Drake Maye has looked good at Patriots minicamp. Rich, Ken, and Ted recap Day 2.
Transcript
00:01Drake May, right now, there's several writers who are foaming at the mouth over this guy.
00:06And I don't blame him because, I mean, this is supposed to be, not only is this supposed to be
00:09the year that, you know, most quarterbacks, you know, go next level.
00:13In Josh Allen, it was year three, and there's a lot of other quarterbacks you can point to and say
00:16year three is the year that if you are a talented quarterback, the game slows down for you.
00:21This is technically his third year.
00:22Yep, so this is technically it, and it's his second year with Josh McDaniels, which I think is even more
00:26important than it being his third year.
00:27Correct, I agree.
00:28So, Phil Perry, who I like a lot.
00:31My man.
00:32He was obviously, and he stars on the TV show with you.
00:34That's right.
00:35With the breakdown?
00:36The breakdown, Mondays in the fall.
00:37You make complicated stuff good for idiots like me to understand.
00:41Thanks, bud.
00:42That's probably the best.
00:42A lot of work in that show.
00:44My favorite, though, is when Ted and Phil literally reenact a play, and it's like, Ted will have Phil in
00:49like a headlock.
00:50Like, all right, this is how you do it right now.
00:52And then he shoved his head in the locker, and then he did that.
00:54So fun.
00:55So, Phil Perry wrote, it's early in year two of the Josh McDaniels offense, but Drake May is getting an
01:00opportunity to exhibit real ownership of the operation.
01:03In yesterday's practice, there were two plays where May hurried to the line, then assessed what was in front of
01:08him, and called his own play.
01:10Yep.
01:10Quarterback coach Ashton, that's what we're talking about.
01:12Like, the game slows down.
01:14Audible, you got it.
01:15Quarterback coach Ashton Grant says that's something that the coaching staff, specifically Mike Vrabel and Josh McDaniels, have wanted to
01:21give May as he grows in the system.
01:23Quote, let's just go on the ball and not give Drake a play and let him practice solving the problems
01:29himself in which he is succeeding.
01:32Very nice.
01:33That is, I mean, obviously, that's, you know, you think of Brady, and that was what he was best at,
01:38being able to go to the line.
01:39Like, just, I can't, just, Drake May's abilities and skill set with the brain of a Tom Brady, can you
01:48imagine, like, that's just, my mind's blown.
01:50I can't imagine what that looks like.
01:51Like, see, he's going to be so much smart.
01:53He's going to go up there with options.
01:54He didn't have that before at first.
01:57You basically, here's the call, go up and run it.
01:59If they're in a defense that you feel like, you know, that it might hurt you, then you can check
02:04into a run.
02:05Now, he's going to go up there, and he's going to have two or three different plays that he can
02:09change into to get, based on what the defense is showing.
02:13And so, when his brain catches up to his ability, oh, my goodness.
02:17It's going to be awesome.
02:18Yeah, that's going to be fun to see.
02:19Now, Drake spoke after practice today, and he was kind of talking up A.J. Brown.
02:23Now, it's a short clip, but I think you can hear the excitement in his voice, Stiz, if you have
02:26that one.
02:27The best thing about him, he's been a winner.
02:28You know, he knows what it's like to win, and he just adds something in that room that you really,
02:32you know, kind of, we were kind of looking for.
02:35And I think that's the best thing.
02:36You know, I think Steph provided it for us last year, and there's been guys that are growing in their
02:39roles.
02:40But just coming in with that stature and his ability and his size and just the respect that you walk
02:45in there with that kind of Steph had, A.J.'s got it, too.
02:47Is this going to be one of those things, like, with Brady, where you would see him and, like, videos
02:51of him and A.J. Brown on vacation together?
02:53I hope so.
02:54Yeah, I mean, that would be nice.
02:54I would love it.
02:55But isn't Gonzalez going on vacation with the Crafts to get that contract done?
02:58Hey, if he's smart, he would.
03:02Gonzalez is going around asking all the other, you know, Carlton Davis, hey, you feel like going down to Miami
03:07and golfing with the owner?
03:08Get out of here, man.
03:10Craft got me game four tickets to the Knicks.
03:11Dude, I'm telling you, man, it worked, though.
03:15I got my big deal, man.
03:17You know what?
03:18I'd do it all over again.
03:19It worked for them.
03:19The Stephon Diggs thing came up, too, because I don't think any of us – am I wrong in thinking
03:23that?
03:24I don't think any of us believe that Stephon Diggs, there's a future for him with the Patriots this year.
03:28He didn't – Brable was interesting.
03:29He went on and on about it today.
03:31He did not rule it out.
03:32He did not.
03:32It sounded doubtful, but he said –
03:35I wish he just said – I wish he just said we moved on so we can stop talking about
03:39Stephon Diggs.
03:40I just think it's not going to happen.
03:41Let's play the clip because – to be honest, I read the quote, but I want to hear how it
03:45sounded.
03:45Do you guys ever consider bringing Diggs back?
03:48I mean, I think we've – probably at the number that we would need right now, I wouldn't say anything
03:53is off the table.
03:54We would want to add anybody that could help us.
03:56So I'm not going to give a percentage on it, but I think we're happy with where we're at right
04:01now with the numbers and the people in the receiver room.
04:04I appreciate Stephon as a person and as a player and what he did for us last year.
04:10I'll value that.
04:11Helped us win football games.
04:13Helped us get to where we got.
04:14But right now, I don't think that that's something that I think we're exploring, but I would never say no.
04:22You didn't have to say it at the end.
04:23He's moved on.
04:24They are not –
04:25He's moved on unless somebody gets hurt.
04:28Yes, yes.
04:28Yes, unless somebody gets hurt.
04:29Correct.
04:30Yep.
04:30But to me, doesn't it seem like it would just complicate things to have him here?
04:35Don't you just want A.J. Brown to just be the guy?
04:38I don't know because I don't know where – like Steph, maybe he looks at – he was not the
04:42same Steph he was five years ago.
04:44Sure.
04:44You know, he's chilled out.
04:45Maybe he's mellowed.
04:45He's like, he doesn't have to be this top dog, and he just wants to come in and, hey, man,
04:49just help this team.
04:50So you never know where his mindset is.
04:52Is Diggs a better slot receiver than Pop Douglas?
04:55I would –
04:56So there you go.
04:57I mean, it's a –
04:57He is on shorts intermediate.
04:58I mean, Pop's the deep, but yeah, I would way rather have Steph Diggs in the slot.
05:02So if he's your three, if it's like Brown, Dobbs, and Steph, that's a great trio right there.
05:07That gets me excited.
05:09That would fire me up.
05:10That would be – ooh, I like that.
05:12And then Matt Collins is your four, or basically like a tight end or something.
05:14I think Matt Collins is better than what people think.
05:17I think he could be the three here.
05:18He's good.
05:19He's kind of a two-year deal, though.
05:20You think he's like a guarantee to make the – I heard Wiggy talk about this this morning.
05:23He doesn't think Mack's a lock.
05:24What?
05:25He thinks they could.
05:26There's just –
05:26No, no, he's a lock.
05:27I think he's a lock.
05:28Okay.
05:28Because I think he's – I think he's kind of a glue guy.
05:31I think he – like his –
05:33Shoeless Matt Collins.
05:34Dude, he's a beast catching balls over the middle.
05:37No, I like him too.
05:38I just – it doesn't seem like he's featured now.
05:40They had – you know, what's his name?
05:42Booty running with the first team yesterday.
05:44By the way, Booty sounded really – do we have his sound clip by any chance?
05:48When he was asked about – this wasn't today.
05:50It was yesterday.
05:51When he was asked about his contract, it was really weird.
05:55It didn't sound like he really wanted to be here if you took a listen to it.
05:59He sounded better with Roach before camp.
06:01Yeah.
06:01And then he showed up, you're right, and it was different.
06:03It was kind of a different vibe.
06:04It was almost like a, hey, man, if they want me here, great.
06:07In other words, hey, if there's another team that wants me
06:10and wants me in a bigger role, I'll take it.
06:12Is this it right here?
06:13I mean, I wouldn't mind being here.
06:14I do want to be here, obviously.
06:16But, I mean, at the end of the day, like I said, I do want to be here.
06:19So whether that's X, Z, F, like just whatever I got to do, that's best for me.
06:24You know?
06:25So whether it's learning to play a little more, moving around,
06:27I mean, it's only one football.
06:29It's five of us, you know?
06:30But that's football at the end of the day.
06:31It tells you everything.
06:32Yeah.
06:33It tells you everything.
06:33Dude, the first thing he said was, I wouldn't mind being here.
06:37Yeah.
06:37I wouldn't mind it.
06:38We say X, Z, and then F.
06:40F is the fullback.
06:41So I don't know if he'd be a good fullback.
06:43But, dude, he doesn't seem engaged.
06:46No.
06:46Like in those comments.
06:47But he got some wrong with the ones.
06:49So maybe, I don't know.
06:52If they can't trade him, what are they going to do with him?
06:54Use him.
06:55Well, then they got to get him, you know, engaged mentally.
06:59Burt Breer said yesterday on NBC that if they could have gotten a fifth for him,
07:03they would have traded him.
07:04But they couldn't.
07:05Damn.
07:05They couldn't.
07:06They could not get one.
07:06He drafted in the sixth round.
07:07He's good enough for a fifth, though.
07:09What does that say about it?
07:10That's what people think about Kayshawn Booty, man.
07:12I think he's better than that.
07:14I don't know what's going on behind the scenes.
07:15I think he's limited what he can do.
07:16I think he's a one-trick pony.
07:19That trick was nice.
07:20I was about to say, pretty good trick.
