00:03Maybe you think, no, life isn't that hard.
00:06Not only is it that hard, it's even harder than you think.
00:14So, you're going to be tested, that's for sure.
00:17And if you have a sustaining meaning, then there's, well, Nietzsche said himself,
00:24he who has a why can bear any how.
00:27Why would you look in the darkest places?
00:30Because in the darkest places, you can find what still shines.
00:33If it can shine in the darkest places, then you know it's a real light.
00:37And so you look at the things you don't want to look at.
00:39You have to look at the things you don't want to look at.
00:42Well, why do meaningful things?
00:44Well, first of all, what is meaning?
00:47But then why do meaningful things?
00:48And the answer is, well, because life is suffering and malevolence.
00:54It's ineradicable at its core.
00:56It's like, that will take you out.
00:58Don't, make no mistake about it.
01:00You need something to, you need to be armed with virtue in order to, for that not to turn
01:07into hell.
01:09Really, you really need that.
01:11And it isn't just your hell, that's bad enough.
01:13And that can be really bad, especially when you're contributing to it, right?
01:18Because then not only are you suffering, but you know you're the agent that's producing the suffering.
01:22And then maybe that's not just for you.
01:24It's like you're taking out your family.
01:25If you're really good at it, you're taking out large swaths of your community.
01:29That's hell.
01:30It's like, and that's real.
01:31And no one with any sense and any experience has any doubt that that's real.
01:36And then they all can easily think of how, even though it's already bad, you could make
01:41it way worse.
01:42Everyone knows that.
01:43So what's the bulwark against that?
01:45Nobility of purpose.
01:47That's it.
01:49You have that, then you can, then, then you have something to set against the suffering and
01:55the malevolence.
01:56And you need, it isn't optional.
01:58That's not optional.
01:59You cannot live without it.
02:01The meaning is not optional.
02:02Well, that's why it's such a deep instinct, right?
02:05It's an instinct, meaning it's the instinct of life.
02:09My life is meaningless.
02:10It's the spirit has gone out of you.
02:12It's like, well, but, and you know, the modern people, it's part of this process of criticism.
02:16We've criticized the idea of meaning so much that we don't really believe in it anymore.
02:20It's like, well, that's fine.
02:21You can not believe it, but try living without it.
02:23See how far you get with that.
02:25You need a reason to get out of bed on a terrible day.
02:29Okay.
02:30What's that reason going to be?
02:31Well, let's think it through.
02:34You know people who can get out of bed on a terrible day.
02:37Do you admire them?
02:38Yes.
02:39What are those people like?
02:40Are they taking responsibility for themselves?
02:43Definitely.
02:44Do they have excess capacity, so they're taking responsibility for other people?
02:48Yeah.
02:49Are they doing difficult things?
02:51Yes.
02:52Obviously.
02:53The more you respect them, the more you also see that they're doing difficult things and
02:57doing them well.
02:58So what does that mean?
02:59Do some difficult things.
03:01Do them well.
03:03So pick up your goddamn burden and walk up the hill.
03:07So, yep, I get it.
03:10And people do get it.
03:11And it's not surprising because that is the alternative to hell.
03:17Accept the burdensome condition of suffering voluntarily.
03:22And you transcend it.
03:25It's like, you've got a problem with the world?
03:27Hey, man, no wonder you have a problem with the world.
03:30Like, the world is a pretty rough place.
03:32And it could use some work.
03:34It's like, have you done all your work?
03:36If the answer to that is no, then I would say, put in order what you can put in order.
03:41It's like, well, you have a problem.
03:43Okay, what's the problem?
03:45What are its constituent elements?
03:46What are the smallest implementable steps that we could take to start to address the problem?
03:52Implement the best plan that you have at hand.
03:55That's it.
03:56You'll learn.
03:56It won't be the right plan.
03:58It doesn't matter.
03:59You'll learn.
04:00Implementing that plan, you'll learn a whole bunch.
04:01And then the next plan you make will be better.
04:04Implement the best plan you have at hand.
04:06Don't remain in stasis.
04:08You get old way, way faster than you think.
04:12Time ticks away, man.
04:13Get at it.
04:14Get out there in the world.
04:15Have your adventure.
04:17Get the hell out there.
04:18Do something.
04:19Fail.
04:20Fail while you're trying.
04:22Then you'll learn why you failed.
04:24Then you won't have to fail again.
04:25It's like, aim at something and progress towards it.
04:30And, you know, be willing to change your aim because what the hell do you know?
04:33But aim at something.
04:35And then at least you're oriented.
04:37And you have to aim at something that you believe would be worth trying.
04:42So, yeah, get at it, man.
04:44Don't waste time.
