Cincinnati Bengals Safety Bryan Cook on Offseason Workouts and Leadership
Transcript
00:00A few months in being around the guys, so just the chemistry is building.
00:05I'm definitely happy about that.
00:06As far as the camaraderie, I mean, the sky's the limit for us.
00:10For the playbook for me, I'm definitely grasping that as well.
00:13So yeah, yeah, for sure, I'm definitely getting comfortable for sure.
00:16What are the biggest objectives to the practice for you and
00:19for the secondary groups in general?
00:22Really just building chemistry.
00:23Becoming more knowledgeable about the playbook, understand nuances.
00:28Being able to compete now against the offense.
00:30So we have to see things live and make real life corrections as well.
00:35So that's kind of the basis and then building a foundation, moving to camp and
00:40moving to the season.
00:41But we all know good teams start now, not when the season starts.
00:45So building those things now is definitely vital for our season.
00:49What do you think is great that you've been seeing during this early on?
00:52The identity?
00:55That's kind of too early to say.
00:59Definitely stingy though, as far as defensive-wise.
01:02Offensive-wise, I mean, y'all know what they can do.
01:04So we're more just trying to make sure to get them the ball back as much as possible.
01:09But defensive-wise, for sure, being stingy across the board, I'd rather be the run game,
01:13pass game, no matter what it is.
01:14And then give the offense the opportunity to go there and score more points.
01:18Can you see or tell anything from Joe Burrow right now, observations?
01:23Just a real down-to-earth guy.
01:25Outside of football, down-to-earth guy.
01:27You know, he's very humble for who he is.
01:30Definitely a good leader, a great leader, even a better person.
01:34So shout out to him.
01:35And just all around, just a solid dude, man.
01:38On the field?
01:39On the field, yeah, yeah.
01:40He's a competitor.
01:41You know what I'm saying?
01:41Competitor.
01:41You know, obviously different when we had competitions years in.
01:45You know, obviously he's been in the league and played for a different team.
01:47But now seeing it day in and day out, you know, definitely a competitor and I'm happy to be
01:51part of this team, part of this organization to compete against him, especially with this
01:55duration.
01:56We have, what, career practices and then we have training camp as well.
01:59So yeah, man, trying to soak up as much energy, soak up as much energy, I mean, not energy,
02:04but information as well from him and kind of just understand, pick his brain about a few
02:10things.
02:11And then just pick up on, you know, how he feel on certain days.
02:14You know what I'm saying?
02:14At the end of the day, you know, we're all leaders and he's definitely one of our biggest
02:17leaders.
02:17But at the same time, we got to make sure that, you know, he's not perfect.
02:21You know what I'm saying?
02:21He's a human being.
02:23So if you come in, you know, having a lower day, we got to be able to pick him up.
02:27You know what I'm saying?
02:27That makes a great team.
02:28You know what I'm saying?
02:29You can just put everything on the leader's shoulder.
02:30That's how it'll end up well.
02:32He's one of the guys that's been vocal about you and your leadership.
02:37With wearing a C, is that a goal of yours?
02:39I want to win games, bro.
02:41Yeah.
02:42Whether that's the study of you or me or not, I mean, I'm here to do one thing, one
02:45thing only.
02:45I'm here to win games.
02:47I'll definitely be appreciative, for sure, and I'll wear it with a badge of honor.
02:51But that's not my main focus, no.
02:53How tough is it to come in and take over a leadership role with a bunch of new faces
02:58where you're not integrated yet?
03:01I mean, the hardest part is really just learning the guys.
03:04Being a leader, I mean, it's either you got it or you don't.
03:07Not only in any arrogant way, but more just like I have my dark necks, I have my situations
03:12myself as far as, you know, having those pick myself up conversations or being real myself
03:18too and humbling my own self as well.
03:20So, being a leader is more about how you walk and how you talk.
03:23But learning the guys, that ultimately determines the great leader.
03:26Because now, how can I say certain words to certain guys to get them to react a certain
03:31way?
03:32And every person is different.
03:34So, I might say one thing, for instance, to Jordan Battle that might say different to
03:37Deja.
03:37I might say different to Dax.
03:38I might say different to DJ Turner.
03:39You know what I'm saying?
03:40So, learning the guys and learning what triggers them and make them, you know, go ultimately
03:45becomes a great leader.
03:46I think that's why Joel Burrow is so great at what he does.
03:48What do you learn?
03:50What characteristics or traits do you think will help this team to be in that position
03:58when it's all set?
03:59Yeah.
04:00I mean, kind of go back to what I said before.
04:02Like, the chemistry is a big, big part because at the end of the day, you know, the best team
04:08is going to win that day.
04:09You know what I'm saying?
04:09I don't care who your players is, if everybody's not on a single court, it can be dicey.
04:14So the chemistry I feel like we are building right now is very vital to our success.
04:21And then, like I said, trust, all those things going to be in a great team.
04:24Yeah, we can draw X's and O's, we can dice them up, stuff like that, but ultimately it
04:27comes down to, hey, do I trust what I'm doing?
04:29Do I know what I'm doing?
04:30And trust the guy next to me.
04:31That's what we're building right now.
04:33So, we've been good.
04:34I'm very excited for the season, but that's where we started as far as our foundation, for sure.
04:38What are your observations about Jordan and Kyle Duggar so far?
04:43Oh, real good.
04:43You know, Jordan, he's real energetic.
04:47Yeah, real energetic.
04:48And then, you know, Kyle more laid back.
04:49So, like, prime example, the different guys I have to make talk to differently as far as
04:53such situations.
04:55But then, real down-to-earth guys, you know, very excited to get here and get to work.
05:00They're both leaders as well.
05:01You know, sometimes, like, lead by example, one of them, like, actually say something.
05:05But, man, it's great individuals, great individuals.
05:08How are they guys?
05:08Well, here we have some teachers.
