00:00Pope Leo XIV began a deeply symbolic leg of his visit to Spain on Thursday, arriving in
00:05the Canary Islands with a clear focus on the migration crisis.
00:08After being welcomed at the airport by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, the pontiff traveled
00:13to the dock at Arginagin in Gran Canaria, one of Europe's main entry points for migrants
00:17crossing from Africa.
00:19There he met with migrants, volunteers and humanitarian organizations working on the
00:23ground.
00:24Leo XIV warned that Europe must not grow accustomed to the sea becoming what he called a cemetery
00:29without gravestones and called for greater cooperation between countries of origin, transit
00:35and destination to protect migrant safety and dignity.
00:38Human dignity has no passport, he said.
00:41The Pope also stressed the urgent need to open safe and legal routes for migrants, to strengthen
00:46reception systems and to crack down on the criminal networks profiting from human trafficking.
00:51As a final gesture at the Arginagin docks, Leo XIV threw a bouquet of flowers into the sea,
00:58a tribute to the countless migrants who never completed the crossing.
