On The Midday Show, Andy and Randy discuss the fallout from the Brenden Sorsby ruling and what it means for the NCAA moving forward. With another challenge to the organization's authority, they examine whether the NCAA has any realistic path to regaining control in an era defined by NIL, the transfer portal, and constant legal battles.
Transcript
00:00Obviously, the Brendan Soresby ruling yesterday that came out.
00:04We'll get his thoughts on that for sure because I know he has many, many thoughts on that.
00:08So we'll get to B.A. on that one in about an hour.
00:10I didn't know that Jeffrey Kessler was his lawyer.
00:12Yeah.
00:13Oh.
00:14Yeah.
00:15Oh.
00:16Yeah, they hired the big guns.
00:17Yeah, Jeffrey is the best.
00:19Yeah, he's the best.
00:21He's done so much with the NFLPA and different players.
00:25He's beat the NCAA so many times in so many different cases.
00:28Yeah, he's the man.
00:30So, yeah, I'm not surprised.
00:31I didn't know Jeffrey was his lawyer.
00:32Yeah, it was him and the other guy.
00:35I think his last name is Johnson.
00:36I don't remember.
00:36But, yeah, those two guys have worked on a ton of different lawsuits against the NCAA on behalf of players.
00:42Obviously, like you said, the NFL Players Association as well.
00:45Like, they're the guys to find.
00:46Because they didn't argue that, like, it's okay that Brendan Soresby gambled.
00:50They came up with a defense where it's like maybe there's an argument that this could be argued in the
00:57future
00:57and maybe this one judge would agree with us who happens to be in Lubbock, Texas.
01:01Because that's what an injunction is.
01:02Like, they didn't prove anything.
01:04They got one guy to be like, yeah, maybe.
01:05And then eventually they can make the argument down the road, which probably will never happen.
01:09Because it'll be – what they're doing is really, again, like, I hate every part of it, including what I'm
01:14about to say.
01:15But it's great lawyering.
01:16Like, they're great lawyers.
01:18What they're doing is they're using the slowness of the legal system versus the speed of the college football calendar
01:28against them, which is brilliant.
01:29But there's nobody outside of Jeffrey that could have got this right here.
01:33That's how good this guy is.
01:34This guy is – he's – well, I don't know who paid his fee.
01:39I do.
01:40Cody Campbell.
01:41Yeah, I'm about to say it.
01:42Because, like, he's like 10 an hour probably or something like that.
01:47Yeah, Cody's buying a lot of stuff.
01:49Yeah, he's like 10 an hour.
01:49Which is like, look, I mean, you know, we could do all that.
01:52And we did a little bit of that yesterday for sure.
01:53And it'll continue to be talked about, the decision that was made.
01:57I think everyone – that's the thing.
01:58It's unified college football.
01:59That's for sure.
02:00Everyone's in agreement that this is insane.
02:02Well, I mean, you're in a situation now where you're talking about teams and commissioners and coaches.
02:08Talking about not playing Texas Tech.
02:11You believe them?
02:13The ones that aren't in the Big 12?
02:14Yes.
02:15Do you?
02:15Yes.
02:15I think they're all –
02:16Because they're all –
02:18Because here's the thing now.
02:20Rattling sabers.
02:21Here's – damn it.
02:23I think they're a bunch of blowhards.
02:26I don't believe any of those guys.
02:27No offense, but –
02:28But, no, here's the thing now.
02:30Texas Tech has always been a football school.
02:32Texas Tech is in a football business now.
02:34Yeah, but Texas Tech's never been, like, a great football school.
02:37No, but they've been a football school.
02:39For sure.
02:40But they're in the business because they got Cody now.
02:42Oh, yeah, right.
02:43And so they're in the business of football now.
02:45And when you're in the business of football and you got the muscle – and when I say muscle, I
02:49mean money.
02:50Yeah.
02:50To go behind that like they have.
02:52Yeah.
02:52So he is trying to – who's the big dogs right now?
02:58It's the SEC commissioner and it's the Big Ten.
03:00He wants to be one of them.
03:01Well, he is.
03:02That's what I'm saying.
03:03He is.
03:03He's bigger than the Big 12 commissioner.
03:06Oh, without question.
03:07Without question.
03:07And that's crazy.
03:08I mean, if you look at some of the provisions that were written into that bill that they put out
03:13last week, that's all him.
03:14Like that's all – like collectively bargaining, the media rights across the board in college football has been his big
03:21thing the whole time.
03:22There's all kinds of Cody Campbell stuff in that bill.
03:25Like he's lobbied his ass off to try to get this stuff approved, paid those lawyers to get his quarterback
03:31there, put up the $5 million to get the quarterback to transfer there.
03:34I mean, put up so much money over the last couple of years that they were in the college football
03:37playoff last year.
03:38Because that's the thing.
03:39Like Texas Tech has been a football school for sure.
03:41And there's been some – I mean, they've got like a – they've got a history and they've got like
03:45a – even like a culture.
03:47You know, it's like, oh, they're always pretty fun on offense.
03:49Every once in a while a quarterback's going to come through there and maybe get some Heisman votes because he
03:53puts up numbers.
03:54And there was the Mike Leach era.
03:55No one ever hated them.
03:56No.
03:57Like it was – they were always kind of fun.
03:58They were fun too.
03:58It was like, all right, Texas Tech's on.
04:00They scored 60 points.
04:00Just watch it.
04:01Yeah.
04:02Now everybody hates them.
04:03Hates them.
04:03And that happened overnight.
04:05Like I can't remember a team or a program or whatever this is going from what they kind of were.
04:11Which is like, oh, hell yeah, Texas Tech.
04:12Run and shoot.
04:13We love it.
04:15And now it's like, God, I hate those guys.
04:16We're not even going to play them.
04:18Yeah, but that's what I'm saying.
04:19We're not going to play them.
04:19I mean, it's like – it's a crazy thing because you're like, as weak as they are, the NCAA's got
04:28to go back to court.
04:30Yeah, they have to.
04:30You have to.
04:31You have to.
04:32You can't take that kind of ass whooping, Andy.
04:34Yeah.
04:34You can't.
04:35Like they got away with the number one thing.
04:40The rule that everyone knows you cannot do.
04:42One.
04:42The golden rule in sports.
04:44What is it?
04:44Not just college sports.
04:45Sports.
04:45Sports.
04:46You can't bet on your own team.
04:47You can't.
04:48And every other league in the world that plays sports agrees on this.
04:53If someone in the – and again, I understand that I'm glossing over some of the details here, but I
04:58think I have to to sort of drive home how ridiculous it is.
05:01If any player in any other sports league in America did this, they'd be banned.
05:06Yes.
05:06They wouldn't play.
05:07But that's what I'm saying.
05:08You – they got their pants pulled down after they got in the pool.
05:11Yeah.
05:12Yeah.
05:12That's what happened.
05:13And it was cold in that pool.
05:14It was cold in that pool.
05:15Yeah.
05:15That's what happened.
05:15And everybody's looking.
05:16Yep.
05:17And like pointing and laughing.
05:18Shrinkage.
05:19Yes.
05:19Because you just got demolished.
05:24Yeah.
05:24Yeah.
05:25And that's the crazy thing about it.
05:26So, I mean, even if you – even if a judge upholds this judge who is just his little –
05:33this should be a term.
05:36Anyways.
05:38He's going to have sideline passes all year.
05:40I'm talking about this dude.
05:41Now, apparently he's a Houston grad who's the team that Texas Tech plays in the first game that Soresby comes
05:46back, which I don't know why he would want – that's kind of a conflict.
05:49But anyway, yeah, he'll be in them.
05:51Yeah.
05:51He'll be in the suite on Saturdays.
05:53No doubt.
05:54If he wants to be.
05:55Here's the – here's one thing that is – has Abe brought up, has been starting over the last 24
06:00hours with this, or maybe it's more today, is now people are kind of more doing like the Soresby isn't
06:07that good anyway stuff.
06:08No.
06:08Like, why don't they paid him $5 million to go there.
06:11Here's what I'll say.
06:11No, he's a good player.
06:12Because you asked me this yesterday.
06:13Is this going to hurt his draft stock?
06:15Maybe, if he plays bad.
06:16If he plays good throw through this whole thing, then they're going to do that.
06:20Look how mentally tough he is.
06:21A guy that dealt with all of this scrutiny and the microscope of the sports world on him, and he
06:27was still able to persevere.
06:29Again, I don't give –
06:31Which, by the way, the argument why he couldn't play is because he's got mental health problems.
06:35Yeah, whatever.
06:36You like the damn gamble.
06:38Do I believe that their gamble addiction is – yes, I 100% believe that.
06:42But I don't think he has it.
06:43I don't think he has it.
06:44That's just my –
06:46I don't think he has it.
06:47Yeah, I don't think he has it.
06:47Do I think there are people out there with this thing?
06:49I damn sure do.
06:50Yeah.
06:50And that's why when they have these different things and they put the – you know, if you're having issues
06:54and all those different things, those 800 numbers, I truly 100% believe in it.
06:58I don't believe he got it.
06:59I don't either.
07:00And I don't even know the boy.
07:01I don't believe he got it.
07:03$90,000?
07:05$90,000 bets, Andy.
07:06Bet on – how many times he's bet on Indiana?
07:0940 at least.
07:10Mm-hmm.
07:10Yeah.
07:10Yeah.
07:11Including two negative results.
07:13Get the hell out of here.
07:14Yeah.
07:14No, I mean, it's all –
07:15Get the hell out of here.
07:15It's all nonsense.
07:16Apparently, you could do it now.
07:17You could do whatever you want in college football.
07:18Just go to court if you don't like the outcome.
07:21And that's it.
07:23I mean, again, I will say this, though, because, again, it seems to have galvanized everyone else in college football
07:31against this result.
07:32There's been 50 different things over the last couple of years where it's like, well, is this the tipping point?
07:37Maybe this is it because it actually does feel like everyone is so outraged.
07:41Because –
07:42You don't often see athletic directors from big-time schools putting their names on quotes like the one –
07:48Forbid –
07:48Josh, forbid team from scheduling future matchups with tickets.
07:53It's the one thing you don't do.
07:55You just don't do that.
07:57And that's the crazy thing about it.
07:58It's like, how can – and I don't – and again, I'm not going after the young man.
08:03It's whatever.
08:04He's a kid, does – kids, we do dumb stuff.
08:06Yeah.
08:07We do dumb stuff.
08:08But, but –
08:09He's the same age as Wemby.
08:10But you did this, and you knew that you are not allowed to – you can't tell me you weren't
08:15making them bets and like, I didn't know.
08:17Yeah, you did.
08:18No, but that's because he – of course he knew.
08:20Yes.
08:20That's why he was using his brother-in-law's account to do it because he knew he wasn't allowed to
08:24do it.
08:24Exactly.
08:24And again, I also am with you as far as extending grace and whatnot as far as making mistakes and
08:30blah, blah, blah.
08:31But like, this is an example of a learning opportunity where you made the mistake you can't make.
08:38And you did.
08:38And now you don't get to do the thing anymore.
08:40And you need to take this ass whooping.
08:41Yeah, and that's what happens in life.
08:43Like, yes, kids make mistakes sometimes.
08:44And if they're big enough mistakes, they get in real big trouble for it.
08:48Like, I understand he didn't break any laws, but he broke the golden rule in the sport that he plays
08:52in that you're not allowed to break.
08:53It's 1919, Andy.
08:55Yeah, man.
08:56All right.
08:57Pete Rose died not in the Hall of Fame.
08:59Yes.
08:59Like, since that scandal.
09:02Calvin Ridley's like, man.
09:03What was his name?
09:04I made like eight bets.
09:05What was his name?
09:05Arnold Rothstein?
09:06What?
09:06Arnold Rothstein that fixed that World Series?
09:09Yeah, the Black Sox.
09:09Yeah.
09:10Shoeless Joe Jackson and whatnot.
09:12Like –
09:12I know.
09:13Not anymore.
09:14Not in college football.
09:15It's just bad.
09:16It's just a bad damn look.
09:18It is.
09:18It's a horrible look.
09:19And the fact is that – I understand how Texas Tech can defend him.
09:25It's a damn starting quarterback.
09:26And by the way, no, he's a baller.
09:28Well, that's the thing.
09:29As if he plays great this year, NFL scouts are going to be like, man, he handled adversity great.
09:34The dude can ball.
09:35I'm not one to be like, he ain't even that good.
09:38No, the dude is good.
09:39I do wonder, though.
09:39Like, this is a lot.
09:40He's good.
09:41But this is a lot to deal with.
09:42He's a good damn player.
09:43He is, but I'm just saying, like, this is a lot of – I mean, I could see how this
09:49could screw someone's season up.
09:50You know what I mean?
09:51Like, you come back from something like this and everybody hates you?
09:55Yeah.
09:55He might suck now.
09:56No.
09:57Probably not.
09:57Only if you feel bad about it.
09:59You don't feel bad about it.
09:59That's true.
10:00Yeah.
10:01I don't feel bad.
10:02He probably in the locker room.
10:03I told you I'd get the –
10:05This is great.
10:06I don't even have to play the first two games.
10:07Yeah, I told y'all, man.
10:08And I still get the $5 million.
10:09Hey, man, I told y'all.
