.
09:59For the football.
09:59It's way the hell out there.
10:00Yeah, yeah, yeah.
10:01Yeah, yeah.
10:01No, that's been an absolute nightmare to be honest.
10:03Because logistically, everyone's been planning for months for this World Cup.
10:08And again, the price of the train tickets quadrupled in the space of match day.
10:14Right.
10:14And that's not on.
10:16You know?
10:16That's not on?
10:17Well, it is.
10:18But it's not a good thing.
10:19Yeah, yeah, yeah.
10:20All right.
10:20Because the day before, I think the tickets were like $12 and it's like $80.
10:24It's $80, yeah.
10:25And hard to get to from Fenway.
10:26Now you have to get down to South Station, I would imagine, right, to get on the train.
10:29Yeah.
10:29So we'll have to draw you a map.
10:30This isn't real, is it, Stiz?
10:32Okay.
10:33So you were talking about the price of things.
10:34Yeah.
10:35Our producer, Stiz, he just sent me this thing from Boston Stadium, which is usually Gillette
10:40Stadium.
10:41Okay.
10:41Where are you guys going to be playing?
10:42Oh, don't tell me.
10:43If you want a thing of popcorn, it's $13.
10:47Like Disney on ice?
10:49For ice cream, it is $8.
10:52They don't want that.
10:52They want the beer.
10:53What's the beer price?
10:54It doesn't even have the beer on here.
10:56But I mean, beer's usually like $20 in a lot of these games.
10:58Are you picky about the beer?
10:59Does it matter?
11:00What do you think of the local beer?
11:02We drink anything.
11:03Okay.
11:06Sam Adams is the best.
11:08I've heard it's very good.
11:10Sam Adams, yes, I went, is that the, there's a pub with a nice beer garden that overlooks
11:15Quincy's Market?
11:15Yeah, that's true.
11:16I was recording stuff there earlier.
11:18Oh, nice.
11:18It seemed very good.
11:19Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:20My friend had a pint and thought it was lovely.
11:22You can go to the Bellingham.
11:25It's like the oldest, is that the oldest tavern, I think, in America?
11:28It's right down there.
11:29Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:30I've actually got you some Scottish goodies for you.
11:31What do you got?
11:32What do you got?
11:32You got some haggis?
11:33Well, there's actually, no.
11:34You're not allowed haggis.
11:35You know that?
11:36What?
11:37You banned it, not us.
11:39We banned it here?
11:40We banned Haggit?
11:41Really?
11:42I just don't even know what haggis is.
11:43I just know it's Scottish.
11:44What is it?
11:45It's like meat, isn't it?
11:46Which animal is it?
11:48It's, it's, it's the bits that you normally wouldn't eat.
11:51Yeah, okay.
11:51It's like testicles.
11:52No.
11:55I don't know what haggis is.
11:56I'm not coming to yours for dinner.
11:59We used to the parchment.
12:00I'll eat almost anything.
12:01We eat hot dogs.
12:02It's like awful.
12:02What is haggis?
12:02You know, your kidney and all that.
12:04Oh, okay.
12:05It's kind of mushed up and it's got oatmeal in it and pepper.
12:08And it's sheep?
12:09It's a sheep?
12:09It sounds disgusting.
12:10It was served in a sheep's stomach.
12:12Ah.
12:12Right?
12:12And it does sound disgusting, but it's actually really nice.
12:15Okay.
12:15It's like any kind of spicy sausage meat.
12:18Yeah.
12:18But yeah.
12:18But you banned it.
12:20American banned it.
12:20Oh boy, sorry about that.
12:21Oh, okay.
12:22It's not you guys.
12:23We didn't want to.
12:23Yeah, I don't know.
12:24So anyway, there you go.
12:26So the fun part of this is, yeah.
12:28And I like how you called it.
12:29It's not plaid.
12:30You pronounced it a different way.
12:31Plaid?
12:32Yeah, it's just a tartan.
12:33Yeah, it's like a chick.
12:34So this came from, the funny story is it came from VisitScotland who are our official
12:38tourist body.
12:39Oh, wow.
12:40And, um.
12:41Butter shortbread.
12:42Yeah, it's just, I'm just bribing you with sugar.
12:44What's this?
12:45Now this is.
12:45Is this a beer?
12:46It's not a beer.
12:47Oh, okay.
12:48So Iron Brew is Scotland's national drink.
12:50Wow.
12:51Iron Brew.
12:51Yeah.
12:52Okay.
12:52So.
12:53It's a soft drink?
12:54It's a soft drink.
12:54It's like a cola?
12:55It's a soft drink.
12:55It outsells cola and Pepsi.
12:57It's the only country in the world that the local drink outsells Pepsi and cola.
13:02Oh, okay.
13:03I didn't get you anything, so I will grab something from this.
13:05That's okay.
13:06I don't need stuff.
13:08Random beer.
13:09Random beer is great.
13:09Yeah, let's give her a beer.
13:10Can you take that?
13:11Tate of crisps?
13:12How about that?
13:13So it's just some Scottish goodies.
13:15Now, your accent I can understand, but there are some people that I cannot from Scotland.
13:19So how many, the people that are here in the Tartan army, are they all from different parts
13:22of the country?
13:23The whole country, yes.
13:24You'll tend to find the further north you go, the more, not difficult accent because
13:30it's a lovely accent, it's just there's regional variations.
13:33Are there some people that even you don't know what they're saying?
13:35I think I can now interpret.
13:37Okay.
13:37Do you have a hard time understanding some Americans?
13:40Like, do we sound strange?
13:41Not really, no, because we get so much American television and movies and things like that,
13:45so we're all quite used to it.
13:46Oh, sure.
13:47Yeah, yeah, yeah.
13:47I guess, are there certain words that are in English or not, like, you can't say or...
13:53Well, yeah, there's a really, we actually got, it was a really funny thing somebody put
13:56up on one of the Tartan army group chats, because in Scotland, a kind of colloquial term
14:02for a sandwich, like, as a piece, so it's like a piece with cheese or a piece with meat.
14:07Okay.
14:08And apparently in America, that's like a gun, is that correct?
14:10It can't be a gun, yeah.
14:12But then there's also, like, I got my side piece, you know, which is like a girlfriend
14:15on the side.
14:16We were, basically, we were told not to go through customs and tell them that you had,
14:20like, a piece in your bag that your mum had made for you or something.
14:24No, you definitely don't want to do that.
14:25There was a great word, I, when I heard you were coming on, I went to the website and I
14:30was
14:30watching some of the videos you guys had, and you used the word snog, which is that...
14:35Oh, a snog?
14:36Yeah, what is a snog?
14:37A snog is, oh my goodness, I did, what website were you watching?
14:41They were talking about going to the cave, like somebody called into your show and said,
14:44I remember Kat and I went to the cave.
14:46So, like, see when you would go to, like, a nightclub or a disco, and at the end of the
14:50night you had a kiss with somebody.
14:53Yeah.
14:53So just like a kiss.
14:54Oh, it's a snog?
14:55That's a snog.
14:55Okay.
14:56It sounds more vulgar than it actually is.
14:59No, it's quite innocent actually.
15:01Short Fred is great, thank you very much.
15:03Oh, you're welcome.
15:03Where is the team staying, by the way?
15:05Are they downtown somewhere?
15:05Uh, Charlotte, I think.
15:07Oh.
15:07Charlotte?
15:08Yeah.
15:08That's a long drive.
15:09That's like 20 hours, I think, from here?
15:11Yeah, I think they fly in.
15:12Oh!
15:13They're flying for the game and then go back to North Carolina?
15:15I think so, yeah.
15:16Wow!
15:16Really?
15:17That's unbelievable.
15:18They might have, no, they usually have like one night in the whole city.
15:20Yeah.
15:20Okay.
15:21And you'll tell because there's usually a big branded bus.
15:24Okay.
15:24All the kids go down and get them.
15:26Do you guys have a bus?
15:27You said you threatened to come in the Tartan bus or no?
15:29Oh, we have Tartan taxis.
15:30So it's not us, again, it's Visit Scotland who are just trying to promote Scotland to
15:34America because, hey, do you know that you're our number one visitors?
15:38Oh, really?
15:39Yeah.
15:39Did not know that.
15:40Yeah.
15:41If I wanted to go drink with some Scottish people, where would I go?
15:44Like, where would I go?
15:45In Scotland or here?
15:46Here.
15:46Like, where are you guys gathering?
15:47Like, I want to hang out.
15:48They're marching.
15:49Like, I want to be part of this.
15:50You want to be part of this?
15:51Yeah, I do.
15:52Well, you need to come downtown.
15:53Okay.
15:54I live downtown.
15:55Perfect.
15:56Well, we'll all come to your house then.
15:59Do your phones work here?
16:00You got it working?
16:01Yes.
16:01Okay, good.
16:01Yes, we're all good with that.
16:02Yeah.
16:03Why don't I drop you a pin later?
16:05Yes.
16:05And you can come and join us.
16:06I'm going to give you my number.
16:07I'm honestly going to take you up on this.
16:09I think you should.
16:10I want to hang out with the Tartan army.
16:11We're going to have fun.
16:12I mean, we do kind of gravitate to Irish bars.
16:15Love it.
16:16But anywhere that's got live music.
16:18Isn't that a rivalry with Ireland or no?
16:20No, because we're both kind of Celtic countries.
16:22So, like, Ireland, Wales, and Scotland are all much of, you know, we all go on.
16:26Okay, good.
16:27But not England.
16:27There's a couple great Irish bars downtown.
16:30Yeah, of course.
16:31Well, that's a great rivalry, isn't it?
16:33Yeah, yeah, of course.
16:33Scotland, England.
16:33Okay.
16:34Yeah.
16:35Okay.
16:35Drop me.
16:36Because I know some good Irish bars that you would love.
16:39Fantastic.
16:40I feel like this is like sharing culture.
16:43Yes.
16:45That's a good question.
16:46All right.
16:46So what should we expect from the game?
16:48Is the team any good?
16:49Well, you know, we've got the best team I think we've had in a long time.
16:53We've got a lot of players that play in the English Premiership, which is probably one of the best leagues
16:56in the world.
16:57Mm-hmm.
16:58We've got a player called Scott McTominay, who was nominated for the Ballon d'Or, which is basically the best
17:04players in the world.
17:05Okay.
17:05So we've never really had that for a long, long time.
17:07So he's really good.
17:09He plays for Napoli.
17:10We've got players that play in Serie A, you know, the big Italian league as well.
17:13So I think, truthfully, if we finish third and get out the group, that's amazing.
17:19That would be amazing.
17:20Because Scotland, this is our ninth World Cup, as I said, the first one in 28 years, but we have
17:24never, ever get out the group stages before.
17:27Awesome.
17:27And would you stay? Would you, like, find the money to stay somehow and go wherever it is? Yeah.
17:32I'd sell my flat. I'll move in with you guys.
17:36Yeah. Come on in.
17:38Why the hell not?
17:38Well, the Boston hospitality is so good, somebody will put me up. It'll be fine.
17:41Sure. No question.
17:43All right. Well, Kat, as I said, I now have an official, like, a favourite team I'm rooting for in
17:47this whole thing.
17:48Oh, please do, because we do need backing from everybody, and we're a nice bunch.
17:53Yeah, you certainly are.
17:53As I said, we've never got out the group stages before, so, you know, come on. Root for the under.
17:57Excellent. Well, Kat Harvey from Scotland STV Radio.
18:00Presented by Fanatic Sportsbook. Winning hits different here, Rich.
18:03That's right. And she is with the, she's covering the Tartan Army, who's here, and the, of course, your Scottish
18:09team.
18:10Thank you so much, Kat, for coming in.
18:11It's been an absolute blast. Thank you so much. I look forward to it.
18:14If you win, you've got to come back on with us, all right?
18:16Oh, no bother. Yes, absolutely.
