Pope Leo XIV calls for 'end to polarisation' as he makes the first papal visit to Spain in 15 years

The pontiff is set to deliver a mass in the centre of Madrid before moving elsewhere in Spain to Barcelona and the Canary islands. Pope Leo XIV is also expected to deliver an unprecedented address to the Spanish parliament, where immigration is expected to take centre stage.

00:00Pope Leo XIV called on Spain to, quote,
00:04stop fanning the flames of polarization in an address in Madrid
00:07as he began his week-long and first papal visit to the country in 15 years.
00:12In his first address, Leo thanked Spain for its commitment to peace
00:16and adherence to international law
00:18after the Iberian nation became one of Europe's loudest voices
00:22disapproving of the U.S.-Israeli war in Iran
00:25and previously calling out Israeli aggression in Gaza.
00:29The U.S.-born Pope was received at the Royal Palace in Madrid
00:32by King Philippe VI and Queen Letizia.
00:35He later visited Catholic charities
00:37and led a prayer vigil near Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu Stadium
00:41filled with hundreds of thousands of mostly young people.
00:45On Sunday, the pontiff is set to lead a major mass in the capital center
00:49and then deliver an unprecedented address to Parliament
00:53before traveling elsewhere around Spain.
00:56Leo is expected to make a pit stop in Barcelona
00:59where he'll bless the new tower of the Sagrada Familia Basilica.
01:03He will then travel to the Canary Islands on Thursday for a two-day visit
01:07where he'll be joined by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez
01:10to honor the thousands of migrants who have died
01:12making their way over to Europe.
